Welcome Back and Happy Spring!
March saw the Mothers’ Club, led by Jennifer Kendall, our Enrichment VP, approve more requests for classroom enrichment. Grants this year have supported funding for microscopes for the biology classrooms, Physics field trips, a trip to the DIA for the AP European History students, supplies for the Science Olympiad team, clinicians for the band and orchestra, yoga instructors for our physical education students, funds for the Foods class for our students with ASD and cognitive impairments, and funds to defray the costs for the South Wind Ensemble to attend the prestigious Michigan Music Conference. All thanks to the fundraising efforts of our many volunteers and your generosity.
Thanks to your continued support through memberships and fundraising activities, the Mothers’ Club will also be awarding need- and merit-based scholarships to some of South’s outstanding graduating seniors at Mothers’ Club Scholarship Night on May 5th. We are delighted to have the ability to invest in our students’ futures this way.
Preparations for this year’s Spring fundraiser, “South Runs for the Roses” are underway, and it is shaping up to be a fun event filled with entertainment, food and camaraderie. The event will take place Saturday, May 7 at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available. Tickets and all sponsorship information will be available on the Mothers’ Club website at www.mothersclubgps.com. Please contact our chairs Erika Page or Jacqueline Knuth for more information. They, and their group of dedicated volunteers, are working hard to make this fundraiser a success. Please plan on joining us for a wonderful evening in support of our students and South.
Along with my All Night Party co-chair, Jennifer Hurst and our amazing committee, preparations for this year’s Senior All Night Party are in full swing. Information regarding volunteer and donation opportunities is on South’s website under Senior Graduation Information. Please review the materials to see how you can help.

BABY PICTURES NEEDED:
Please take the time to email a baby/toddler picture of your son/daughter to our slideshow chair, Melissa Smith. Deadline for baby picture submission is May 1st.
- Email the picture, preferably in .jpg format, to gps22seniorslideshow@gmail.com
- Name your picture with your child's first and last name (ie.MichaelWholihan.jpg)
- In the body of the email, please indicate how your child should be listed in the slideshow. For example, if your child's name is Elizabeth, but she prefers to be called Liz, please indicate that preference.
- You will receive an email confirmation that your picture was received.
- If you don't have a picture in digital format, please take a picture of their picture with your phone. NO hard copy pictures please.

The Class of 2024 is hosting an Ashby's Fundraiser on Friday, April 22nd.

Physical Forms and Gold Cards need to be approved in the Athletic office before Tryouts.
Both forms are in the Athletic office, Room 104 from 7:45-4pm.
Physicals need to be dated April 15, 2021 to be valid for the Spring Season.

Welcome to the fourth quarter homestretch! Quarter 3 ends April 8, and then we just have nine weeks left of school (less for Seniors!)
SENIORS:
It’s not too late to search for Scholarships and Financial Aid. Be sure to check weekly e*blasts and Naviance for an ever-updating list of scholarships. Have you completed your FAFSA, as well? Michigan has extended its FAFSA Priority deadline to May 1st. Even if you don’t think you will get any grant (free) money, you may get school scholarships and low/no-interest loan offers that you may accept or decline in whole or in part. Questions about FAFSA are conveniently answered by the chatbot 24/7. Also, completing the FAFSA is a great idea to show interest in receiving money from colleges – sometimes, this opens doors that were previously hidden. For general scholarship searching, I am a big fan of www.fastweb.com and http://www.finaid.org/ These are both packed with GREAT information and resources. On the Counseling Center Website, I have links to a presentation I did last spring on “Understanding Different Sources of Financial Aid” as well as a direct link to the slide deck for this.
There are still many excellent opportunities to apply to schools. It is not too late. On May 5, NACAC will post a comprehensive list of all colleges and universities with admissions openings. You will be able to see this list here.
JUNIORS:
Counselors will visit PoL classrooms on April 20 for our next installment of College 101: Financing your Education. That same evening we will be hosting a Virtual Financial Aid Night REGISTER HERE, but if you would like to watch a pre-recorded version of this presentation, see this website for the “Financing Education Beyond High School” presentation. Topics include the elements of financial aid, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), private resources available, and more!
Current Juniors who are planning to apply to colleges in the Fall of 2022 should make sure that they are doing the following:
Many schools are already choosing to be test-optional next year. However, I think it would be wise to take the ACT and/or SAT tests. You can do this online at www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.org ALL juniors will be taking the SAT at South on April 13. Your student will register for the test in school. You do not need to do anything to sign him or her up online. My advice at this point is to consider NOT sending student test scores so that you can be strategic about your decision to share this information of hold back.
If it is possible, try to visit college campuses.
While the days get longer and sunnier, we need to increase our awareness of this peak season for suicidal thoughts. If you are noticing changes in your child’s grades, interactions, behaviors, or friends, this may be a message to seek support. Please connect with your child’s counselor or another member of the school’s mental health team to find resources. If you are in immediate need of assistance with concerns about suicide, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org for a live chat.
