Gail Cope, Artist and Art Historian
"Not All Who Wander Are Lost"

Gail W. Cope was born in Memphis, Tennessee and is currently a resident of Farmer's Branch. She worked in Language Arts, primarily German, for several years, but in 2001 began to pursue the Fine Arts, first at Brookhaven and then completing both an MA and an MFA at Texas Woman's University in 2013.
On Thursday, October 6th, Cope will give a presentation that talks about how a lifetime of travel and study have influenced her art. In addition, she will discuss the techniques developed on her way to becoming dotty, or as she likes to call it- A Neopointilist.

From Gail's website: "This piece was made to go with a poem by the same name. The poem is by Richard Weatherly and concerns a comet which reappears throughout time. The different reactions on earth as it passes, range from petroglyphs to alchemical symbols to photographs."

125-Mile Visual Arts Exhibition

The 125-Mile Exhibition was initiated in 2006 to establish a regional high quality juried art exhibition for artists living within a 125-mile radius of Denton, TX, to compete and show their work.
Fee: $20 student, $30 member, $35 non-member (for up to three images. Only one work per person may be selected for exhibit.
Eligible Media:
2D and 3D work including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, fiber, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewelry, metalworking, and wood. No installations.
Artwork Requirements:
All artwork must be original, not a copy of a painting or another image. No mechanical reproductions of original work. Only work completed in the last 36 months will be accepted.
Juror: Linda Ridgeway
Linda Ridgway (born 1947 in Jeffersonville, Indiana) creates poetic bronze wall reliefs that convey both autobiographical and cultural imagery. Although educated as a printmaker, Ridgway continues to experiment with the limits of various media to create work that remains intimate regardless of scale. Ridgway's bronzes emerge from a two-dimensional template to become new spatial objects that elucidate the artist's personal experiences.
Linda Ridgway received an M.F.A. from Tulane University, and a B.F.A. from the Louisville School of Art. She has participated in various solo and group exhibitions including Linda Ridgway: A Survey, Poetics of Form at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas and the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas in 1997-98; and One Hundred Years: The Permanent Collection of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas in 2002.

Best of Show $1000, Total Cash and Merchandise Awards $3550.

Figure Drawing Group Meets on the Fourth Thursday
|
On Thursday, October 27, VAST will sponsor its monthly drawing session with a live model. This two hour open studio at the Arts Center will have no instructor. The group is available to VAST members only.
Each meeting will have both short and long poses. The model will be clothed. Participants will share the cost of the model. All participants will be responsible for putting the room back in order.
Meeting day: fourth Thursday of the month (except November and December). There will be no meetings in June, July, and August.
Time: 10 AM to 12 Noon
2016 Dates: 9/22, 10/27, (No meetings in Nov. or Dec.)
2017 Dates: 1/26, 2/23, 3/23, 4/27, 5/25
Location: The craft room at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street.

Jo Williams, VAST Artist of the Year
exhibition to be displayed through October.
Jo Williams currently has an exhibition of 30 watercolor and mixed media paintings at The Chestnut Tree until November. The paintings include a variety of subjects, but they are all based on inspiration from nature and natural forms. The approximately 30 paintings represent a period of about ten years work.

Over the years I have worked in a variety of media; acrylic, handmade paper, wood assemblage, and encaustic wax painting. Collage is often an important part of my work in any media, since I collect things. My studio is filled with stacks of handmade papers, fabrics, geographic maps, postage stamps, and other miscellaneous items. I often embed these items from our lives into my works in an effort to create connections with the viewer by using symbols of our sense of place, our communications, memories and associations. Then there is that constant desire to create COLOR and TEXTURE that compel one to pause and look."

"Outside the Box"
exhibition at PointBank Black Box Theater
Millie Giles' Critique Group is currently showing until October 14. The exhibition is free.
Exhibiting artists are Andrea Albright, Nel dorn Byrd, Mindy Faubion, Ellen Frenkel, Jackie Haugen, Lorraine Hayes, Tonya Littmann, Shubhangi Mantri and Jo Williams. The art represents a variety of media including fiber and painting.
The Critique Group meets monthly, September through May, at the City of Denton Central Fire Station. The group has 12 VAST members and welcomes any members of VAST to its substitute list.
The critic is Millie Giles, retired professor of art, who taught at the University of North Texas from 1976-2013. She spent the last 7 years there as Coordinator of the Watercolor Concentration program.
The PointBank Black Box Theater Exhibition is co-sponsored by Denton Community Theater and VAST, and is located at 318 E. Hickory. For information on DCT, call 940.382.1915.

 David Adams will be exhibiting at the Senior Center, October through December.
"I am a graduate of American River College, Sacramento CA, with an Associate of Arts Degree in Fine Art. I studied under the artist/teacher Gary Pruner. I am presently retired from the United States Postal Service after 35 yrs service, with over 16 years as the Sacramento District Graphics Illustrator. My wife and I love to travel and I have taken many photos in which I use to paint the majority of my work from."

Old Town Art Stroll / Meet the Artist Event 4/29/2017 6:00 PM
Old Town Coppell is known for its nationally recognized Farmer's Market, great dining, public gathering space, restaurants, playground, interactive fountain and community craft and art festivals. Old Town is in close proximity to DFW airport and surrounded by nationally recognized distribution facilities such as Amazon and the Container Store. The location promises great exposure for the artist and CAC will market the exhibit throughout the DFW metro-plex. The Coppell Arts Council will host an evening Art Stroll event, in which art will be paired with local music, food, wine and craft beer. Artists are encouraged to attend.
CAC will consider the purchase of one art piece from the exhibit to be donated to the City. Artwork will be available for sale during the exhibition with a 30% commission being distributed to CAC.
Budget
An honorarium of $1,500 will be paid to each of the selected artists.
An additional $500 will be awarded to the People's Choice Award

Location: The Upstairs Gallery in Arlington
Learn a different approach to drawing and painting. After applying the
charcoal to canvas or paper, you can then draw with water or pencils
or brushes to create an exciting and unusual effect. Bring your own
drawings to incorporate into your paintings. The charcoal will be
provided.

VAST Artist Day Out is a day where members may come paint at the Arts Center from 9:00am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month. There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering.
You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends. Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!
