The Workplace Podcast: HR Tips for Work Holiday Parties
In this episode of The Workplace podcast, CalChamber employment law experts Matthew Roberts and Bianca Saad discuss the workplace rules employers should consider when planning their company’s holiday party.

It has been another challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and since many employers in California couldn’t host a party last year, many employers are looking forward to celebrating this holiday season by throwing an in-person company holiday party. As with anything that is work related, employers need to make sure they put together a respectful and safe event in addition to the fun, Roberts says.

Mask Mandate Returns While CAL/OSHA
Considers New Regulations
The Governor announced the return of an indoor mask mandate in response to rising COVID-19 infections statewide. Later this week, Cal/OSHA will consider increases in testing, social distancing, and costs associated for employers in their update to the state’s COVID-19 workplace regulations.

The business community is concerned with some of the potential new provisions, including requirements that vaccinated employees with no symptoms be tested and stay out of the workplace after close contact with an infected individual. View the changes proposed or virtually attend the meeting on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m.
Why Does California Have the Highest
Jobless Rate in the Country?
California has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Several factors are contributing, including the state’s slow-to-rebound leisure and hospitality sectors. But the state has a lot of job openings, and high quit rates suggest workers are optimistic they can find better positions.
Democrats Want to Spend California’s Surplus on Infrastructure. What About Rebate Checks?
State lawmakers want to use a projected $31 billion surplus to fuel an infrastructure boom, a tactic that could reduce the amount Californians might see in any rebate checks this year – if they happen at all.

The state expects to have so much money it risks exceeding a state spending threshold called the Gann Limit. If it does, it must send more money to schools and some money back to taxpayers through rebates.

Top Democratic lawmakers who control the budget process in Sacramento said they intend to reduce the amount they exceed the limit in part by spending a big chunk of the projected surplus on infrastructure.
