The Future of Work is Diverse, Inclusive, Just and Equitable

GlobalMindED closes the equity gap by creating a capable, diverse talent pipeline through connections to role models, mentors, internships for low-income students, returning adults, First Gen to college and inclusive leaders who teach them, work with them and hire them.
Felicidades Jesus Rios Vera!
Colorado Association for Bilingual Education's Secondary English as a Second Language Teacher of the Year

Today we share the story of an incredible Colorado teacher, Jesus Rios Vera. He has been recognized by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education (CO-CABE) as the winner of the Secondary English as a Second Language Teacher of the Year Award.

Jesus Rios Vera works at Basalt High School in the Roaring Fork School District. He serves as an English Language Development (ELD) teacher, working primarily with ELD level 1 and 3 students. He welcomes all newcomer students - those who are new to the U.S. educational system - in his ELD 1 class. This is his third year at Basalt High School, and the impact he has made on students over the past few years is vast.

Upon walking into his classroom, you will immediately understand why so many students love his teaching. Jesus is full of passion and has high expectations for all his students. He creates a high energy learning environment that invites all students to participate. You cannot help but feel safe, challenged, and confident when listening to his teaching. Jesus' own experience growing up in Mexico helps him relate with his students who are coming from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. He knows how to create relevant content and celebrates the vast mix of cultures present in his classroom. The sacrifices Jesus makes for his students daily goes without recognition - driving over 3 hours everyday commuting to work. Yet he is present and positive daily, meeting his students where they are at and supporting them as they transition into a new culture and school.

Although the Roaring Fork School District is settled in a small community in the Colorado mountains, it is a district with a large Latino/a community. Basalt High School has around 400 students, over 80 of which are in the process of learning English. Each school year, over 30 new students arrive from various Spanish-speaking countries, all of whom Jesus teaches and supports with their acquisition of English.

All Emerging Bilingual students take an exam called the ACCESS test. This exam determines the English level of a student, analyzing how much their language proficiency grows each year. Jesus and his incredible cohort of ELD teachers have created a culture at Basalt High School in which students who speak Spanish thrive and succeed. The results show just how impactful their teaching practices are. In Colorado, the Median SGP ACCESS results accounting for COVID was 51%. Basalt High School's results far surpassed the Colorado average, coming in at a Median SGP score of 81%. Achieving scores like these is no easy task, and illustrates just how effective the Basalt High School ELD team is.

We are honored to celebrate Jesus on his achievements, and grateful for all the ELD teachers supporting diverse students around the U.S. Thank you for making all students feel welcome and safe in your classrooms!

All are welcome to attend the CO-CABE 2022 Colorado Bilingual Educator & Advocate Awards Gala on October 13th at 6:00pm in the Bella Sera Event Center. Celebrate the hard work and amazing achievements of the best bilingual educators and advocates around. There will be dinner, dancing, and more! All proceeds from this event support student scholarships and teacher mini-grants. For more information and to buy tickets click here.
