Welcome to November!
Hi neighbor,

October was a spookily busy month. It is a treat for me to inform you that two of our neighbors have recently published a book about the historic Schiele neighborhood located on the Alameda.

District 6 residents and authors, Kay Gutknecht and Krista Van Laan, have done extensive research about the Schiele neighborhood, homes, and architecture, and I had the pleasure of celebrating their accomplishments as well as the 100th anniversary of the neighborhood at their festive block party.

District 6 is full of history and I'm grateful to live here and share it with you. If you're interested in purchasing a copy of their book titled "Schiele Subdivision and Alameda Park. History, Architecture, and Preservation in a San Jose Neighborhood," please send them an email or stop by Recycle Books on the Alameda or at the Antiques Colony on San Carlos Avenue. Thank you for supporting small District 6 businesses!
Halloween in our District is always thrilling! It was fun passing out candy to our younger neighbors as they trick-or-treated along Lincoln Avenue and The Alameda this year. Bascom Library held a Boo Bash with many frighteningly fun activities and my office also hosted a Halloween party for the families at Evans Lane Interim Housing. Seeing the many homes that decorate for Halloween is entertaining. I can't wait to see your Christmas decor!
As we move into the season of thanks and giving, I'd like to give thanks to all District 6 residents for all that they do in their neighborhoods, schools, and communities to keep our District thriving. It has been a pleasure serving as your Councilmember since 2017 and I look forward to what we can accomplish together through 2024.

In this month's edition of the newsletter, you will find many free outdoor and virtual events, as well as neighborhood safety tips, and updates on local construction and LED light installations.

Please stay safe and dry this Fall.

Best,

Dev
City Council Updates
Climate Smart Updates

This October, my colleagues and I took further action on climate change. We authorized $530 million in funding for San Jose Clean Energy to scale up battery storage capacity, as well as secure new contracts for renewable energy sources. With these actions, San Jose remains on track to meet its carbon-neutral goal by 2030.
Protecting Mobile Home Parks

Also this past month, my colleagues and I took action to help protect our city’s mobile home parks. Residents in these parks face constant uncertainty as they are often targeted by developers for redevelopment. The actions that we took will move our most at-risk mobile home parks to a new land-use designation that is designed to help preserve them for the short and long-term future.

City Resources and Updates
How to Prevent Car Theft and Break-Ins

San Jose Police Department Captain Brian Spears has informed me that there is an increase in car break-ins during Daylight Savings. With longer nights and residents looking for places to hide their holiday gifts, Captain Spears advised the following to protect your car and your valuables:

  • Do NOT leave electronics in your car (laptops, cell phones, any device with a cellular, wifi, or Bluetooth connection)
  • If you do accidentally leave an electronic in your car, make sure to turn it all the way OFF. Thieves can track electronic devices through wifi and/or Bluetooth connections which is why turning off your electronic device all the way off will protect you.
  • Do NOT use your car as a hiding spot for holiday gifts.
  • Request a Neighborhood Watch meeting for your community. Police officials will inform you and your neighbors about the best security measures and how to discourage crimes in or near your homes.
  • Park your car in your garage if you have one.
Converting to LED Lights in District 6
Decorative lights around District 6 will be converted to LED lights as we close 2022.

Please see the image for light locations. More lights will be converted throughout District 6 in 2023. Stay tuned for updates.
Coyote Sightings

Many residents have called my office asking what to do when they see a coyote in their neighborhood. Below are tips on what to do if you encounter a coyote in your neighborhood or on your local trails:

  • Do NOT feed a coyote.
  • Do NOT try to capture it even if it is a pup.
  • Call the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley at 408.429.9453 if you do encounter a coyote pup.
  • Avoid direct eye contact.
  • Do NOT turn your back or run from a coyote, and leave the area calmly.
  • If followed by a coyote, make loud noises and make yourself look as big as possible.
  • Carry an air horn when you walk or hike.

To prevent a coyote problem:
  • Secure garbage cans.
  • Cut back low shrubs and vines where small rodents may hide.
  • Keep pets inside at dawn and dusk.
  • Don’t leave pet food outside as it attracts the small rodents that are its’ food source.

The WSJ MTIP is working to achieve larger City goals, such as improving traffic safety, reducing greenhouse gases, and improving access to more transportation options, such as public transit and bike share.

Attendees can learn more about the WSJ MTIP’s next steps and provide feedback on the plan at this upcoming Zoom meeting. See the agenda for the meeting and the full draft plan here.

At the conclusion of the project, the community will be able to enjoy the newly paved trail.
