|
JOIN US FOR MASS THIS WEEKEND
|
|
Saturday at 5:00pm
Sunday at 9:00am

PRACTICE OF CHARITY
Overconsumption harms us. other people, and the environment. Do you consume too much food or spend too much time using social media or watching television? Cut down on your intake this week.
- Spend time instead praying for those who go without enough food, water, or adequate housing.
- How aware are you of the needs of the members of your faith community? Consider ways you can support one or two people. Maybe visit and pray with someone.
- Look for ways to reduce your use of the earth's resources and to protect those resources. Recycle what you can. Use reusable grocery bags. Switch to biodegradable products that are less toxic to the environment and to you and your family.
Please continue to self-screen. Stay home if you are not feeling well and celebrate Mass with us via livestream. We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

REFLECTIONS ON CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME
|
|
On the surface, Styrofoam appears to be completely innocuous. It is durable, which makes it invaluable for packaging fragile items. It retains heat well without becoming excessively hot, making it perfect as containers for hot beverages such as coffee and tea, as well as for take-out foods. Despite its durability and strength, it is also fragile, so that it breaks down readily.
In reality, Styrofoam, which is made of polystyrene, is one of the most harmful substances made. Its manufacturing process emits harmful or undesirable substances into the environment. And while Styrofoam does indeed break down easily, this is a source of concern rather than an advantage. Styrofoam degrades by weathering rather than decomposing or biodegrading; that is, it merely breaks down into smaller pieces and particles. It is estimated that it may take 500 years for a piece of Styrofoam to completely degrade.
In the meantime, Styrofoam poses a significant threat to our environment. Whether through exposure to heat or through the normal process of degrading, Styrofoam leaches the chemical compounds used in its manufacture into the environment. Chief among these is styrene, which the National Institute of Health classifies as a neurotoxin and, for humans, a possible carcinogen. Even when it does not leach toxic compounds into the environment, small particles of Styrofoam can have a disastrous and often fatal impact on the respiratory and digestive systems of wildlife, and particularly maritime life. The problem is magnified because Styrofoam degrades so slowly: each discarded piece of Styrofoam contributes to an expanding dynamic of environmental degradation.
A biannual Styrofoam collection event
Because recycling Styrofoam requires specialized and costly equipment, commercial waste management services do not accept Styrofoam for recycling; it must be thrown in the trash. It has been estimated that 30% of landfills consist of discarded Styrofoam. However, starting in April 2022, St. John Vianney began holding a biannual Styrofoam collection event. We collect clean Styrofoam and transport it to a center capable of recycling it. So rather than throwing your Styrofoam into the garbage, you can now store it for up to six months and then bring it to the church’s recycling event.
The next Styrofoam collection event will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022, from 9 AM to 1 PM in the church parking lot. Please bring your clean Styrofoam to be recycled. And please remember to save all your Styrofoam for the following recycling event next spring!

PARISH GALA DINNER & AUCTION
In His Majesty's Service
A Night of Bidding and Bonding
Saturday, November 5, 2022
|
|
The auction will be here before you know it! Save the date to be a guest or to work the event. Mass will start at 4:00pm with the gala directly after. We need everyone to procure something!
Please keep an eye out for interesting items for the auction. Do you own a home or a timeshare? Do you earn gift miles on Southwest? Please share it with our auction. Remember, while the theme is “In His Majesty’s Service” and delightfully James Bond (who as you know went to all sorts of exotic and fun locations), the key to getting a good auction item is to think “if I want this, someone else might too” and buy two of something or if you are working with an agent or cruise company or hotel for a vacation – ask them to donate! Lots of times, companies will donate one if you buy one – game of golf in Pebble Beach or a parasailing adventure while you are in Hawaii…? Whatever fun you are having don’t forget to livestream our Masses and think about our auction!
We are looking to fill our auction committees and are in particular need of the following:
- Kitchen and general clean up help
- Night of auction -- dishwashing during auction and clean up to get in shape for Sunday Masses
- Day after auction – final clean up
- Live auction support – runners and spotters, bankers, servers – ALL DURING AUCTION
- Decorations –
- coordinator and worker bees
- Procurement – mailing letters already written to businesses and stopping by business to follow up.
Email avandewark@sjvkirkland.org to sign up for any of the volunteer positions, or if you’d like to help but don’t know how. There are so many ways to be part of the auction, and we can help you find a way to best utilize your gifts. Questions – call the parish office or email Ann.
