Casa Cornelia Law Center

Carmen M. Chavez, Esq. - Executive Director

Casa Cornelia Law Center remains steadfast in its commitment to providing legal services for unaccompanied children, regardless of recent funding interruptions by the current administration. The need for these services continues to be urgent. In 2024 alone, we served 1,016 vulnerable children fleeing violence, trafficking, and extreme hardship to ensure access to legal representation. Without this support, many would face deportation to dangerous conditions, alone and defenseless.

Long before funding existed, Casa Cornelia answered the call to take on this vital work, and we remain unwavering in our mission to protect these children. Our commitment is not driven by funding but by our ethical duty to shield them from further harm. Legal representation is not just a service—it is a necessity, protecting children from exploitation, abuse, and unjust deportation.

“How a society treats its children is a direct indicator of its values and priorities.” These words compel us to act, not just speak. Casa Cornelia will be there for these children, many of whom are detained and must go through a court process. But we cannot do it alone. We need attorneys, interpreters, translators, and advocates to step forward. Justice requires action—not just words.

A society that turns its back on its most vulnerable has lost its way. Let us prove who we are through action. Whether by offering legal expertise, sharing resources, or spreading awareness. Every effort matters.

Every day, our afterschool students and Teen Leaders walk past an abandoned lot that has been a longtime eyesore in our community. But thanks to their dedication and a partnership with 4-H and the Master Gardener’s Program through Penn Extension, we are transforming this neglected space into something beautiful: a thriving pollinator garden. This project isn’t just about planting flowers. It’s about cultivating a space to grow, learn, and connect. The garden will provide a sanctuary for pollinators, ensuring a healthier environment while also serving as a welcoming community space. We’re starting with vibrant flowers and spices but hope to grow vegetables to share with the community. More than a garden, this will be a gathering place. We plan to host community events, educational workshops, and opportunities for our students and neighbors to engage with nature in a meaningful way. Through this initiative, our young people are learning firsthand how care, collaboration, and commitment can turn something overlooked into something beautiful. With every seed planted, we are restoring not just the land but the spirit of our neighborhood.

South Central Los Angeles Ministry Project (SC LAMP)

Diana Pinto - Executive Director

The immigration challenges facing South Central LAMP in 2025 are daunting, with families living in fear of uncertainty, policies shifting unpredictably, and resources stretched thin. Mothers arrive at our doors anxious about their futures while their children's well-being hanging in the balance. Yet, amid these struggles, a powerful force of hope and resilience rises—our staff, board, community and supporters who refuse to let fear win.

This is why our Empowerment Awards matter more than ever. On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, we will shine a spotlight on the unwavering commitment of those who have stood beside us, ensuring that our families continue to receive the education, resources, and encouragement they need.

We are proud to honor Marilyn N. Stambler, President of the Friars Charitable Foundation, with the Person of the Year Award. Her continued generosity has strengthened our mission.

We celebrate Valerie Woodard, a devoted kindergarten teacher at St. Martin of Tours School, who rallies her students twice a year to provide SCLAMP with donations that have included over 300 backpacks filled with art supplies.

We also recognize Maria Alcalde and Fr. Paul Fitzpatrick of St. Martin of Tours Church. Their congregation has led with faith and action, delivering steadfast support by providing yearly diaper drives for our community. Their efforts are not just gestures of goodwill; they are lifelines.

When we gather for this event, we will do so with gratitude and determination, knowing that, together, we are a force stronger than fear.
