A Resource for Students:

The Student Support Team

Students may experience a variety of unexpected challenges during their time at Stony Brook University. The Student Support Team coordinates efforts to assist students who may encounter barriers to success such as hospitalization, mental health concerns, death of a loved one, or financial difficulties. We are here to help!

Our purpose is to empower students to overcome obstacles to their growth both inside and outside the classroom. We welcome any opportunity to provide consultation, answer questions, respond to concerns, or direct students to the resource best equipped to meet their needs. We have friends all across campus!

The Student Support Team has also initiated a brand new Peer Support Intern Program this year! Students can now connect with our well-trained student interns to discuss ideas on how to get involved on campus and learn about the incredible range of resources that are available to them.

Tips from Students

What's it like to be a student at SBU? Hear it from a Seawolf!

We hear from two students, Marie Yamamoto and Caroline Fabian, who are both Student Support Team student assistants. They speak about what students can do if they're struggling, either with academics or personal issues, and where they can go for help.

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

Salt shaker

While every student will experience some challenging moments on their path to meeting their academic goals, the majority of Stony Brook students will find that they are able to quickly resolve most problems they experience. As parents, we may be tempted to pick up the phone and try to “solve” an issue for our young adult, but it is important that students learn to advocate for themselves and attain the skills of negotiating life’s difficult moments.

As we continue with our salt shaker metaphor, we want to gently sprinkle ideas of how to assist our students in gaining problem-solving skills and understanding how important it is to be able to confidently communicate for themselves and seek support, when needed. If your student is struggling with academic concerns, you may want to gently suggest they speak directly with their faculty member or teaching assistant during office hours or utilize the Academic Success and Tutoring Center. If they seem to be having a tough time with personal struggles, ask if they are aware of the Student Support Team or the Center for Prevention and Outreach

Let your student know you trust that they are able to work independently to resolve issues they may be confronted with, but be sure to remind them that there are plenty of supportive resources on campus to assist them with that process!

Career and Internships

Career Coaches Are Here to Help!

Your student can meet with career coaches to discover career opportunities, prepare for the job and internship search, and connect with industry professionals.

Appointments with career coaches can be made either in person or virtually through Handshake and drop in’s are available through Career Center Everywhere.
