Book Group for August

TONIGHT! - AUG. 3 @ 6PM

For the August Book Club meeting, we will be reading The Godmothers by Camille Aubray.

Meet the Godmothers: Filomena, Amie, Lucy, and Petrina all have secrets they'd like to keep hidden as they become part of this prosperous family in Greenwich Village. But the women’s pasts lead to unforeseen consequences and betrayals that threaten to unravel all their carefully laid plans when their husbands go off to fight in the war.

We will be meeting TONIGHT, Thursday, August 3 at 6:00 PM, in Henslee Hall. Bring what you'd like to eat and drink, and any friends (even from outside Good Sam) who you think would enjoy our group. See you there!

Blessing of the Backpacks

THIS Sunday, Aug. 6

8:15 & 10:30 am services

Believe it or not, back to school is NEXT WEEK!

THIS Sunday, August 6, at both the 8:15 and 10:30 am services, we’re celebrating the Blessing of the Backpacks. We invite all children, youth and teachers to bring their backpacks and book-bags to church for a blessing. You'll get an awesome tag to hang on your backpack & book-bags to remind you that God's love and God's presence is always with you.

Eucharistic Visitor Ministry & Training

TRAINING:

THIS SUNDAY

After the Late Service

Eucharistic Visitors (EVs) have the special joy of sharing the sacramental meal we share at the altar each week with those in the parish not able to be with us on Sunday mornings. Serving as an EV is a ministry of connection and care reminding all of us that "we who are many are one body, for we all share in one bread, one cup."

As an EV, you may set up visits as works best with your calendar and the calendar of those whom you're visiting. There is not an expected day or time that visits must happen - nor is this ministry a weekly responsibility. Depending on the number of EVs, you will probably be scheduled about one week a month - again, with the flexibility to schedule visits during your appointed week as works best for you (not necessarily on Sunday after church).

This is a ministry with a lot of flexibility that would work well for many different people with different schedules and demands on their time. You also do not have to serve as a Eucharistic Minister (those who assist at the altar and administer the chalice on Sundays) in order to serve as a Eucharistic Visitor.

Please see the included video (at the end of this article) of Jan Travins sharing her experience and joy of serving as an EV.

Training for Eucharistic Visitors will take place on Sunday, August 6, following the 10:30am service.

Please think and pray if you may be called to this ministry. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mother Elizabeth or Elizabeth Colonna.

Kick-off Breakfast @ Good Sam

Join us in Henslee Hall on Sunday, August 13 at 9:30 am for a light continental breakfast for EVERYONE. There will be slide-shows on both TV's - one about the 2023 Mission Trip and one about Children's Sunday School/formation.

Good Sam

Ministry Fair &

Open House

August 20 & 27

9:30am

Have you ever wondered about all the different Ministries at Good Sam? On August 20 & 27, you’ll have a chance to learn more about all the ways that we serve each other, our community, and the world! We will be hosting a Ministry Fair on those two Sundays in Henslee Hall during the 9:30am Formation time. You will be able to learn more about Worship and Formation on the 20th and about Ministries focused on Prayer, Giving, and Serving on the 27th. Sign-up sheets for all Ministries will be available both days and online. An updated Guide to Participation will be available soon to guide you as your prayerfully consider putting your talents to work in our community.

In addition, we'll be having a wonderful Open House downstairs for children and youth. Drop by and learn about plans for our young folks during the program year!

Family Promise Fundraiser:

Pasta & Bluegrass

6pm - 8pm on August 26

Sacred Heart Cathedral Hall

Please buy a ticket and support Family Promise! For those who do not feel comfortable spending the night with our families when we host Family Promise at Good Sam, this is a fun way to help support this wonderful ministry.

For Tickets - Go HERE

The Pasta and Bluegrass Festival is a great way to support Family Promise. It has been going on for several years but isn't something Good Sam has actively supported in the past. It is held at Sacred Heart Cathedral Hall from 6pm-8pm on August 26. It is my understanding that the food and pasta tasting and judging are held inside, and the Bluegrass and family activities are held outside.

There is a bake sale and cake auction, so there are many ways you can help besides buying a ticket. Listed below are items are our needs. If you can provide one or more of the following items, please contact Ann Backus at [email protected].

  • One or more folks to provide a dessert or baked item for the silent auction. This can be breakfast sweet rolls, breads, or cakes and cupcakes.
  • You can volunteer to bake 1-2 dozen cookies and several folks could help with this.
  • 50 people to buy tickets. Buy your tickets HERE

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate for this coming Sunday goes to Fig Tree.

Fig Tree, sponsored by Cokesbury United Methodist Church, describes itself as “a place to be seen and known”, a gathering place for friendship and community that prioritizes Knoxville’s most vulnerable citizens, those without homes. At Fig Tree people can find showers, laundry facilities, meals, computers as well as volunteers trained to assist folks in referrals for resources and services available in the city. If you've ever wondered what you can do in addition to providing donations; consider making a Traveler Bag. A traveler bag is a small bag with a bottle of water and shelf-stable food items that you can keep with you in your car. As you encounter folks who could benefit from the services at Fig Tree, share the bag with them. There is a printable flier for Fig Tree on their website that can be included in the bag.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. Please put "Fig Tree" in the memo line.
