Abby in the middle of one of two spins to execute a 720

The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

Many of you know the subject of today’s Good Stuff: Abby Dunn. Abby was born and raised in Susanville and currently lives in Arizona where she attends the University of Arizona on a full ride basketball scholarship.

Abby started doing water sports in the summer of 2017, 8 months post injury. She was introduced to it by Ability First Sports out of Chico and has been at it ever since.

At the end of the 2021 season, Abby stared trick skiing. In true Abby-fashion, she quickly became competitive and a couple of weeks ago, she entered her first water skiing competition ever, the Adaptive Nationals.

Abby set a new record in the competition with nine hundred points, which earned her the gold and a position on Team USA for the 2023 Worlds that will be held in Elk Grove. Abby says her hardest tricks thus far are “720s, maybe”, which is two spins done consecutively.

She also says that her dad, Bill, “has always been my biggest support and pushed me to do my best. He helps me in any way he can even if he’s still learning the sport.”

Since her injury in seventh grade, Abby has not let anything get in her way. During her high school years, she always had a sunny smile and “hello” for me in the hallways. She excelled in track and field and was asked to continue competing in those events at the college level. However, basketball and studying take precedence during the school year.

Abby is a sophomore at the U of A where she is majoring in public health. Wish her and the rest of the Wildcats a good season and look out for her to smash some more records at the World Games in 2023.

Thank you to Jim Daniels who contacted me with this story about Abby. Both he and Abby contributed information and answered questions while I was writing, because like Abby’s dad, I’m still learning the sport.

Abby also received the Royce Andes award for a “promising new national skier”

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Play a Round for a Great Cause: Holiday with

a Hero Golf Tournament Set for October 8th

Hurry and get registered! As of press time there were spots left for only two teams!

Want to spend a fun day on the golf course while helping to support a really wonderful organization? The Lassen County Holiday with a Hero program will be hosting a fundraising golf tournament at the Diamond Mountain Golf Course October 8th.

Registration for the 18-hole, four-person scramble, is $400 for each team. Lunch, donated by Joe Camino and Susanville Grocery Outlet, is included in the tournament entry fee.

There will be an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest, with prizes for the team with the best sweaters, great raffle prizes and the bar will be provided by Susanville Sunrise Rotarians.

No longer focused solely on the Christmas shopping event, money raised at this tournament will all go to support the year-round activities of the Holiday with a Hero program.

“Holiday with a Hero has grown from its start of giving thirty kids a year an enjoyable Christmas experience to now, annually bringing Christmas joy to anywhere from 150 to 175 children,” explains Terra Avilla, one of the annual event’s organizers.

“However, as our team looked at our mission statement, which is to bridge the gap between our county’s youth and its first responders and to help foster better relationships and trust within the littlest and most vulnerable members of our communities, it became apparent, that the first responders love this program just as much if not more than the children.”

As the program grew, Avilla said that they realized the huge need in our community for this type of relationship building, and the group is now expanding to year-round events and activities.

“Holiday with a Hero has begun sister programs that treat our young athletes to a fun day of shopping, making sure every child has the sports equipment they need to be safe, and effective at their sport.”

“We had a great showing at the fishing derby and are now partnering with Salvation Army to help send kiddos back to school with all the supplies and clothing they need. We realize that having contact with our county’s youth year-round, makes us more effective at accomplishing our goal.”

“We also recognize the immense need for financial help that so many of our local families have. With the implementation of more activities and attempting to provide more services for our county’s children, we need more financial assistance. As a non-profit, we cannot function without the generosity of our community. We are hosting a golf tournament, in what we hope will be a yearly fun tradition for the golfing community. We will have great food, and raffles, and of course the ugly sweater contest, which we know will be a success.”

Spaces are limited. Register today by following this link or stop by the Diamond Mountain Golf Course.

Avilla adds, if you would like to assist Holiday with a Hero in its mission but golfing just isn’t your forte, tax-deductible donations of raffle items are also greatly appreciated.

LHS Varsity Football Holds Practice with Susanville’s Youngest Grizzlies

Photos by Lester Ruda and Anna Townsend

In an effort to unify football programs happening simultaneously within the community, Lassen Youth Football League’s 5 to 7 year-old players, under Head Coach Justin Weekley, were welcomed onto Arnold Field for Lassen High’s Varsity practice on September 13th.

Our community’s oldest Grizzlies are the fourteen seniors playing for Coach McCloskey on LHS varsity, while the thirteen youngest Grizzlies play in the LYFL Bandit division.

Seniors Ben Wheeler and Conner Avila also have brothers Jeremiah Townsend and Austin Avila that play at the Bandit level.

During practice, Varsity players buddied up with a young player to get to know them a bit better and to share some advice about how to be a good teammate.

LHS Coach McCloskey offered the young Grizzlies an exciting pep talk, shouting out calls and getting team responses from both groups.

He engaged both teams by asking how many of his players started out just like these little guys, in youth football. All around there was encouragement for players to keep their love of the game strong and one day they will be big strong Grizzlies just like his Varsity players.

DDT Spray Tried in Lassen Dairy

September 27, 1945

Last week the extension service sprayed two dairy market milk plants with DDT to kill flies. The knowledge of practical use of DDT insecticides in agriculture, and round the home, is still far from complete.

Results from the spraying in Lassen county of the Dairy building looks very promising. On the second day after the spraying, there were no flies in any part of the building, which included the milk barn, bottling room, heating plants and storage rooms.

Later on in the month other dairymen in Lassen county will have an opportunity to visit theses dairies to see the results for themselves.
