Business Roundtable on Recovery to Work

April 19, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Please join the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and the Jefferson County Port Authority to discuss labor shortages in your company by hiring people who are in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). Individuals who are in recovery are a largely untapped economic resource, with as many as 5.5 million U.S. adults living with SUD currently unemployed.

As part of a national project funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission, a group of partners led by the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association is working together in a 10-county region of Eastern Ohio to strengthen the recovery to work ecosystem and connect people in recovery to jobs.

The business roundtable will be held virtually and include:

  • Success stories from employers and employees;
  • A business-focused discussion of barriers and opportunities;
  • An overview of the recovery support services in the region most relevant to businesses.

This event is for business participants whose companies are interested in learning more about hiring people in recovery or already have a focused effort to hire people in recovery. The roundtable is hosted and sponsored by OMEGA.

Why 95% of Your Website Visitors Don't Buy, and What You Can Do About It

by Dan Croxen

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is a complex field and one that is rapidly evolving. It's about understanding people and their behavior, not simply website visits. Dan Croxen provides an all-encompassing guide to CRO, explaining the how and why, before focusing on techniques and tools to increase the percentage of visitors who buy from the site, and subsequently the amount that these visitors spend when they buy.

Grounded in best-practice theory and research, it brings together usability, analytics, and persuasion to offer a detailed, step-by-step guide to improve conversion rates, increase ROI from online marketing campaigns, generate higher levels of repeat business, and increase the e-commerce value of websites.

Works Progress Administration established by Congress as part of FDR’s “New Deal”

From History: On April 8, 1935, Congress votes to approve the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a central part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.

In November 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, Governor Roosevelt of New York was elected the 32nd president of the United States. In his inaugural address on March 4, 1933, Roosevelt promised Americans that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” and outlined his New Deal—an expansion of the federal government as an instrument of employment opportunity and welfare.

In April 1935, the WPA was established under the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act, as a means of creating government jobs for some of the nation’s many unemployed. Under the direction of Harry L. Hopkins, the WPA employed more than 8.5 million persons on 1.4 million public projects before it was disbanded in 1943. The program chose work that would not interfere with private enterprise, especially vast public building projects like the construction of highways, bridges and dams.

Did You Know?

  • The World's Largest Passover Seder Takes Place in Nepal... Each year members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement hold their "Seder on Top of the World" in Kathmandu for Jewish locals and travelers alike.
  • Abraham Lincoln Was Assassinated During Passover. According to the American Jewish Historical Society, many Jews were in synagogue for the holiday when news of Lincoln's assassination broke.
  • Coca-Cola Makes a Special Batch of Kosher Coke for Passover. While Coke is generally a kosher product, the dietary laws tighten during the Passover holiday making high-fructose corn syrup a no-no for observant Jews...
  • The First American Edition of the Haggadah Was Published in 1837. The Haggadah is the book or text Jews read from during Passover.
  • Manischewitz is a Brand, Not the Hebrew Word for Kosher Wine. Just as a Kleenex is really a "facial tissue," and Q-Tips are actually "cotton swabs," Manischewitz is a proprietary eponym.

Ohio Chamber of Commerce concerned about ‘don’t say gay’ and racism education bill

From Cleveland.com: Ohio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Steve Stivers said Wednesday that the organization has concerns about a new bill in the Ohio House that blends parts of Florida’s so-called “don’t-say-gay” law with an Ohio measure that attempts to control how teachers can talk to students about racism in history and current.

“The Chamber is concerned that some of the language in this bill may impede Ohio’s ability to lure the best and brightest minds to fill these openings and put down roots in the Buckeye State; however, we trust that through the legislative process everyone will get a chance to have their voice heard,” he said in a statement released two days after the bill was intoduced in the house.

Greater US Energy Production Is Needed to Reduce Reliance on Authoritarian Regimes

With oil and natural gas revenues comprising up to 40% of Russia’s federal budget, it became clear after its invasion of Ukraine that the U.S. and other countries must work to reduce purchases of oil, petroleum products, and natural gas from Russia. President Biden responded appropriately by imposing a ban on such purchases (in addition to coal) on March 8, concurrent with decisions by many private companies to self-sanction and halt energy development projects in Russia.

Of course, U.S. and global oil demand did not change after these announcements, so the U.S. must replace those Russian import volumes, which averaged 672,000 barrels per day in 2021. This has led to speculation that the Biden Administration could seek short-term relief through a number of suboptimal options, including by potentially relaxing sanctions on oil exporting countries such as Venezuela and Iran.
