Rachel Khanna, Hector Arzeno and Steve Meskers, the new Greenwich House delegation, celebrate their victory.

Democrats flip two seats, retain one, and head to recount for State Senate seat

In a rebuke to the rightward lurch by Greenwich Republicans, voters gave Democratic candidates historic wins on Election Day.

For the first time in Greenwich history Democrats swept all three House seats. In a stunning upset, Rachel Khanna defeated Republican incumbent Kimberly Fiorello, who was running for a second term for the 149th. Fiorello became the only Republican incumbent to lose her seat in the House this election.

Hector Arzeno upset Republican Peter Sherr to become the first Democrat to represent the 151st district. And Steve Meskers easily defeated a challenge by Republican Ed Lopez to win a third term.

The race for State Senate was so close it triggered an automatic recount with Democrat Trevor Crow trailing Republican Ryan Fazio by fewer than 100 votes. By contrast, Fazio won his special election in 2021 by over 450 votes.

Democrats resoundingly won other races including U.S. Senator Dick Blumenthal, U.S. Congressman Jim Himes, Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas, Attorney General William Tong, Treasurer Erick Russell and Comptroller Sean Scanlon.

How did we win?

First, we had great candidates who hammered a positive message about our state, and stood by shared priorities like reproductive freedom, gun safety, and job growth.

Second, we had YOU.

YOU—who phone-banked to get people to the polls.

YOU—who knocked on doors rain or shine.

YOU—who wrote letters to the editor in support of our candidates.

YOU—who emailed or called friends to get them to vote.

YOU—who donated money so we could rent an office.

YOU—who put our lawn signs in your yard.

What's next?

In November 2023, Greenwich will hold municipal elections. Key positions that direct our Town's future will be on the ballot: the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Estimate and Taxation, and the Board of Education.

Election editorial

"No secret to the cause of 'bloodbath' for Greenwich Republicans," John Breunig: "Greenwich Democrats patiently stepped up their game over the years, ultimately delivering the aforementioned governor (Lamont), senator (Blumenthal) and congressman (Himes). They also created a farm system. It was Himes who encouraged Arzeno, a neighbor, to run for office. Everyone benefits from a range of candidates with strong political views. But for now, Greenwich is looking like a one-party town."
