Young People ages 16-24, Apply for
Summer Jobs and Internships through the
Hire Houston Youth Program by April 8th
Mayor Sylvester Turner's signature jobs program for young people, Hire Houston Youth, provides paid summer jobs and internships to people aged 16 – 24, at the City of Houston and in other public, private, and philanthropic sectors. The application period had been extended until April 8.

In 2021, with the economy on the rebound from the COVID-19 public health emergency, Hire Houston Youth offered over 9,500 opportunities. This year, Mayor Sylvester Turner set a goal of offering 12,000 job and internship opportunities, with a stretch goal of 15,000.

Through Hire Houston Youth and the awarded funds, the City of Houston has an opportunity to address long-standing inequities by creating pathways from residents to resilient, living wage trajectory jobs. This initiative also aligns with the Mayor's One Safe Houston campaign that seeks to reduce violence and prevent crime, provide increased crisis intervention, engage the community and provide outreach opportunities to young people.

Mayor Turner Highlights City Investments from American Rescue Plan Act Funds
Mayor Sylvester Turner's deployment of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) economic stimulus plan funds enabled Houston to recover from revenue loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ARPA funds prevented significant budgetary cuts and employee layoffs in the City of Houston. ARPA funding was used to give firefighters an 18 percent pay increase over the next three years. This funding was also used to bolster public safety through the One Safe Houston Initiative by investing in personnel, programs, and technology in the Houston Police Department.

Mayor Sylvester Turner Releases 2 Year Update
for Resilient Houston and the Climate Action Plan
The City of Houston has released a two-year, combined update and a new digital interface to track progress on the ongoing initiatives outlined in both the Resilient Houston strategy and the Climate Action Plan.

“I am proud to report on the progress of our last two years for both resilience and sustainability. We have taken strides, despite the challenges and
roadblocks that Houstonians have faced. It is yet another demonstration of our resilience as a city,” said Mayor Turner. “With 3 out of 18 targets completed in Resilient Houston and 3 out of 12 targets completed for the
Climate Action Plan, I have no doubt that we are positioning Houston as a leader in resilience and demonstrating our commitment to build forward and build better”.

Built on existing efforts, the plans recommend new programs, projects, and policies that will help Houston prepare, adapt, and recover from shocks and stresses—like the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme weather, systemic inequities, and more. The plans outline specific actions for the City, partners, and communities to come together and solve our city and region’s challenges together, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable populations.
For more questions on the two-year report or to take part in the implementation of
both plans, please contact the Mayor’s Office of Resilience and Sustainability at mayor@houstontx.gov or call 713-837-0311.

Contribute Found Items to The Dreamcatcher
Sculpture that will be Featured at the New
Sunnyside Multiservice Center
Jesse Lott, a Houston-renowned artist, long-time Fifth Ward resident, and recently named Texas State three-dimensional artist, will create The Dreamcatcher, a sculpture to be installed on the exterior of the new Sunnyside Multiservice Center. The community will have a hand in deciding key elements of this work.

"The voices of local residents will help guide the central imagery of the sculpture—whether it's a sun, a family, or another element that encompasses the spirit of Sunnyside," said Lott. "The community will also be engaged with source materials that are authentic to the neighborhood for incorporation into The Dreamcatcher."

To hear Lott explain his vision, watch the meeting recording at bit.ly/SSCC21722

We need your feedback and found items to help create this sculpture. Submit your suggestions on the Create the Dream Catcher Google Form.
