Happy Sunday, Lions,

I hope each of you are doing well and that everyone is well rested with that extra hour of sleep that we received last night. I'm not sure about you, but my kids and pet missed the memo about the extra hour of sleep. So, instead of waking up an hour later, we arose an hour earlier.

I wanted to take a brief moment to point out some data from last week. The graph above represent the number of students who were tardy each day (arriving between 8:01 and 8:05). I know what many people were just thinking.

"But it's only 5 minutes."

Here is what happens during the first five minutes of every class:

  • Make that mental shift and transition to the classroom,
  • Discussion of the learning goal for the day (or class period), a review of our "I can" statements,
  • A recap of yesterday's learning (helping make the transition from yesterday's material to today's)

To quote James Lang, from the University of Florida, "The opening five minutes offer us a rich opportunity to capture the attention of students and prepare them for learning. They walk into our classes trailing all of the distractions of their complex lives — the many wonders of their video games/smartphones, the arguments with siblings/family/friends, the question of what to have for lunch. Their bodies may be stuck in a room with us for the required time period, but their minds may be somewhere else entirely. It seems clear, then, that we should start class with a deliberate effort to bring students’ focus to the subject at hand.”

Pride, let's make an effort this week to arrive 5 minutes earlier.

Have a great week, Lions!

In Strength and Blessings,

~Dr. Compton

Attention Parents: Important Attendance Info

Parents: please be reminded that our school day starts at 8am. Any student arriving at school after 8am must have an adult sign them in tardy at the kiosk in the front office. There may be some occasions where you may see faculty still linger around outside or even walk in with your student, however your student must be signed in to be counted present for the school day.

This also applies if you are returning a student back to school after an appointment. It is imperative that we have accurate attendance throughout the day, every day.

If you have any questions regarding attendance and or tardies, please contact Ms. Robinson.

A Note from Ms. Carr

Greetings,

It has been a great week. Such fun to start the week off seeing all the fun costumes and creativity. On Tuesday, I started my November lessons. Gratitude is a very important part of life and really helps to increase growth mindset. If you remember from last year, a growth mindset is when you look at everything with a positive attitude and even if you make a mistake or something doesn’t go the way you expected or desired, you find the positive so that you can grow and learn from all situations. Being thankful and grateful for every such opportunity is very important for our students to continue to learn.

Our lessons on gratitude this month are either the students creating a letter to someone thanking them for something specific or a list of things the students are thankful for with specific prompts. It has been successful this week and I am positive it will continue to be positive. \

I am very thankful for your students, you and Riverwalk. My job is often very stressful and I make my fair share of mistakes, but it is also extremely rewarding. Every day, even the days that are hard for me to get out of bed, is met with the students hugs and smiles and “Hey Mrs. Carr” and it is all worth it. I wouldn’t do anything different.

Please let me know if I can help you or your student.

Thank you again for the pleasure of serving you, your students and Riverwalk.

Hugs,

Mrs. Carr

A Note from Dr. Dempsey

Hello Pride!! We had another great week. As we are moving into the second nine weeks, policies and procedures are starting to slide a little.

Please be aware of the following expectations and please discuss these with your student:

  1. There are to be no hoods, hats or air pods/headphones worn in the building.
  2. Student cell phones are to be in their backpacks at all times in the building. If students are allowed their phones at lunch, they are to be put back in their backpacks when they return to the classroom.

We are seeing an excessive amount of cell phone usage in the classrooms and this is impacting instructional time. Please remind your students that they will receive a verbal warning the first time, and after that their phone will be confiscated and kept in the office for a parent or guardian to pick up.

We truly appreciate all your assistance and for trusting us with your students.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Christy Dempsey

A Note from Ms. Menges

Happy Sunday!

We had another great week here at Riverwalk. We started Monday with book character day, and also got to have the book fair on campus all week. I hope you all were able to get some goodies there. Please remember to reach out to me and use me as a resource if you ever have any questions or concerns regarding your student. I am here to talk with them and teach them social emotional skills that will help them in their everyday lives. I was able to get into the middle school classrooms last week and talk through healthy coping skills with those students. Please continue these conversations at home and encourage your students to implement healthy coping skills as they face their challenges. Here's what we have going on for this week...

Things to note:

-8th and 9th grade parents, I will be sending out a sign up by the end of the semester for IGP (individualized graduation plan) meetings that will start in January.

-11th and 12th graders, please check out our biweekly newsletter called "The Upperclassmen Tribune." This will give you great resources regarding college, scholarships, and careers.

Quote of the Week:

"Don't let yesterday take up too much of today."

-Will Rogers

Sincerely,

Ms. Menges

A Note from Mr. Ball

Hello PRIDE,

Progress reports went home with your students this past Wednesday. This is a time to review your students progress for this last grading period. Use this opportunity to talk with your student about their time management and study habits. Most students will see a drastic improvement in their grades with a little more work outside the classroom.

As a reminder, the York Tech Campus is closed on Tuesday, November 8, for Election Day. Our 10th - 12th grade students will not have class that day.

This Friday, November 11, the 10th - 12th grade students will meet at the Riverwalk Academy main campus. We will begin our day at 8:30 and students can be picked up at 12:00. We will have college and career lessons for all students followed by a pep rally at 11:00 to recognize our fall athletic teams.

As always, if you need any assistance please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your continued support,

Richard
