Changing Our Stories at Thanksgiving
The Indigenous Solidarity Network has developed a toolkit geared for white folks to discuss settler privilege and Thanksgiving with family, friends, and broader community.

As the introduction of the "Rethinking 'Thanksgiving' Toolkit" states, "There are many different experiences we will have over Thanksgiving - some of us will have lots of food, some of us will struggle to have enough. Some will be surrounded by people and some will be alone or with just one other person. For many, it’s an important time of coming together with family. This day also gives us a chance to look at and change stories we have about our families and ourselves. Thanksgiving is based on myths that hide and erase the genocide that the United States is founded upon. What would it mean to tell a different story; an honest story?"
Power in Aging
This past Friday on MANP Connects, we were so grateful to spend time talking with Jess Mauer, Executive Director of Maine Council on Aging, about the Power in Aging project and the ways that ageism shows up in workplaces. (You can download an audio recording here.) This project focuses on building an age positive Maine with facilitated conversations, tips on how to be more inclusive in your language, ideas to take action in your organization and community, and a sign-on pledge to hold you accountable.

Plus, one of our go-to sources for great communications advice, FrameWorks Institute, has a toolkit full of ideas to help those in the field of aging build a better understanding of aging, ageism, and what it will take to create a more age-integrated society.

Support the Universal Charitable Deduction
The universal charitable (non-itemizer) deduction will expire at the end of the year unless Congress takes action to extend it. The giving incentive for individuals who take the standard deduction was created on an bipartisan basis in the early days of the pandemic to generate additional resources to support the work of charitable organizations. It was increased at the end of 2020 to the current level of $300 for individuals and $600 for couples, but is set to expire on December 31, 2021.

The Charitable Giving Coalition encourages nonprofits to sign onto a letter urging congressional leaders to support expanding and extending the universal charitable deduction in year-end legislation. The letter is open for signers until December 1.
