WHAT ARE INCOTERMS®?
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Incoterms® 2020 rules are used in contracts to clearly communicate the obligations, costs, and risks associated with the transportation and delivery of goods that cross borders as part of any shipment, providing clarity for Sellers and Buyers around obligations related to shipping during international business transactions.
THE WORKSHOP
The third workshop in the Exporting 2022 Workshop Series is on Incoterms®. This workshop will help Canadian wood product manufacturers shipping products internationally to understand Incoterms® as well as how to negotiate & incorporate them into contracts & shipping agreements, to reduce risk and lower costs when transporting these goods across borders. The session will incorporate the following topics:
- The current 2020 Terms and associated Articles & how to use them
- How Incoterms® fit (or don’t fit) international shipping formats for wood products
- Important considerations when using specific terms related to loading, import, export & insurance
- How to incorporate the Incoterms® into contracts & common contractual elements
- How to avoid risk & negotiate terms that help control costs & reduce exposure to liability

Kiln Drying Seminar

The UBC Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) will be hosting a 5-day Kiln Drying Seminar. This is a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to drying technology taught from a practical, real-life perspective and backed with solid explanations into the scientific background of drying.
This highly-regarded workshop discusses the key processes and concepts involved in drying wood. Beginning with wood properties and moisture movement, students become familiar with kiln design considerations, drying schedules and kiln loading considerations. Other topics include drying with air, drying degrade, lumber storage and handling, control systems and power plants.

WMC Management Skills Training Program

WMC Management Skills Training provides on-line learning modules specifically developed for business managers and owners of value-added wood products companies. These custom-developed modules include numerous case studies and industry examples and are designed to upgrade the managerial skills of existing managers, entrepreneurs, supervisors and management-track employees.
These are not academic courses and the skills learned can be applied immediately to the work place. Each part time course is led by a tutor with extensive industry experience.

The Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in collaboration with the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is pleased to announce the British Columbia Timber Building and Technical Tour to showcase leading manufacturers of mass-timber building components, prefabricated energy efficient homes, and modular building systems fabricators.
The UBC CAWP has been leading tours to Europe for over 15 years. This tour is an opportunity for participants to visit some of BC’s leading mass-timber building component and prefabricated building systems manufacturers, many of whom have attended our past tours to Europe and have adopted and implemented principles and technologies into their manufacturing practices.
These companies provide building solutions to meet the sustainability and green building requirements of advanced energy efficient materials, and mass-timber products for single family, multi-family, and non-residential construction.

UBC Industrial Wood Finishing Certificate Course

Part-time online training program with a one-week hands-on practical session. North America’s most comprehensive wood finishing certificate program.
The certificate program provides participants with a broad understanding of the field of wood finishing. It's designed for individuals who have some general experience in wood finishing and would like to expand their knowledge.
Once completed, participants will have knowledge and experience to do the following:
- Understand why finish is applied to wood and how wood properties affect finishing
- To be able to identify the best finishing system based on the end us
- Trouble-shoot wood finishing problems
- Design a safe and efficient finishing facility
This course will provide you with the knowledge and tools to start a finishing business or to improve an existing one.

Lots Going On: US Market Events and Activities Scheduled for Fall 2022

After a long two plus years, it was nice to return to Whistler and see all the fabulous folks in-person at this years GBM, WoodTALKS and Building Connections events. The energy at the events and on the show floor was excellent and people seemed genuinely happy to be meeting face to face. Thanks to BC Wood members and Buyers from across the globe for once again supporting this years event.
As we move into the fall, the US market development program has a number of high-quality activities that will help connect you with buyers and decision makers and lead to increased sales opportunities.
In Late October, BC Wood and member companies will participate in the Bond Custom Home event in San Diego. The Bond event directly connects manufacturers with builders and architects from across the Western United States who focus on the high-end custom home and resort home sector.
Immediately following Bond, we will once again return to San Diego to participate in the Multi Family ProCONNECT event. Like Bond, this event consists of direct meetings with key buyers and influencers, but with a focus on the growing multi-family sector in the United States. At ProCONNECT, BC Industry will meet with builders, developers, and owners of multi-family and light commercial construction projects from across North America.

Export Advisory Service

BC Wood is proud to launch a new advanced exporting program focused on helping BC wood product companies that have completed the Export Readiness Training Program, or are already exporting outside of Canada. All services are performed remotely and virtually at times that best suit the company’s availability and only require a time commitment ranging from 1-4 hours, depending on the service.
Introductory Exporting Advisory Service:
Even having completed a comprehensive export training program, many companies still experience challenges with finding critical market research, completing an Export Plan, or negotiating initial shipping contracts with new customers.
As part of the introductory service, our trainer Greg Henderson from Exportspark will engage with company executives or owners to review issues, questions, or draft Export Plans and provide recommendations. The services will consist of a short review of the company’s product, an initial call to review what is required, with a second call to review final recommendations or suggestions.
Advanced Exporting Advisory Service:
Even for companies that are export ready or currently exporting to the US, it is still vital to create a solid strategy and an action plan for entry into any new market. For BC Wood members planning on meeting with buyers from these new markets at upcoming events, simply having something to sell won’t be enough for success.
Exportspark will work together with company executives or owners to review the company’s marketing & product, validate best fit markets, develop a strategic plan for market entry along with an HR plan and review best practices around meeting with specific buyers at upcoming BC Wood events.
These services are highly cost-shared by our government funders and there is great value and effective guidance for those following up with potential clients recently met at the GBM!

“Round is the new square,” said owner Dave Byers, whose company also makes round cedar hot tubs, barrel saunas, cedar yurts as well as sleeping barrels. “I love everything round, bent or curved.”
After nearly 50 years of building residential and commercial, we refuse to offer something that will not stand up to our winters. To us, it is truly one-of-a-kind items that you will simply not see anywhere else. Of course, we also do ordinary (with the same attention to detail as our custom work), we can pretty much handle any project and have a great team of talented and dedicated craftsmen.
Dave Byers moved to the Parksville area with his wife, Shirley, in October of 2015, after his 34,000 sq. ft. woodworking shop in Belleisle Creek, NB, collapsed after 5 nor-easter snowstorms, which resulted in a total accumulation of 17-feet of heavy, wet snow earlier that year. The couple lost nearly everything so they sold what was left and moved west with some hand tools, a good sense of humour, and a dream to re-establish his business on beautiful Vancouver Island. Re-establish they did. Stop by the showroom at 3518 Brittain Blvd in Whiskey Creek for an amazing tour.

Third Intake Open for Mass Timber Construction Funding

As Mass Timber Demonstration Program (MTDP) projects from Vancouver to Castlegar prepare to break ground, businesses, local governments and First Nations can apply to the program's third intake and choose to build with mass timber in B.C. communities.
The Government of B.C. is investing $2 million into the third intake of the MTDP, building on $5.4 million already invested to support 12 mass timber building projects and four research projects from the first two intakes.
“Mass timber helps reduce our carbon footprint, adds value to our forestry sector and provides new opportunities for jobs, growth and innovation in every corner of the province,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “As we gather this week at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, we are excited about the opportunity for more communities to look to mass timber for their building needs as we continue growing an inclusive, sustainable, clean economy that works for all British Columbians.”

San Group Announces Expansion of San Forest Products and Acorn Sawmill

Langley, British Columbia – The San Group announced it is expanding the company’s flagship value added division, San Forest Products in Port Alberni and the newly acquired Acorn Sawmill in Delta, BC. The $23 million dollar investment will help develop new markets with a focus on high quality shelving products for big box stores such as Ikea. The expansion process expects to break ground in Q4 and extend to 2023.
The San Forest Products value-added expansion will focus on installing an Anthem Line, a fully automized system designed to develop edge glued panels extending to eight feet. Anthem line’s advanced manufacturing process not only helps improve San Group’s product portfolio, but also increases the company’s push to create downstream high value products for global export.

Adera launches two mass timber projects in Vancouver

Adera Development Corporation announced it is bringing two mass timber residential developments to the Vancouver market, with construction set to begin this fall. Pura, a 248-unit townhouse and condo project will be the first to get underway in late September, followed by Sol in October, a 201-unit residential development featuring a mix of condo and rental units.

Skate Boarding Meets Contemporary Art in Out of Control

French artist Raphaël Zarka, who has published three books on the history of skateboarding and who’s best known for his sculptures, drawings, paintings, and videos, created Paving Space—Regular Score, W9M1 (2022) for Out of Control.
He constructed the nine-module sculptural group out of locally sourced Douglas fir with the help of Van Urban Timber. The latter is a Squamish-based sawmill and wood-products manufacturer founded and run by a group of friends who are all skateboarders.

UBC Engineering Students’ Aircraft Model Features BC Wood in International Competition

Each year, international competitors gather at the SAE Aero Design Competition in the US, to pit their fixed-wing, electrical-powered, remote-controlled aircraft against each other in specific design challenges.
Built for the 2022 Regular Class design challenge, UBC AeroDesign’s model features balsa and BC-grown Sitka spruce in its fixed wing.

Testing the Safety of Hybrid Buildings

Civil Engineering Assistant Professor Dr. Ramla Qureshi is exploring how hybrid wood-steel buildings withstand hazards including fire and earthquakes. If her research demonstrates the buildings are reliable, she believes it could lead to more hybrid buildings being constructed.
