ISSUE NO. 281 / December 8, 2021

Sunapee Happenings
Winter has been teasing us... one day a blizzard and we’re dreaming of a White Christmas, the next day the brilliant sunshine and warmer temperatures melt the ice and we’re surrounded by brown turf. One morning we awaken to different weather front wrapping us in thick fog (or low lying clouds?) and by afternoon the skies open up and there’s torrential rain and gusty winds of 40mph! Even the weathermen are perplexed.
Thankfully we have Peter Bloch’s incredibly beautiful “Last Paddle of 2021” amid the late season foliage of Grafton Pond, to remind us of November’s fair days.

Christmas/Holiday Open Mic and Sing-Along

Randy Miller, Jane Orzechowski and Friends

Randy Miller and Jane Orzechowski are both recipients of numerous music and arts awards including the Folk Heritage Award from the Governor and the NH State Council on the Arts. They are both icons in the world of traditional Celtic Music and Contradance.
Back in September, we brought in Hanson to play a set of old and new songs, in honor of a new career anthology called Middle of Everywhere. But, since Hanson has also just released a holiday album called Finally It's Christmas, Bob Boilen — our own right-jolly old elf — sprung on everyone the idea of taking an hour off between sets and bringing Ike, Taylor and Zac Hanson back for a wintery encore. Which means, as you'll see here, everything from frantic time-lapse set decoration to an intrusive snow machine.

“Peanuts” for the kids.
A classic “oldie”.

A Barnie Holiday Weekend
Young artists ages 6-11 and 12-18 are invited to take part in this weekend-long immersion into acting, singing, dancing, and more. Kick off this holiday season by singing and dancing to your favorite Christmas carols and holiday songs, and acting out classic holiday characters! This event is a perfect way to continue building your triple threat skills, connect with Barnie friends, and get into the holiday spirit!

All is Calm
Saturday, December 11 – Sunday, December 12
All is Calm is based on real-life events during World War I along the Western Front when soldiers from France, England, and Germany ventured into no-man’s land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Soldiers exchanged gifts, swapped prisoners, performed burials, played football, and sang Christmas carols. The unofficial truce was all-too-brief: following that period of peace, soldiers were ordered back to fight for another bloody four years.

NH Now Photo Exhibit
The exhibition at Colby-Sawyer will be on display in the Davidow Center for Art + Design during regular gallery hours Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. though Dec. 15.

winter advisories
Dock De-icers

The NH law on De-Icers reflects new technologies, increased safety and access for property owners. Time/temperature controllers are easy to install and circulators or agitators should be mounted vertically. Double check to make sure your de-icer is up to code, safe and protecting both your property and your environment.

Winter Salt

For decades there have been reports on the issues of salting our roads during the winter months. Road salt is used liberally on icy or snowy roads and sidewalks all winter long. Yet the data shows that salt is a threat to fish and wildlife as well as human health. Salt leaches through the top soil and into the groundwater and water systems as it dissolves. Runoff from roadways, driveways and sidewalks carry salt into our waterways. Salt after it dissolves into our fresh water systems cannot be removed easily and poses a serious hazard to the environment.
