Dear companions for the journey,
It is hard to believe that only a week ago the fires began. Somehow—by the grace of God, perhaps—we have made it through the week, even if our homes did not. As I promised at the Sunday forum, throughout this week I will send regular updates so that you can know what our plans are here on campus. But before I look ahead, let me just say a few words about the past few days.
First, personally, to be together this past Sunday with so many of you was like balm on a wound. It was so good to see your faces, such a gift to hear the sacred words and music, and profoundly renewing to gather around God’s table. I hope even for you who attended virtually you felt much the same. You certainly were present in our prayers.
Second, you all rock! The staff and volunteers continue to work tirelessly, graciously, and faithfully. There are too many to thank by name, but I am grateful to each and every individual who has been a part of our efforts.
Now, remembering that I said Sunday we would evaluate daily decisions made and services offered, here’s where we are as of Tuesday afternoon.
1. Sweetland Hall continues to serve as a distribution center. And we are imagining remaining open for this purpose through the end of operations Saturday. (Remember, we are open 9:00-5:00 each day.)
2. We are no longer actively soliciting material donations (but will receive select items such as waters and toiletries should they come in). We continue to receive monetary donations, and to donate simply click here (I should tell you that people near and far have been so generous in their donations, including St. Paul’s Church, Chattanooga, where Ed Bacon is serving as interim and St. Luke’s/San Lucas, Vancouver, where Alfredo Feregrino is now serving as Priest-in-Charge.)
3. Pastoral care remains a top priority.
A. These past few days numerous volunteers have made a first wave of check-in phone calls, focusing on Altadena residents and those whom we know have lost their homes. At this point that number seems to be 56. We will be expanding the circle of check-ins in the coming days.
B. We are busy planning for three options regarding emotional support. First, Claudia Shields and Elizabeth Eilers each will be leading 6 week group sessions. Stay tuned for specifics in the coming days. We also are working on offering group support sessions with the particular audiences of parents and youth in mind. More to come there. Second, beyond these extended offerings, we are organizing a handful of one-off workshops and seminars, each with a particular focus. Stay tuned for announcements about these workshops. Third, we are compiling a relatively small and somewhat vetted list of licensed therapists for those seeking individual counseling. We will make that list available soon. Finally, understanding that navigating the countless recovery demands are exhausting, we are training “process companions” to walk alongside those who might benefit from such support. They should be ready for deployment within a week.
4. What about our “regularly scheduled programming?” Although there’s little that is normal about these days, in some ways, to maintain some of our regularly scheduled programs seems crucial to our well-being. With that in mind, we will hold our Wednesday 12:10 Eucharist and 6:00 PM Taize (both in the Chapel), all choir rehearsals will resume this week, CYF will meet Wednesday, and blessed Pat’s Coulter’s memorial service will occur Friday at 5:00pm as scheduled. If you have any questions regarding other programs, call the front office and we will do our best to provided you the latest intelligence.
So that’s enough for now. The staff and core volunteers will continue to meet, assess, plan, and organize on a daily basis. I will write with another update on Thursday.
I have been reminded of a story told by Fred Rogers years ago, as he spoke of his mother’s comfort during scary times. She would say to him, “Look for the helpers; you will always find people who are helping.” I have never experienced the truth of that suggestion more than this past week.
Thank you for all you have done. May God bless you and sustain us in the days to come.
Peace,
