Message from Lelia True, Interim Head of School
Last week I was excited to see our new "Welcome and Welcome Back" banner go up. We are saying a warm "welcome back" to the families that worked so hard with us last year to provide the children with a safe and meaningful school year. We are also thrilled to give a special "welcome" to the 80 new students and their families who are joining us for their first year at WWS.

Our campus is bustling with the entire staff in the building, getting ready for our students' arrival. This week soccer practices started, the classrooms and campus are being prepared, schedules are being completed, and learning materials are in place. We are ready for another school year.  While we are not back to “normal,” we are planning on a year of moreMore time on campus, in the classroom, on trips, and playing games. Yes, there will be plenty of COVID-19 protocols - testing, distancing, health checks, masking, learning outdoors, filters, sanitizers, and pods will all continue to be part of our day. With these and other actions we are protecting each other and enabling activities that support our students and families. So, it is with a feeling of joy that I welcome and welcome back the community to the new school year.

Faculty Work Week
This week is a busy time at the school. Monday was the orientation for new employees (there are many this year - look for an introductory email later this week!). The rest of the week is dedicated to preparation for the school year in many facets. Along with all of the logistics and practical tasks, our "work week" always includes time for movement and artistic exploration as well as an in-depth group study.

This year, the group study is rooted in an excerpt from The Art of Goethean Conversation by Marjorie Spock. In our discussions we are considering the depth of our conversations, how we set our inner voice aside to truly listen and respond to others, and what space we make for meaning in our interactions.
Alumni News
We love to hear from our alumni and alumni families! The following updates were shared with us recently. Do you have alumni news to share? Email: alumni@washingtonwaldorf.org
Morgan Kulesza ('12) is the Program Manager for the Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program, a therapeutic arts program for patients, caregivers, and staff members at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Morgan received her BA from Rhodes College and MA from Georgetown University.

Aside from her other responsibilities, Morgan is sometimes called-on at the spur of the moment to create a sketch of a baby that is undergoing critical treatment at Georgetown University Hospital. Since cameras are not allowed on the floor, a portrait can be most meaningful for the family. She also sketches babies undergoing cancer treatment.

One of Morgan's drawings was recently published in the book 'Purpose-built' Art in Hospitals: Art with Intent by Judy Rollins.
Camilla Feeley (alum) (pictured on the left) made history this summer as part of the first ever qualified full team from the USA to compete in Rhythmic Gymnastics in the Olympics. The team finished eleventh in the group all-around qualification. In 2019, Camilla won a total of four medals at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru.
Celia Braun ('21) is a freshman at Boston University and plays on their women's soccer team. At the end of the first week of the season, Celia was named the Rookie of the Week for the Patriot League.

From the announcement:
Rookie of the Week
Celia Braun, Boston University, Fr., GK, Bethesda, Md./Washington Waldorf School
  • Braun started in the opener at Northeastern and made four saves to help BU earn the 2-0 win.
  • The freshman faced seven shots in goal in 45 minutes of action.
WWS Gear Shop
Last year, at parents' suggestion, a group of parents founded the WWS Gear Shop, to help defray costs of outdoor gear for families, reduce our environmental impact, and contribute to WWS's OneFund. Families donate used children's outerwear items for resale to other WWS families at reduced prices, with proceeds donated to OneFund.

Inventory Available for Online Purchase!
Gear Donations are still being accepted!

The inventory is still fairly small, and we need more! As you sort through your gear for the upcoming winter season, please save any used (and in reusable condition) outerwear and boots that you'd like to donate to the Gear Shop. Boxes will be out front to gather donations at the school during the first full week of school, September 13-17.

Here's what we're collecting (and ONLY these items, please!):
  • Outerwear
  • Outer layer snow/rain jackets and pants
  • Hats and snow/rain mittens and gloves
  • Boots (rain/snow/hiking)
  • Sizes CG through Grade 8; no adult-sized items please

Thank you for contributing to this effort!
