In the description of the mabbul [flood] a scant three lines are devoted to the destruction of all flesh (Gen. 7:21-23). Yet we read in great detail of the journey of the water, its sources, its levels, its duration. We read of how the waters lifted the ark, floated the ark, submerged the mountains. The earth was immersed in water as if, teaches Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, the mabbul became a giant Mikvah – surrounding the earth, purifying it, renewing it. Rather than the mabbul as the ultimate destruction, the mabbul is the ultimate cleansing. Just as one enters the Mikvah with every part of one’s body open to its waters, so the great Mikvah of the mabbul touched all the earth, even to the highest mountains, immersing and transforming it.

It is as if God said, “Take two.” Following the Mikvah is the resumption of natural time (Gen. 8:22), the blessing for fertility (Gen. 9:1) and the creation of the first covenant (Gen.9:8ff). Indeed, it is the very covenant, whose sign in a bow hung up in the clouds, a bow no longer to be shot against the earth and humanity, that confirms this purification. It is as if the bow will now hold up the clouds, preventing them from unleashing the water that had covered the earth. God has entered into a new relationship with humanity and the earth. There will not be another mabbul. Now it us up to us to protect the earth that has been purified on our behalf.
