SETTLED SEARCH TEAM UPDATE

Greetings from your Search Team! At our meeting this week we talked a lot about the service we will be leading on the 11th of September, the theme of which will be “Together on the Search”. The word “together” in that phrase has at least two meanings. As members of the Search Team, we are of course together in our task of finding our next settled minister. Though we are assigned this task, we cannot complete it unless the congregation joins us and works with us. FELLOWSHIP HOUR
Join us at 11:30 (or immediately following the service) for an in-person fellowship with coffee, beverages, treats, and good conversation on UUCUC's South Lawn.
As of Thursday, September 1, 2022, the COVID-19 transmission level in Champaign County is HIGH. That means masks will be required in UUCUC's building for all activities until the transmission level drops to Medium or Low. When In-Person Fellowship Hour is scheduled, it will also be moved outside as the weather permits. Disposable masks for children and adults are available at UUCUC, but we encourage you to bring your own masks to wear. Please visit this link for UUCUC's current COVID Safety Guidelines.

Please consider donating to the Little Free Pantries run by Julie Laut (Urbana) and AJ Herzog (Champaign), which they have maintained year-round since March 2020. Their Amazon wish list has been updated to include unique summer items. The wishlist can be sorted to identify high priority items. All orders sent through Amazon are delivered to Julie's house and split between the two pantries. You are also welcome to drop off items in person at both locations. Questions? JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, August 28, 2022.

From Anonymous: Joy for having M.R. leading the choir.

From Lara Breeze Troyer: Joy for Kelly Halcom. I can't imagine doing church work without you.

From Marsha Clinard: I joined the University of Illinois Oratorio Society in 1976 when my youngest son was 7 years old. Last week his daughter, my granddaughter, Kayley, who is taking a gap year after graduating in May from Notre Dame, joined me to sing this year in a group. I am so very happy that after 46 years in the group I am sitting beside my granddaughter singing.

From Nancy Dietrich: Nancy Dietrich is providing flowers today in honor of her and Russ Rybicki's 25th anniversary on August 30th. Also in honors of Nancy's father David Dietrich, whose birthday is today (August 28th). David passed away in 2009.

From Phillip Eichelberger: I am grateful to have the opportunity to share both joy AND concerns today. My concern: I have a recent diagnosis of cancer. I chose to remain optimistic about my upcoming treatments to eradicate the cancer. Soon, I will begin both radiation and chemotherapy treatments. My joy is that I have at least some supportive people in my life. Some with my diagnosis, unfortunately have no one. I am blessed. Please keep me in your prayers, and thank you for letting me share.

From David Gross: 57 years ago, Claudia and I arrived in Champaign/Urbana, not yet knowing that we would together find here four graduate degrees, a church, careers, raise two sons, and retire here. This church has been the cornerstone of it all.

From Kelly Halcom: Joy for Lara Breeze- Troyer on our last Hospitality co-lead day. You're the best partner in crime. Love you, friend.

From Chris Hannauer: For the generosity of this congregation and for the tireless word of Avalon Ruby and Steve Troyer to bring us the AV enhancements we are enjoying today.

From Barbara Hudgings: This Tuesday, 23rd, my oldest granddaughter, Jade, will turn 18. She will leave for college (Rensselar Polytech Institute) that same day.

From Jenny Hunt: Struggles that my mother Shirley continues to have since her June stroke

From Ellen Jacobsen: Meeting with cousins not seen for years at Starved Rock and seeing migrating birds at Kaufman Lake and having beautiful weather and a planned trip to American Player Theater in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Aldo Leopold's Shack!!

From Marilyn Ryan: Prayers and good energy for my brother, Bob, as he faces a difficult transition.
Please send your joys or sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org any time before the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service. They will be read aloud.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

SOCIAL ACTION OFFERING FOR SEPTEMBER 2022
Uniting Pride was founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to advocate for the equality, wellness, and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in Champaign County. UP exists to create a community where all who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities can live full, healthy, and vibrant lives.

We have a few main areas of year-round work:
  • Support and Social Groups
  • Our support and social groups that serve everyone from our littlest littles up through our elders.
  • Training and Education
  • We offer free LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency training for anyone willing to have us. From schools to healthcare to private businesses to faith groups to community groups and more.
  • Advocacy
  • An area of growth for us is around Advocacy. Any organization like ours always works to put ourselves out of business. Our goal is that someday there’s no more need because the world is affirming and safe for everyone. Sadly, things are going the opposite direction. 2021 was the worst year in US history with the most anti-LGBTQ+ legislation ever passed and 2022 is on track to shatter that record. So we have formed an Advocacy committee to address this growing need.
  • Programming
  • And lastly, what we’re known best for: our events and programs. We produce the annual Pride Fest in the fall with our signature parade and fair and lots of other community programming. But we’ve also added a lot more this past year, from social to educational to adult to youth & family. We’re striving to create more safe and affirming socialization and community.

We need your help!

Of course, all of this takes resources to do. Uniting Pride is on an aggressive growth plan, again sadly, due to increased need. We’ve reached our max capacity based on the staff, funding, and resources we currently have, and yet there is so much more we could do if we had what we needed to do it. So if you’re lucky enough to be in a position to give, we thank you for helping us.

And we hope to see you at this year’s Pride Fest Sept 24th to Oct 2nd. Check out our website for information on the incredible week of programming we’re offering this year: unitingpride.org.
During the month of July, our shared offering was able to raise $1,755.38 that was donated to The Brennan Center for Justice.

The Brennan Center for Justice is working to create a USA that is democratic, just, and free. Today we are in a great fight for the future of democracy in our country.
