Fall in Love with Reading Challenge

“Fall in Love with Reading”. During the month of November (November 1st- December 2nd) students are encouraged to read as many books as they can, with a goal being 10 points per student. Students receive points for finishing a book or for reading 25 pages out of one book. The week of November 28th, we will have a spirit week to promote the final week of Fall into Reading. The themes are:

Monday November 28th- Hats on for Reading (Wear your favorite hat)

Tuesday November 29th- Reading is Groovy (dress like the 70s)

Wednesday November 30th- Go Crazy for Reading (Crazy Hair/Crazy Socks)

Thursday December 1st- Book Character Day (dress like your favorite book character)

Friday December 2nd- Glow Crazy for Books (dress in your best neon/Glow sticks/flashlights)

Once students finish reading a book or finish 25 pages, they need to prove to their teacher that they read the book. They can do this by doing a summary, a journal entry, a Raz-Kids assessment, etc. After completion they can color in a leaf on their November tracker. Students should keep these trackers for the entire month and turn them in at the end of the month. Students may even have more than 1 tracker! Each leaf colored in will be 1 point for that student and that class. Mrs. Kreischer/a member of the 3-5 student leadership team will come around once a week and record the number of leaves your class has colored in. Leaves and updated points will be displayed in the DLA Way. The class with the most points by December 2nd will receive a doughnut party for their class as well as the top point earners in each house team earning a self-selected book bundle.

Good luck and start reading!

Each month we celebrate students accomplishments in making perfect attendance, exhibiting our 7 Leader Habits, earning dojo points and also Thunder bucks as a class! See the winners!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

It’s hard to believe it is November already. At DLA we continue to work towards our school priorities.

Proficiency and Beyond

Every two weeks students in 3rd-8th grade take bi-weekly assessments in reading and math to assess their mastery of standards taught.  Additionally, students take exams at the end of each quarter. Since the tests are taken online, students see their results immediately and are very proud to share when they scored 100%. Be sure to ask your child how they did on their biweekly assessment.

Invest in Teachers

Every Friday DLA teachers gather for professional development from 3:30-4:30. Teachers participate in workshops, examine assessment data, and create re-teach plans. Having time to collaborate with colleagues improves teachers’ effectiveness.

Engage with Families

We know that families are the number one influence on students and are important partners. This is why we plan family engagement events each month. In October we had 93% attendance at 1st quarter conferences and hosted the fall festival.  In

November we are hosting our annual Longest Table event and are organizing a food drive to create Thanksgiving baskets

School Culture of Joy and Leadership

Each month we are teaching one of the seven leader habits as we implement the Leader in Me framework. To date, students have learned to be proactive, begin with the end in mind, and put first things first. Daily we recognize a student leader on the announcements and teachers acknowledge students who demonstrate the leader habits with Dojo points, stickers, and certificates.

Sincerely,
