Tēnā koutou katoa

Tai Tokerau Trades Training extends heartfelt Christmas wishes to you all. It has been a particularly challenging 2021 for everyone. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.

Thank you all for your extraordinary effort and mahi over this past year. Our tai tamariki have been fortunate to have you guide and support them through this challenging time. We also thank you for your collaboration, support, and the warm (distanced) embrace you have shown all our team too. We are ever so grateful.

We are now at the cusp of a bright and shining new year, with so much to look forward to. So, onwards and upwards, we say! I am sure we will all be enjoying our very well deserved break and foods such as Christmas ham and pavlova!

Meri Kirihimete to you all from the EEB team!

We have some news regarding our whanau mahi here at Tai Tokerau Trades Training.
Our wonderful Jayme Hawea (Project Administrator) has said goodbye temporarily while she embarks on her journey to parenthood.
We are so proud of Jayme, how she has grown and developed in and with her role at Tai Tokerau Trades Training. We are all so excited to meet her little person very soon!

We are very blessed to have welcomed Alexis Tohu, and Kali Toko (who has recently completed work experience in our office), into our team to fill the big boots of Jayme while she is on maternity leave.

Expect to see these two out and about with us in 2022 at our upcoming Events!
Alexis is 23 yrs of age and comes from the heart of Pipiwai. She is passionate about her clothing label which she has developed. Alexis is taking on this role to develop and expand her personal growth and knowledge but will also continue to develop her clothing label on the side.
Kali is 17 yrs of age and stepped into work experience here at Tai Tokerau Trades Training. We value her so much that she was welcomed as a part-time kaimahi.
Kali comes from Whangaruru and enjoys playing netball, so much so that she couches a primary school team here in Whangarei.

GoHort In-School Presentations 2021
Our EEB team supported GoHort's Northland Career Progression Manager, Maria Fathollahi, and Just Avocados representative John Emmit in fantastic and informative presentations to Whangarei Boys' High School and Kamo High School's Yr 9 & 10 horticulture classes this term.

These presentations covered the industry's diverse career pathways and in-depth understanding of how one can become part of an exciting industry. GoHort discussed how horticulture in New Zealand is leading the way in producing healthy and sustainable food, developing new technology and products to the world, while Just Avocadoes shared insider knowledge on the scope and scale of the industry.

Horticulture is unique to our team as we believe ākonga of Te Tai Tokerau will be leaders in a bright future in this ever-evolving industry. Kaitiakitanga is a central part of GoHort's story. Acknowledging that horticulturists are guardians of the land, and it is a responsibility to ensure the land is looked after for generations to come.

If your school or Kura would like a GoHort Presentation, please contact your dedicated Vocational Coordinator.

Otamatea High School - Year 9 Cohort delivery
EEB have had to be adaptable over Term 4, 2021. With many of our large events postponed, our team has adapted to the changing environment. In doing so, we have prioritized the fantastic resources at our disposal, such as our Pathway Presentation.

This Presentation has been built to deliver the basics and is generally targeted at Years 9 and 10 students. We aim to encourage exploration and self-awareness, which, as we know, are crucial steps in career education for this age group.

This Presentation covers
  • Real-life scenarios, through experiences of the facilitators
  • Successes and learnings of the presenters themselves,
  • The basics of the education system
  • How to navigate the pressures of being asked, "what are you going to do when you leave school."
  • Key questions to ask one's self when thinking about pathway options
  • Tools such as the Vocational Pathways to support exploration

Otamatea High School invited our team to deliver this to their full Year 9 cohort, with phenomenal results shared below.

Cate Conference -
NortCATE Mini Conference, Waitangi
Our team recently attended the NorthCATE Mini-conference, which included the streaming of the CATE conference. This was a fantastic experience, not only for learning but also the opportunity to connect with many of you again, post lockdown.

We had a packed agenda with speakers from all over the world, discussing various essential aspects of our field of work. There was a particular focus on Employability Skills, Employer engagement tools, school-wide career strategy and accountability, the future or careers and our workforces. There were "break out" deliveries provided by a selection of the NorthCATE members, covering critical topics, such as Wellness, Gateway - Handy tips, Tai Tokerau Trade Academy and E2E Te Tai Tokerau upcoming Year 7-9 events in 2022.

Virtual Presentations were delivered by:
  • Leigh Gray (Kaiarahi CATE New Zealand)
  • Tristram Hooley - Careers specialist
  • Minister of Education - Chris Hipkins
  • TEC - Regarding ROVE
  • Shirley Johnson - Youth Employability Aotearoa
  • Jim Bright - Careers specialist
  • MOE - Toolkits
  • Mandy McGirr - Careers specialist
Conference Highlight: Gateway Presentation - "Handy Tips"
- Eileen Crawford
Our team were really excited by the information provided by Eileen Crawford. Eileen has substantial experience in working with Gateway within her school. Eileen shared the resources she uses throughout the process with the other NorthCATE members. She has kindly offered to share these resources with Members and Non-members of CATE (see below).

Thank you Eileen, for this amazing act of collaboration and support of your pairs.

If you require support with Gateway and would like informal, peer to peer advice, or to discuss ideas/struggles/learnings; please join the NorthCATE Gateway Help Facebook page. This is a "safe" place for open discussion relating to all things Gateway.

Our team would like to express encouragement for new Gateway, Transitions and Careers staff to connect with NorthCATE. Our experience has been one of a warm welcome, and genuine support and collaboration.

Conference Highlight: Tai Tokerau Trades Academy
- Denise Jelicich
Te Taitokerau Trades Academy operates a model of Vocational Education encompassing all of Northland which is inclusive of all schools and their communities and is not based on a one size fits all approach.
Our purpose is :
●      to improve retention by motivating more students to stay engaged in learning and training by providing meaningful options for study.
●      to increase achievement in NCEA level 2/3
●      to provide clear post-school pathways by giving students a head start on training for vocational qualifications and smooth access to further training, apprenticeships and employment.

Who is in Te Taitokerau Trades Academy?
At the beginning of 2022 we will have 658 students from 14 schools in STP programmes under the umbrella of Te Taitokerau Trades Academy:
●      Kaitaia College
●      Northland College
●      Dargaville High School
●      Tikipunga High School
●      Whangarei Boys’ High School
●      Otamatea High School
●      Kamo High School
●      Whangarei Girls’ High School
●      Taipa Area School
●      Whangaroa College
●      Tauraroa Area School
●      Mahurangi College
●      Bay of Islands College
●      Bream Bay College

These schools run programmes alongside tertiary partners to give our learners access to the types of courses that interest them, better suit their learning styles and assist them into apprenticeships, full-time employment and/or further training.

Our external Trades Academies (not school-run) for 2022 include:
●      NorthTec (Cookery, Food & Beverage, Automotive, Construction, Hair & Beauty, Health) - Whangarei. Automotive - Kaikohe
●      Papa Taiao (Primary, Aquaculture and Sustainability) - Far North, Hokianga, Bay of Islands
●      NZ Sports Turf (Horticulture -fruit production) Kerikeri
●      Queenstown Resort College (Hospitality) Paihia & Kaitaia
●      Axiom Training (Heavy machinery & Infrastructure) Whangarei
●      Te Wananga o Aotearoa (Whakairo) Whangarei

How do schools /PTEs apply to be a Trades Academy?
Apply in June for internally run programmes to be considered for the following year.
If a school/kura is too small to sustain an internal Trades Academy you can always enroll your learners in a 1 or 2 day per week programme run by a TTTA provider.

What are the advantages?
The advantage to running a STP programme, apart from the obvious benefits to learners, is the  'tertiary top up funding allowance' which is paid to cover the cost of tertiary provided credits/moderation/extra tools of the trade/safety gear.
There is also transport and co-ordination funding available to every school that enrolls students in Trades Academy.
Industry Highlights
Hayden, during the delivery of the "Employability Programme" at his school, Dargaville High School
Employability Programme - Gateway Experience - Apprenticeship

  • Effective collaboration between school, EEB and ITO leads to a Marine Apprenticeship for local student.
Our team are proud to play the part we do, with our Tai Tamariki.

We recently received feedback from out ITO (now PTE) friends at Mast Academy, previously Marine and Composites ITO, regarding a student who we have supported over 2021.

Hayden started his journey with our team as a participant in the delivery of our Employability Programme. This programme is a series of workshops covering the core Employability skills required to successfully navigate in the working world. Such as communication, team work, positive attitude, time management amoung others.

During this programme, Hayden was incredibly engaged and proactive in his participation. Our team worked alongside his Gateway Coordinator to find options for him in his chosen pathway, Marine. Our team connected with Mast Academy, who specialise in Marine industry pathways, and were met with incredible efficiency and willingness to support akonga.

MAST Academy found Hayden a wonderful Gateway experience, which he has participated in for most of his Year 13 year.

We are so pleased to hear that Hayden has been offered the apprenticeship he has worked so hard for!

Well done Hayden, Mast Academy, and his employers, Marine North.
