Our Response to Macy’s Closure at the Historic Wanamaker Building

The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia acknowledges the closure of Macy’s department store at the historic Wanamaker Building with a deep sense of loss. This marks the end of an era for a historic site that has been a cornerstone of Center City’s identity for generations.

Despite this moment of change, we are confident in the Wanamaker Building’s future as a cherished landmark. The Grand Court, its crown jewel, is fully protected from demolition and inappropriate alteration by its 2017 designation on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. Iconic features like the seven-story atrium, marble arcades, gilded colonnades, the Wanamaker Eagle, and the visible components of the world’s largest functioning pipe organ are safeguarded, ensuring the space’s continued role as a civic and cultural centerpiece.

For over a century, the Grand Court has been a beacon of architectural splendor and public gathering. Since the Wanamaker nameplate was first removed in 1995, multiple retail identities have come and gone, including Lord & Taylor, Hecht’s, and Strawbridge's, before Macy’s took over in 2006. We are optimistic that a new tenant will once again embrace this legacy, adapting the space to meet modern retail demands while honoring its historic grandeur.

We also salute the invaluable work of the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ, whose dedication has ensured that this extraordinary instrument will continue to inspire future generations. As the Wanamaker Building enters a new phase, the Preservation Alliance stands ready to advocate for its thoughtful reuse and enduring vitality.
