Dear Community Partners:

Welcome to “Leading Mobility: The Journey Forward,” a new monthly email newsletter to keep you informed on how our 3,700 employees are connecting communities to create opportunity through DART’s projects and initiatives.

It is my honor to lead DART at a time when we are celebrating our 40-year history and planning for the next 40 years. When I became CEO in the summer of 2021, we were beginning to work our way out of the unprecedented challenges brought by the pandemic. Today, we are turning those challenges into opportunities, with a renewed focus on operational integrity and the customer experience.

The ability to move about efficiently is vital to our region’s economic productivity and quality of life. Transit, as a public service, creates a range of benefits that are enjoyed by users and non-users alike. To borrow from the American Public Transportation Association, “Public transportation gets all of us where we need to go, even if we don’t ride.”

In the coming months, we will share more about the tenets of our new strategic plan, highlights of our transformative Silver Line Regional Rail project, and a recap of our first ever State of the Agency event that is scheduled for next Thursday, Nov. 16, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. If you have not yet registered to attend, you can learn more here and RSVP by emailing ExecutiveEvents@DART.org

In today’s edition, you’ll discover more about:

  • Our Value of Transit Study
  • New DART Board of Directors Chair Gary Slagel
  • City Spotlight on Richardson, one of our service area cities

We hope you enjoy this inaugural edition of our newsletter. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at LeadingMobility@DART.org.
Best,
President & Chief Executive Officer

Understanding the Value of Transit
DART conducted a “Value of Transit” study to better understand what is important to riders, the communities we serve, and key stakeholders. Findings about the value of transit – and by extension DART – fell into three categories.

DART Board Director Spotlight – Chair Gary Slagel
In October, the DART Board of Directors elected Gary Slagel as their chair for a two-year term. Slagel represents the cities of Richardson and University Park, and the towns of Addison and Highland Park.

Slagel’s association with DART began in 1987, when he was elected to the Richardson City Council, and then later served as Richardson’s mayor. He joined the DART Board in late 2011, taking the place of another former Richardson mayor, Ray Noah.

City Spotlight – Richardson
Each month, we will spotlight a city in the DART Service Area and the service that DART provides.

DART is a key part of Richardson’s economic development strategy. When the city’s DART Rail stations opened in 2002, three of the four stations were surrounded by green fields. Access to rail and bus service attracted investors, and today, those stations are portals to transit-oriented development.
