2023 Frankel Cardiovascular Center Innovation Challenge Submission Deadline is Friday, February 17

The 2023 Frankel Cardiovascular Center (FCVC) Innovation Challenge will take place on Thursday, May 18, from 3:00pm-5:00pm.
Now in its seventh year, the FCVC Innovation Challenge is an annual pitch competition where teams can win funds for ideas impacting cardiovascular care. In addition, "Just Do It Awards" are selected for low-cost, low-complexity ideas. Ideas are welcome from anyone in the FCVC community: faculty, staff, trainees, patients, and family members.

Do you have an innovative idea? Are you looking for funding, collaboration, and mentorship?
FFMI fastPACE is a project-based, experiential course designed to help academics launch new innovations, including medical devices/diagnostics, digital solutions, drugs, educational/training interventions, research tools, and many others.
The multi-week course matches innovators with expert teaching team members for guidance on the development of a business case for adoption, implementation, or commercialization.
Graduates of the course have gone on to use their business case to forge new development partnerships, secure funding, and extend their network of support.

Biomedical Innovation 101 Series

|
Fast Forward Medical Innovation and the Department of Internal Medicine are hosting a webinar series to introduce the basic concepts of life science research commercialization and connect clinicians and research investigators with supportive resources.
The six-part webinar series:
- Describes the importance of commercializing research discoveries with the potential to impact human health
- Outlines and describes unique commercialization pathways based on product classification
- Identifies additional educational and product development resources.

Looking for feedback and input on your biomedical innovation? Join the FFMI team for Innovation Studio, virtual office hours that give life science innovators of all levels the chance to address project needs, challenges, or questions.
Participants can get individual feedback on:

- funding resources
- any other innovation concerns that faculty, staff, or trainees may have
The Innovation Studio is available for 30-minute consultations via Zoom every third Tuesday of the month. The next available consultations will take place Tuesday, April 18, between 2:00pm-3:30pm. Space is limited.

Research Scouts Are Ready for Submissions

Dr. Steven Kunkel, Executive Vice Dean for Research at the Medical School and Chief Scientific Officer for Michigan Medicine, recently announced that the Research Scouts funding program is now open for submissions. Research Scouts is an innovative new funding program which gives $150,000 to scientists (the “Scouts”) to invest in other scientists' bold ideas.

Coulter Translational Research Partnership Program Call for Proposals

The Coulter Program collaboratively works with U-M faculty to develop medical device concepts invented at U-M and license the related IP rights to medical device companies that complete development and seek FDA approvals. The Coulter Program has two award programs – Enlighten and Evolve.

Join Us! Engaged Mentoring Workshop through OGPS
|
|
The "Engaged Mentoring" workshop is for mentors of research trainees at any stage of training. This workshop is an evidence-based, interactive approach designed to elevate mentoring skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive research mentoring relationships. These skills will support the success of both mentors and mentees.
Register for ALL sessions within this series. The expectation is that participants will make every effort to attend both sessions in the workshop to facilitate cohort discussions. The sessions will take place in person.

Asahi Kasei Pharma Call for Proposals
|
|
Asahi Kasei Pharma is calling for new proposals for its Open Innovation program to promote pharmaceutical R&D through enhanced cooperation with universities, research institutes, and enterprises around the world.
Proposals are solicited concerning new drug seeds (drug target and drug candidate) and technologies in the therapeutic fields of autoimmune disease, renal disease, neurodegenerative disease, bone disease, and drug discovery platform technology. Submissions will be assessed for their potential for collaborative research.
The application period begins at 5:00am GMT (12:00am EST) on Thursday, January 5, 2023, and ends at 8:00am GMT (3:00am EST) on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

MICHR's New K12 Scholars Program Accepting Applications Through Wednesday, March 1
|
|
Applications are now open for the new MICHR K12, a two-year award that provides protected research time, mentorship, and competency-based career development for translational scholars with a doctoral degree in a clinical or health focus (e.g., M.D., D.D.S., PharmD, Ph.D.). Awardees will receive career development training in addition to concierge-level support as they connect with the vast U-M resources.

2023 Massey TBI Grand Challenge
|
|
Do you have an idea that could help patients with traumatic brain injury? The 2023 Massey TBI Grand Challenge kicks off on Thursday, March 9! Up to $800,000 is available this year to support the development of diagnostic, device, therapeutic, and health IT solutions addressing the initial "golden hours" of care after severe TBI.
Join the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation on the morning of the 9th for an informative kickoff session. This is a great chance to learn more about the Grand Challenge process, network with fellow innovators, and see the support services we have available for participating teams.

Consider nominating your mentor for the 2023 Distinguished Clinical & Translational Research Mentor Award. This award is part of MICHR's continuing efforts to foster a culture of learning, especially in the area of clinical and health research. This award recognizes the value of mentoring at U-M in helping early-career investigators to reach across disciplinary boundaries in pursuit of science.

MNORC Pilot/Feasibility Grants Call for Proposals

The Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center Pilot/Feasibility Grant Program promotes research on the biological and behavioral determinants of obesity, and develops interventions to reduce obesity and its disease sequelae using basic, clinical, or population approaches. This specific P/F program’s aim is to enable Underrepresented Minority Backgrounds postdoctoral fellows and early-stage investigators to generate sufficient preliminary information for a successful application for major research funding from NIH or other national granting agencies.

UROP sponsors nine summer research fellowship programs for U-M undergraduate students who are eager to get involved in research. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and advanced graduate students are eligible to be UROP research mentors.
