I-Connect to Feature "Try Harder!" & Panel Discussion
Join us on Wednesday, January 22, from 8:15-10:15 a.m. at the Bellevue High School (BHS) Performing Arts Center for a screening of the documentary "Try Harder!" followed by an insightful panel discussion about college application mania. All BHS parents and caregivers are welcome.
Guest Speakers:
- Lisa Hansen, BHS College and Career Advisor
- Mary Beth Smith, BHS School Counselor (Des-Ki)
- Sarah Manesh Berger, BHS School Counselor (N-Sta)
Missed the original showing of “Try Harder!” last February? It drew the largest I-Connect audience of the year! Now's your chance to see the abridged 60-minute version. This event is perfect for parents of students who will apply to college, or who have recently navigated the process.
| |
Synopsis of “Try Harder!”:
At Lowell High School, the top public high school in San Francisco, the seniors are stressed out. As they prepare for the emotionally draining college application process, students are keenly aware of the intense competition for the few open spots in their dream colleges. At Lowell — where cool kids are nerds, nearly everyone has an amazing talent, and most of the student body is Asian American — the things that usually make a person stand out can feel commonplace. With humor and heart, director Debbie Lum captures the reality of the American college application process, and the intersection of class, race, and educational opportunity, as young adults navigate an ever-demanding rite of passage.
| |
Variety called "Try Harder!" "endearing and alarming." The New York Times said it has "all the energy of a high-stakes poker game and a reality competition show combined."

Wolverine Guard (WG) is a Bellevue High PTSA sponsored award that recognizes students who perform 100+ hours of community service in the 12-month period from May 1st to April 30th of each school year. Each student who reports 100 or more approved hours will earn the Wolverine Guard Community Service Award. Last year 116 Bellevue High students earned Wolverine Guard, with Wolverine Guard recipients completing over 14,000 combined hours of service in our community.
- ALL BHS students from 9-12 grades are eligible for WG should they meet the requirements.
- Students who earn WG in a given school year will receive a certificate to recognize their community service. Students who earn WG in at least two of their four years at BHS will qualify for a WG Blue/Gold Honor Cord at graduation; students with 4 years of service at BHS will also be awarded the WG Distinction Community Service Award.
- Application must include volunteer time logs. Log forms should be detailed and with signed (non-digital) signatures from volunteer coordinators.
- Volunteering is done through a non-profit organization (usually a 501c3 organization).
- The PTSA WG program is separate from the Bellevue School District volunteer hours requirement for graduation. We DO NOT coordinate with Naviance and will only accept Wolverine Guard time logs.
Applications are due midnight on April 30th, 2025. No late applications will be accepted!
Review guidelines and WG application and time logs at PTSA Wolverine Guard page: https://www.bellevuehighptsa.com/wp/wolverine-guard/.
Any questions, please reach out to Michelle Pflaum and Sherry Fang at wolverineguard@bellevuehighptsa.com.

Hi Bellevue,
Here's the weekly Library Newsletter. As always, if you have any questions, want to find a book, have suggestions, or just want to talk about what you're reading, come see me in the library or send me an email or Teams Chat!
First Sentence Friday: "Carrie Lee Fitzgerald was sick with worry when she boarded the Trailways bus in Lynchburg headed to her home on the rural outskirts of Danville, Virginia, in January 1944." — from The Movement: The African American Struggle for Civil Rights, by Thomas C. Holt.
Are you looking for ways to have a Day On (instead of a Day Off) in observation of Dr. King's birthday on Monday, January 20th ? Here are some ideas (click the links for more info):
Heads up that the library will be CLOSED for testing next Friday morning, January 24th from 7:30-11:30am, and will reopen in time for lunches and for the rest of the day.
Free author event at Island Books in Mercer Island -- local YA author Danielle Parker will be at Island Books on Saturday, January 25th at 4pm in conversation with three other YA authors — Elise Bryant, Myah Hollis, and Jade Adia — to celebrate the release of Parker's new book LOVE ON PAPER, a fun mystery-rom-com set at a writing retreat in Northern California. The authors will chat about their experiences in the publishing industry, where they find inspiration, and why the romance genre appeals to them. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
King County Library System is starting a new Girls Who Code Club on Saturdays starting February 1st. Open to high school aged female identifying students, this club will be led by a volunteer Computer Science student from Bellevue College. A few spots remain — register HERE.
At our MLK Assembly on Tuesday, guest speaker Charles Douglass from Common Power mentioned SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, as another example of an organization created by young people to bring about actionable change during the Civil Rights Movement. One of the founders of that group, the late Rep. John Lewis, co-wrote a graphic memoir series about his beginnings as a student activist and organizer leading up to the Voting Rights Act called March (3 books), followed by Run, a continuation of Lewis's life story. We have all of these books in the BHS Library and Run is the New York Public Library's current Teen Banned Book Club pick. Download a free discussion guide HERE, where you can also register for a live event (that will be recorded) with Lewis's co-author Andrew Aydin and illustrator Nate Powell on February 20th.
Junior Library Guild is holding a Bookmark Design Contest leading up to April's National Library Week and winners will receive credit towards new books for their school library! Information, rules, and a (required) template are HERE. Each bookmark must be inspired by a book sourced from JLG, so HERE is a collection on Destiny Discover of books in our library that we got from JLG and HERE are some of the books coming up in the next couple subscription boxes — browse through and see if anything inspires you to create a bookmark! Deadline for submissions is March 6, and entries must be submitted by an adult (that's me!) so email me your completed works no later than Wednesday, March 5.
