Word From the Pastor
Just a word about Stewardship. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating:

Biblically, good stewardship isn’t about fundraising, but rather a spiritual discipline that becomes a way of life.

When we realize that all that we have is actually a gift from God, it is out of a spirit of gratitude and generosity that we give a portion of our time, talents, and financial resources back to God in order to further a ministry of love and compassion in and through the life of our community of faith.

I have learned that one of the most important elements of good stewardship is to recognize that it’s more about our need to give/share than the church’s need to receive.

Also, there has been a generational shift away from stewardship as a means to preserve and promote an institution within which we experience God, towards stewardship as an act of personal spiritual devotion that secondarily benefits the church and its ministries.

The theology of stewardship also serves as the church’s antidote to our age’s obsession with materialism, consumerism, and the desire to acquire more and more.

As Christians, we know that people are not worth the sum of what they acquire, but are of infinite value because we are all children of God – created in the image of God.

Let us all think upon these things as we prayerfully reflect upon our own way of living, spiritual disciplines, and our need to generously share our blessings with others. Commitment Sunday is November 6.

Blessings,
Rev. Todd

Day Center Notes
Our usual November dinner has been moved to Saturday, December 3, to accommodate another group. Menu stays the same: Subway sandwiches, slaw, pickles, oranges, instant tea/lemonade, homemade cookies, plus 4 gallons of milk for breakfast. If you would like to contribute cookies or milk, please text Caroline Johnson, 918-629-2882.

And speaking of contributors, sending out a BIG Thanksgiving THANK YOU to the ever-faithful usual suspects – Marianne & David Stambaugh, Johnna & Mark Thurston, Gay and Mark Miller, Jim & Jennifer Campbell, Jan Swafford and Brad Burnham – who make our dinners possible!

The Day Center’s Secret Santa outreach is coming soon! We have arranged for 12 recipients this year. The program provides gifts for a recently housed individual or family. Average spending limit is about $75 per adult, less for a child. More details will be available soon. For questions (click name to) contact
Mark Thurston, Outreach & Mission Ministry team Moderator.
One of the meaningful elements of our ministry that has been missing for so long is the causal gathering around a cup of coffee, etc, in the Fellowship Hall before the service of worship.

We are looking for volunteer(s) to help setup and prepare the coffee each Sunday morning before gathering around 10:30 am. There are many options to help make this happen, depending on the availability of one or several volunteers taking turns.

If interested, please contact/text Emily Oldham at 918-237-9592. Thank You!
Equal Exchange
Coffee, Tea and Chocolate Sales

Along with other reunion activities, the Outreach & Mission Ministry team has reopened our Equal Exchange store, (on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month, in Fellowship Hall), offering products such as coffee, tea, chocolate bars, chips and cocoa. These products are not only delicious, they also make great gifts. (and we all know the holidays will be here before we know it.) But most importantly, they provide a double impact on communities!

First, Equal Exchange provides small farmers with a better price for sustainably grown products, and with fewer middlemen, than the big corporate buyers.

Second, the profits (small, but significant) have for several years, been invested in JustHope, a local group founded by Leslie Penrose, which partners with inhabitants of three villages in Central America. The villagers decide what they need and provide labor, while JustHope provides some technical expertise, financial assistance and labor.

Bringing running water to these communities was followed by educational scholarships, a hardware store, a textile project and a model farm to help with adjustment to a dryer climate. One family has produced an impressive line of ceramics, while College Hill has been especially helpful in financing several microbanks for women starting small businesses (at 96% repayment with interest).

These items do cost a bit more than those similarly sold at Walmart, for example-but they make a huge difference in people’s lives!
