" In truth, yoga doesn't take time. It gives time."
Ganga White

It's hard to believe we are already here, the end of November, ready to enter the last month of the year...And what a year it's been.

Let's create a surplus of energy
Are you running on empty? Are the cooler and darker days of the season combined with the busyness of the upcoming holidays affecting your energy levels? If so, you're not alone. This month we share two simple but effective yogic tips to enter this last month of 2021 with energy on our side. Let's end this year with a surplus of energy.
Want more energy?
Two Energy Enhancing Tips
Yoga for Energy Tip One:
Don't just do something; lie there!

Sometimes the answer to more energy is found in relaxation. The permission to take a moment, lie there and be still; to experience the simple feeling of being, right here, right now, exactly the way things are.

Three tips to include daily relaxation:
  1. Set a realistic goal. Something like — This week I will practice seven minutes of daily relaxation;
  2. Remind yourself of the value of relaxation because we always make time for what we value; and
  3. Invite family or friends to also take up the practice.

What you need:
  1. A place to lie down;
  2. A willingness to practice even when you don't feel like it; and
  3. Personal adjusting for comfort e.g. pillow under the knees, eye pillow...
Yoga for Energy Tip Two:
Come to Class
We are not only saying this because we enjoy seeing you but because practicing in a group setting with the guidance of a teacher enhances energy and supports motivation.

The gift is in the consistency
Come once, twice or more per week just be consistent and with practice, experience your energy increase.

Time and energy
We always find time for the things we value. When we value our energy we create more energy!

Beyond Wellness
Functional Strength Training with Andy

"Mike, a senior client, started training with Andy 8 years ago, and says "I HATE exercise, but LOVE the results."
What is Functional Training?

For many who have come back to the studios you may have noticed Beyond’s most recent service offering in the Earth room, ‘Beyond Boutique Fitness’.

This private studio space allows you to work with our trainer and take you through a resistance plan designed specifically to help you achieve your functional strength goals. But what exactly is functional strength? Today we have our head trainer Andy explain….

As we age, we tend to focus primarily on career and family. We often get to the halfway point of our lives, and suddenly we start noticing things. One day you might notice you are a step slower, (and you started breathing heavier when you found this out). You wake up one morning and for some reason your back hurts or your knees hurt, and your shoulders, forget it!

That’s when a realization creeps in that you have focused so hard on everything else, that taking a few hours a week to take care of your own health somehow got left behind. This is probably why the average age of my client when they get started is 50, which is why I focused my programming around functional training.

Functional Training is the basic art of restoring physical ability when we do things. Essentially, it is training to be able to do the things we do in our lives more easily.

The programming centers around movement. We push things, we pull things, we bend over and pick them up, we squat down and get up again, we step on things, we twist side to side. This is basic human function, and we utilize all different kinds of resistance exercises to re-establish, maintain or improve, with greater efficiency, speed, and capability.

The great side effect is, as you strengthen your body, many of the things that niggled you become less and eventually pain free, thus as you get more functional, you simply feel better.

And as your ability grows, so does your opportunity to do more things in life you can enjoy. It can be as simple as playing with the kids, gardening, a building project or taking a nature hike. All of this reaps benefits of being functionally capable and strong.

As Bruce Lee once said “if you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done”.
