Market Recap

For the week, the DJIA dropped 1,231.42 points, or 4%, to close at 29,590.41. The S&P lost 180.03 points, or 4.65%, ending at 3,693.23. The Nasdaq fell 581.10 points, or 5%, closing at 10,867.93

Investors continue to worry that the Federal Reserve's aggressive approach to rein in inflation could trigger a recession.

A gauge of future U.S. economic activity declined for a sixth straight month in August, potentially signaling a recession amid large interest rate increases from the Federal Reserve.

The Federal Reserve delivered its third straight interest rate increase of three-quarters of a percentage point on Wednesday and signaled a high likelihood of at least one more move of that size this year.

The Fed's projections showed the economy slowing to a crawl in 2022, with year-end growth of 0.2%, rising to 1.2% in 2023, well below the economy's potential. The unemployment rate, currently at 3.7%, is projected to rise to 3.8% this year and to 4.4% in 2023.

The Fed's aggressive monetary policy tightening has also had a significant impact on the housing market, compared to the labor market and consumer spending, where demand remains fairly strong.

The typical home value in the US last month dropped 0.3% from July to $356,054, still up almost 14% from a year earlier and 44% since August 2019. Home values decreased for the second straight month in August.

Confidence among U.S. single-family homebuilders fell for the ninth straight month in September as soaring mortgage rates and persistently high prices for building materials made new housing less affordable. U.S. existing home sales dropped for a seventh straight month in August.

Household rents in 2021 jumped 10% from pre-pandemic levels, according to Census Bureau estimates released last week. The figures came as rising healthcare and rental costs pushed U.S. consumer prices up unexpectedly last month.

U.S. mortgage interest rates reached 6.25%, the highest level since October 2008.

The Philadelphia Fed Bank's monthly non-manufacturing activity index rose to 2.5 in September from -3.7 in the previous month, indicating growth in the sector. The reading for new orders increased but remained below the breakeven point.

U.S. labor market (job growth) remained solid this week even as recession signals grow stronger.

Three major U.S. banks are raising their prime lending rates to the highest levels since the global financial crisis of 2008.

Friday Recap: Wall Streets Tumbles as Investors Fear Recession

U.S. and European stocks tumbled on Friday, the dollar scaled a 22-year high and bonds sold off again as fears grew that a central bank prescription of raising interest rates to tame inflation will drag major economies into recession.

The Dow narrowly avoided ending more than 20% lower than its Jan. 4 record all-time closing peak of 36,799.64 points, meaning the blue-chip index did not attain a bear market label, according to a widely used definition.

Britain's new finance minister unleashed historic tax cuts and huge increases in borrowing on Friday in an economic agenda that floored financial markets, sending sterling and British government bonds into freefall.

U.S. business activity contracted for a third straight month in September though the pace of decline slowed.

The Kansas City Federal Reserve's monthly composite services index rose to a reading of 20 in September after an increase to 14 in August, suggesting further acceleration.

The heads of the nation's largest banks faced pointed criticism on Thursday from Republicans complaining the firms are inappropriately taking liberal stances on social and cultural issues.

The U.S. current account deficit narrowed sharply in the second quarter amid a surge in goods exports.

Gold prices dropped over 1.6% to their lowest since April 2020 on Friday, hurt by an unrelenting rally in the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields as the Federal Reserve adopts a more aggressive stance to check surging inflation.

Other precious metals also fell sharply and faced weekly falls. Spot silver declined 4% to $18.90 per ounce, while platinum lost 4.8% to $861.00. Palladium dropped 4.7% to $2,070.50.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 486.27 points, or 1.62%, to close at 29,590.41; the S&P 500 lost 64.76 points, of 1.72%, ending at 3,693.23; the Nasdaq Composite fell 198.88 points, or 1.80%, closing at 10,867.93.

For the week, the DJIA dropped 1,231.42 points, or 4%, to close at 29,590.41. The S&P lost 180.03 points, or 4.65%, ending at 3,693.23. The Nasdaq fell 581.10 points, or 5%, closing at 10,867.93.

A Note from Yvonne Celia

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. ~ 2 Cor 4:1 (ESV)

While Paul is not referring to the ministry of FISM, I use this to remind us of our own unworthiness amidst the difficulties we’ve faced this year. The fact that we are called to such a work is a source of strength. We cannot give up sharing Jesus.

I’ve been blessed by those of you who have taken the time to contact me with words of encouragement, comments, and suggestions. As you can imagine, while we can’t follow every listener’s suggestions, we do welcome and consider all input. I appreciate it as it shows that, at the very least, you are listening!

I have received so many encouraging messages from you all. As to those messages of how we can improve or return things to how they were with Dan, I thought it might be helpful to share my perspective and heart.

May I say that Dan was very good at what he did, and we all miss him so much, both personally and for what he brought to this Ministry, its staff, partners, and listeners in his own unique way. Dan had 25 years of on-air experience, expertise in behavioral economics, an uncanny ability for recall, and yes, no constraints on sharing his opinion! I believe he was truly anointed of the Holy Spirit - an answer to his daily prayer - to be “as a son of Issachar”!

We are all so thankful for the years Dan had to invest in and mentor our leadership team at FISM, Shana, and all of you! We are all doing our best to take up his torch and continue God’s calling on our Ministry. We know that the FISM will never look exactly the same without Dan, but our desire is to honor his legacy and follow God’s lead through the unexpected.

In Isaiah 43:19 the Lord says to His people: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

None of us can be Dan, nor is that what God is calling us to. Instead we have committed ourselves to honor His legacy and to be faithful to the new thing God is doing through FISM.

For example, the show continues to be formatted as Dan had established it, but also reflects our changing circumstances. Like Dan, Shana loves the Lord and is fiercely committed to sharing the Truth and encouraging biblical stewardship. As a financial advisor, she was mentored by Dan and, although she does not yet have the years of experience Dan had as a radio host and economist, she excels at what she does. We have certainly seen God’s anointing on Shana as she has taken on Dan’s mantle and has grown in both confidence and wisdom over the past six months.

Shana is passionate about America, as was Dan, and knows the political climate greatly impacts our economy and investments. As Dan opened the show by addressing the more pressing current events relevant to Christians and investors, this has also been Shana’s format. After that intro, she aims to take as many questions as possible -- but she also needs to satisfy the obligations to our sponsors - all in 1 hour!

Please remember that Dan had 3 hours to share his often-passionate views and opinions, whereas Shana currently only has the one hour. Dan also no longer had the constraints of a brokerage firm or the licensing that Shana still maintains as she continues her business as a financial advisor.

Finally, please also remember that Dan always emphasized that partnership was meant to primarily be self-managed as even he could not possibly address everyone’s unique questions or needs. Dan did his best to address most of these questions within the Financial Issues website. We continue this with the Partner Instructional Videos (which we will soon be updating), the Allocation Models, the Buy List, and Shana’s weekly Commentary and monthly Conference Calls. We also have now established the Helpful Videos page on both our new FISM App and on our websites.

Does the show, website, etc. need tweaking? Absolutely and ongoing. Are there things that are different or perhaps lacking since Dan’s passing? Without a doubt. But I am so thankful for Shana who voluntarily stepped up to the sudden and daunting task of keeping the show going for all of you in the midst of her own grief. And our leadership team is focused on shoring up our foundations and building on our strengths to God’s glory, and hopefully to the benefit of all of you.

Please know that we are trying our best to serve our partners and listeners. We believe that there is a pressing need to promote biblically-responsible investing -- actually more so every day. Some have commented that they would like more “financial” issues covered during the program. We agree that we need to increase the financial focus and advice – and we are working on it. We hope to extend the show an additional 30-60 minutes in the future and to also provide some new additions to the ministry to more greatly benefit our partners. I say all this to simply ask that you please bear with us.

Thank you all for caring about this ministry. Please continue to reach out to me. We could not do what we do without you!

As always, I’d like to invite you to share your comments and concerns, prayer requests and praises with me at yvonne@fism.tv. I will make every attempt to connect with you via email.

PLEASE do not ask me financial questions, you WILL be disappointed!

Sincerely,

Yvonne

Government Shutdown Looms as Opposition to Manchin’s Permitting Bill Increases

The impasse threatens a must-pass government funding bill scheduled for the floor next week.

Ian Patrick, FISM News

In a recent press conference, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin remarked that “politics make strange bedfellows” regarding the bipartisan support for an energy permitting bill he put forward. Unfortunately, the bedfellows might be having a falling out.

A growing number of Republicans in the Senate say they won’t support Joe Manchin’s permitting reform bill for energy provisions because it doesn’t go far enough. More progressive Democrats, meanwhile, oppose the legislation for its focus on starting new non-green energy projects.

This all flies in the face of Manchin, who had presented the bill as a “good piece of legislation that’s extremely balanced” and one he negotiated…(READ MORE)

Near 100-Day Streak of Declining Gas Prices Ends

Earlier this month, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that gas prices could increase this winter, FISM reported.

Chris Lange, FISM News

Average gas prices in the U.S. rose yesterday for the first time in 98 days. The national gas average currently sits at $3.68, AAA.com data shows, up from $3.19 a year ago and $2.39 on former President Donald Trump’s last day in office.

The data shows people in most Western states are still paying well above $4 per gallon, including a national-high average of $5.519 in California, while states in the southeast remain just above $3 per gallon.

The price of U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil climbed above $88 a barrel last week for the first time since August…(READ MORE)

House Passes Electoral Reform Bill Despite Competing Plan in Senate

Cheney’s bill passed 229-203, mostly along partisan lines. Cheney and eight Republicans joined the balance of Democrats in voting to pass.

Willie R. Tubbs, FISM News

Why have one electoral count bill up for negotiations when you can have two?

Wednesday, the House sent an expanded electoral reform bill to the Senate, where Republicans and Democrats were nearing a bicameral agreement on a filibuster-proof piece of legislation.

“I much prefer our bill, which is the product of months of study, input from constitutional and election experts and is a bill that has garnered widespread bipartisan support,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said during an interview with CNN.

New Study Supports Graham’s Lifesaving Abortion Legislation

He also stated in a lengthy Twitter thread that his bill was a “common-sense protection of the unborn” as it falls “in line with 47 out of 50 European countries.

Trey Paul, FISM News

A recent report providing data on late-term abortions is shedding more light on a controversial piece of legislation proposed by Sen. Lindsey Graham last week.

Sen. Lindsey Graham received harsh pushback from Democrats, and even some within his own party, after he announced the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act that would set federal limits on late-term abortions. Some legislators and pundits argued against the bill saying it was unnecessary as late-term abortions are practically non-existent.

According to a fact sheet compiled by researchers with the Lozier Institute, however, 6% of all reported abortions take place at or after 15 weeks of gestation, translating to approximately 55,800…(READ MORE)

Australian scientists have discovered that an active component of honeybee venom is effective at killing two different types of breast cancer cells, some in as little as 60 minutes.

The research, which was published earlier this month in NJP Precision Oncology, details that this powerful anti-tumor agent was effective at destroying cancer-causing cells in mice.

Scientists at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Perth, Australia used the venom from 312 honeybees and bumblebees to test the effect of the venom on different types of breast cancer, including triple-negative breast cancer and HER2 cancer cells, which are aggressive and very hard…(READ MORE)

Vanderbilt Hospital Execs Tout Child Sex Surgeries as ‘Big Money Maker,’ Threaten Objectors

“If you are going to assert [a] conscientious objection, you have to realize that that is problematic,” Clayton said.

Chris Lange, FISM News

In a set of shocking videos published this week, a Vanderbilt transgender clinic executive said that one reason for the clinic performing irreversible transgender surgeries on minors is that they are a “big money maker.” Another video showed the clinic’s lawyer admitting to threatening staffers who objected to the surgeries.

Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee has called for a probe into the Pediatric Transgender Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) after the disturbing videos were posted by Daily Wire host Matt Walsh.

Vanderbilt opened its trans clinic in 2018. Later that year, the clinic’s Medical Director, Dr. Shayne Taylor, boasted at a Medicine Grand Rounds lecture about how she persuaded the Nashville university to enter the lucrative industry of body mutilation on minors…(READ MORE)

Putin Says He’s ‘Not Bluffing’ as He Threatens West with Nukes

Putin’s remarks came against the backdrop of a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Chris Lange, FISM News

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday again raised the specter of nuclear war with an explicit warning to the West that he is “not bluffing” on his threat to use nuclear weapons, Reuters reported.

This time, the threat is backed by new referenda to annex four Russian separatist regions, a move analysts say will lend itself to a potential justification of the use of atomic weapons under the Kremlin’s nuclear doctrine.

During a seven-minute televised speech, the Russian leader accused the West of engaging in “nuclear blackmail” and plotting to destroy his country, pointing to NATO’s recent expansion toward Russia’s borders with Sweden and Finland’s respective admissions…(READ MORE)

Special Master Dearie: Trump’s Attorneys Need to Prove Seized Documents Were Declassified

The question that now has to be answered is whether or not the 100 documents seized by the FBI and marked “classified” were specifically declassified by Trump while he was president.

Matt Bush, FISM News

Special Master Raymond Dearie laid out a plan for reviewing the documents seized by the FBI during a raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate last month.

In the first public hearing on the matter on Tuesday, Dearie’s comments show that he intends to place the burden of proof on former president Trump, saying that a broad declassification of documents at the end of his tenure was not enough to prevent the DOJ from having access to items seized during the raid.

Biden’s ‘Pandemic is Over’ Remark Gives GOP New Budgetary Ammo

The big question, for Burr and numerous other ranking Republicans, is why the administration wants another $22.5 billion in COVID funding...

Willie R. Tubbs, FISM News

President Joe Biden’s proclamation that the COVID pandemic has ended might have been meant as a self-congratulatory remark as the midterms loom, but it could cost Biden big in his fight for more spending.

“The pandemic is over,” Biden said during an interview with “60 Minutes.” “We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it … but the pandemic is over.”

Ukraine Update: Russia Challenges Western Resolve to Avoid Military Confrontation, Moscow Accused of ‘Nuclear Terrorism’

Annexing Donetsk and Luhansk would give Russia veto power over Western influence in Ukraine; namely, NATO membership.

Chris Lange, FISM News

A top Kremlin security official praised separatist referendums proposed by Russian-backed leaders in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk’s People’s Republics. Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, touted the proposals as a way for Russia to annex the territories.

The move would test the resolve of the U.S. and European allies who have been careful to avoid direct military conflict with Russia.

House Republicans Say They Can Prove President Biden Tied to Business Deals with China

These promises included that Biden would run for president and that those who worked with them would “reap the rewards in a future Biden administration.”

Ian Patrick, FISM News

The investigation into President Biden’s alleged dealings with China took a new turn on Tuesday.

According to Republicans on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, President Joe Biden was heavily involved in his family’s business of selling American natural gas to China while he was running for president. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the Republicans led by Ranking Member James Comer (Ky.) say they have the documents to prove it.

Republicans Call for Special Counsel Status in Hunter Biden Investigation

Chris Lieberman, FISM News

Senate Republicans have written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking him to grant U.S. Attorney David Weiss the status of special counsel as he investigates Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.

The letter, organized by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and signed by 33 GOP senators, lists a number of concerns the senators have with Garland’s running of the Department of Justice (DOJ), including the FBI’s handling of the Hunter Biden investigation.

Citing the resulting lack of public faith in the DOJ, Republicans are now calling on Garland to give Weiss special counsel status…(READ MORE)

U.S. border patrol agents have encountered over 2 million migrants at the southwest border in a historic first under the Biden administration’s lax border policies, but those numbers alone don’t reflect the full horror of the border crisis.

Health Experts: Mandated COVID Boosters for Young Adults Are ‘Ethically Unjustifiable’

Lauren Dempsey, FISM News

MS in Biomedicine and Law, RN

A new pre-print analysis of information from a CDC and FDA reports suggests that there is a legitimate ethical argument against COVID-19 vaccine mandates in young adults, especially concerning booster shots.

The risk-benefit analysis was authored by nine health experts from top universities, including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Oxford, as well as hospital systems and public health departments. 24 State AGs Respond to Credit Company Plans to Track Gun Purchases

Second Amendment advocates fear that these tracking codes are part of a greater ploy to spy on the gun purchases of law-abiding citizens.

A group of 24 state attorneys general delivered a letter on Tuesday to the CEOs of American Express, Visa, and Mastercard, expressing concerns about their plans to track gun purchases.

Transgender Summit Official Supports Calling CPS If Parents Don’t Affirm Gender Dysphoria

CPS employees in Georgia had stepped in when parents in Georgia were reluctant to embrace their child’s new transgender status...

Savannah Hulsey Pointer, FISM News

During the “Adolescent” session of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) annual conference Monday, the author of the new WPATH guidelines encouraged health care workers to threaten parents with Child Protective Services (CPS) if they don’t affirm their child’s “gender identity.”

The author, Dr. Ren Massey, is a female Clinical Child Psychologist who identifies as a “transman.” She asserted that a parent’s lack of support for a child’s transgender identity needs to be addressed, even if it means calling CPS, to ensure that gender dysphoria is affirmed, according to The Daily Wire.

House Narrowly Passes Four Policing Bills Sponsored by Vulnerable Dems

The progressive caucus has held strong to their desire to defund the police, while others on the left have tried to distance themselves...

Chris Lange, FISM News

Vulnerable House Democrats hoping to pass four policing and public safety bills ahead of the midterms got their wish on Thursday in an 11th-hour vote that progressive “squad” members nearly derailed.

Party leaders spent several hours trying to rein in members of the progressive caucus who were threatening to block the procedural vote over a lack of police accountability measures.

Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Cori Bush (D-Mo.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) objected to the exclusion of accountability measures Democrats sought after the death of George Floyd. Christians in Politics: Al Mohler and Faith & Freedom Coalition Encourage Christians to Vote [Op-Ed]

The Christian Post reported that the Faith & Freedom Coalition, a Christian political action group, is spending $40 million to encourage Christians to vote in the upcoming midterms.

Seth Udinski, FISM News

As the 2022 midterm elections approach, Christians in America are wrestling with the question: How involved should we be in pushing for a political candidate or agenda?

Two separate reports have arisen that speak to this difficult question. The first came about last week, when prominent Southern Baptist theologian Al Mohler spoke at the Family Research Council’s “Pray, Vote, Stand” conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Mohler boldly declared that Christians need to “vote the right way” in upcoming elections, claiming “the big battles are still to come.” Mohler is a conservative, and it seems likely that he was encouraging Christians to vote to flip the House and Senate back…(READ MORE)
