Happy New Year, Caregivers!

Dear Caregivers,

Best wishes to you and welcome to a new year. We have so much to celebrate and be thankful for and at the top of our list are wonderful caregivers just like you. On behalf of all of us at Clark County Family Services (CCFS) we’re looking forward to continuing to work with you to support our valley’s children and their families.

Did you know that January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month? The theme for this month emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to preventing human trafficking. This includes recognizing the intersections of human trafficking with other forms of violence and social issues.

Specifically in child welfare, CCFS plays a role in responding to and preventing the commercial sexual exploitation of children. Sex trafficking of a minor is child abuse, and all suspected cases must be reported to the Clark County Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline. That number is 702-399-0081.

Here are just a few reasons why the month of January is so important:

  • Human trafficking is a public health issue and crime that exploits the most vulnerable among us and weakens the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities across generations.
  • This month sheds light on the fact that human trafficking can be prevented by increasing societal understanding, reducing social inequities, and addressing the conditions that contribute to exploitation.
  • Public awareness about human trafficking and how it can happen to anyone often contributes to an increase in donations. Since January provides information about the disturbing realities of human trafficking, the community is often moved to make donations to the right organizations dedicated to helping survivors on their road to recovery.

Human trafficking disproportionately impacts certain populations including people affected by abuse, violence, poverty, unstable living situations, social disconnection, or discrimination. This is a time for all of us to educate ourselves about human trafficking and learn how to spot the signs, threats and behaviors related to it.

The National Human Trafficking website is an important resource to report a tip or ask for help.

Let’s continue to strive to do everything we can to ensure that our children in care receive all the services they need to meet their mental health, physical health, and educational needs.

Thank you for everything that you do for our families every day. We’re incredibly grateful to you.

Sincerely,

Lisa Martinez

Next time you come into Hannah’s Closet, bring your placement letter and/or adoption decree and we’ll take it from there.

For this location, you MUST HAVE an appointment in order to shop. We DO NOT allow same day shopping or walk-ins. An appointment must be made at this link: https://app.vomo.org/opportunity/need-hannahs-closet at least 24 hours in advance.

Please also note that the caregivers must be the ones to show up and shop for their children. We do not allow Caseworkers, CASAs, etc. to shop. We implement this so that we can connect with families and try to plug them into community with other families and resources.

It can be confusing because Hannah’s Closet NORTH and SOUTH share the same name but have different rules in regards to shopping because we are run by two completely different organizations. We do apologize for that confusion, but are not in a position to change it at this point.

This Review/Feedback Collection System has been designed by Foster Change and responses will be collected by Foster Change. Responses will be shared with the Clark County Department of Family Services, in order to elevate the voices of licensed caregivers in Clark County, including post-permanency families.

GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK

Every family needs support sometimes and that is okay. Seeking support creates and sustains positive well-being for our youth, families, and ourselves. Raise the Future provide a range of services designed to meet your varying needs.

Over-Responding

TBRI TIP OF THE MONTH:

Danger of Over-Responding

When parents over-respond to children, it can easily heighten the situation at hand. Children can go further into dysregulation, and conflict can take over. As a caregiver, it is important to learn healthy response styles, and that often means learning to identify your own triggers.

Important Educations Updates January 2025

Hi Everyone. Happy 2025 and 2nd Semester of the 2024-2025 School Year!

Congratulations on making this far into the school year to you and your children!

It is now a new semester. For those of our kids who struggled last semester, they can start anew and with a fresh start in this one! Please encourage your children to either continue their good work in school or to start the new semester with the belief that this semester can be better than the last one!

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Wednesday, January 1st through Friday, January 3rd – No School for Students (Winter Break)
  • Monday, January 6th - Classes Resume for All Students/Second Semester Begins
  • Monday, January 20th – No School for Students (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
  • Monday January 27th – No School for Students (Staff Development Day)

To plan ahead for the 2024 school year, download the 2024-25 school calendar

Fall Semester 2024 Grades are Available to Parents Via Campus Parent

  • Please make sure to check your child’s grades last semester via Campus Parent. Instructions to access Campus Parent can be found by clicking here or by asking your child’s school to help you access Campus Parent.
  • If you are concerned about a grade or anything else on your child’s grade report, contact your child’s Education Decision Maker (EDM) if you are not your child’s EDM and your child’s teacher and/or child’s school counselor (especially at the middle and high school level) to discuss your concern and help determine how your child might be able to do better in the upcoming semester.
  • Teachers are available to meet with parents before and after school during their contract time and sometimes during their prep period. For meetings with all or a few of your child’s teachers at the middle school and high school level, contact your child’s counseling office or your child’s counselor to set up the meeting. Middle and high schools offer these meetings regularly to parents. At the meeting, if you hear your child is struggling in a class or subject, ask what support are available to help your child at school and ask the teacher what you can do to support your child in that class.
  • If your child failed a high school level class, see below to determine if your child can get some credit for the class.

If Your Child Failed Any High School Level Class, Please Check with Your Child’s Counselor to See if Your Child May Be Able to Receive Partial Credit for the Course

  • Under Nevada Law, each public school must create an academic plan for a pupil enrolled in ninth grade to progress towards meeting graduation requirements. For children in foster care, the plan must be revised and adjusted to maximize credits and partial credit may be awarded for efforts the child made in the course. Credits should also be maximized for students in foster care taking high school courses who are enrolled in middle school/junior high as well.
  • If your child failed a high school level course last semester in high school or failed a high school level course in middle school and either attended the course for a while or did some work in the course, contact your child’s counselor at the school and find out if your child can receive partial credit for the course. If you have any difficulty in working with your child’s school or counselor, contact CCSD’s Foster Care Department at 702-799-1196 or fostercaretransrequest@nv.ccsd.net.

What is the Early Childhood Programs Eligibility Portal?

The First 5 Nevada Early Childhood Programs Eligibility Portal is a tool to help parents and families identify what programs and services they may qualify for. The Portal serves as an online gateway where parents and families can check if they or their child qualify for early childhood programs, such as preschool, child care assistance, or early intervention services, among others. By entering some basic information about their child, like age, household income, and any special needs, the portal helps determine eligibility for nearly 30 different programs and provides guidance on how to apply or learn more. For urgent medical or legal consent after hours, please call 702-303-0473.

Here are examples of when you would call the after hours hotline:

What do I do in a situation involving a serious medical condition or injury? The first concern is the safety and well- being of the child. Call 911 for emergency assistance and then call the child’s Permanency Specialist. The child’s Permanency Specialist will notify the birth family. After regular hours, call the After Hours On-Call number at 702-303-0473. Call your Licensing Special to report the incident.

What do I do if I need to talk to a member of the Permanency Specialist’s team after working hours? We want to support you. Your Licensing Worker has extended work hours and the Foster Parent Champions are available till 7pm daily. If it is an emergency, then you can contact the After Hours On-Call at 702-303-0473.
