What's Your School's Cultural Profile?

"Culture expresses goals through values and beliefs and guides activity through shared assumptions and group norms.

Culture is the tacit social order of an organization: It shapes attitudes and behaviors in wide-ranging and durable ways. Cultural norms define what is encouraged, discour- aged, accepted, or rejected within a group. When properly aligned with personal val- ues, drives, and needs, culture can unleash tremendous amounts of energy toward a shared purpose and foster an organization’s capacity to thrive."

Use the worksheet from Harvard Business Review (HBR) to assess your school and/or your board's culture and have some conversations about the actual results and your desired results. Are they aligned?
"What's Your Organization's Cultural Profile" is one article in this comprehensive collection, "The Leader's Guide to Corporate Culture."

This collection of of 5 articles could be considered a master class in organizational culture. There are charts that outline the pros and cons of different culture styles; the worksheet to assess your school/board's culture; and suggestions on leadership succession planning that include aligning individual leadership style with desired organizational culture. This is definitely a reference worth keeping in your board's resource library.

Cultural Profile Worksheet can be found on p.11.
