AGs IN THE NEWS
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced an individual was sentenced "to two years probation after pleading guilty to one count of Embezzlement by Agent $50,000 to $100,000, in a case of securities and elder abuse."
The Texas Office of the Attorney General "secured a $10.76 million Final Judgment and Permanent Injunction against BINT Operations LLC (“Blessings in No Time”) and its owners, LaShonda and Marlon Moore of Frisco, Texas, for the perpetration of an illegal pyramid scheme."
Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin issued a statement "after the Federal Trade Commission announced a $450,000 settlement in the 2020 lawsuit against Blessings In No Time, a Texas-based pyramid scheme, and its owners LaShonda and Marlon Moore."
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced that the "owner of a Phoenix-based Adult Care Home, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the homicide of a vulnerable adult entrusted to his care."
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced that an individual "pleaded guilty to one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor – 3rd Degree and five counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor – 1st Degree on July 25, 2023 in Newberry County before the Honorable Eugene Griffith."
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced that "a dissolved and unregistered debt management servicer in Colorado, will provide full restitution to 167 Colorado consumers after the company used deceptive marketing practices to seemingly guarantee substantial student loan forgiveness."
Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs "that 'junk fees' are becoming more pervasive in Pennsylvania and are damaging the competitive marketplace by inflating costs for borrowers, renters, travelers, and ticket buyers."
Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor "obtained a temporary restraining order against Sunil Thapa, the owner of The Himalayan, also known as Mt. McKinley Clothing Co., a tourist shop located outside of Denali National Park."
HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost provided updates on anti-human trafficking efforts by law enforcement task forces formed under his offices's Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced "that a Vandalia, Illinois man prosecuted by his office was sentenced to 30 years in prison for possessing, reproducing and disseminating child pornography and indecent solicitation of an adult."
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen announced that "eighteen individuals were arrested in Bozeman over the weekend during a human trafficking operation conducted by the Montana Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Bozeman Police Department."
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced the completion of a four-day human trafficking training for 28 law enforcement officers from across the state. Her office has trained 317 officers from across the state since launching "Be the Solution."
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced that his office’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit obtained a new indictment against an individual who "has been charged with seven counts of Trafficking of Persons for Sexual Servitude and one count of Sexual Exploitation of Children in a case that now involves the trafficking of three victims."
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody today announced that John Walsh will be the keynote speaker for the 2023 Human Trafficking Summit which "launches Tuesday, Oct. 3, and aims to bring together key stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, survivors, victim service providers and advocates to collaborate, learn and strengthen our efforts to combat this heinous crime."
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced he met with the Human Trafficking Advisory Board. The board is a "team of advisors appointed by the Attorney General and other state agencies as required by state law. Its members are tasked with developing anti-human trafficking awareness campaigns, identifying victims, prosecuting traffickers, and making legislative recommendations to the Attorney General."
CYBERSECURITY
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced "the Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit to combat illicit online activity in Florida. The Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit is a team of criminal and civil attorneys in the Florida Attorney General’s Office who work with Florida Department of Law Enforcement analysts and other law enforcement agencies to solve cybercrimes that may be overlooked by federal authorities due to the size of the case."
ORGANIZED RETAIL CRIME
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes announced agents from his CASE (Crimes Against State Economy) Strike Force "arrested two men and recovered dozens of firearms and accessories stolen from Doug’s Shoot’n Sports store in Taylorsville."
CHEVRON DEFERENCE
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey led a coalition of 27 states in an amicus brief "asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule—or at least clarify—the doctrine known as Chevron deference."
GI BILL RESTORATION ACT
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella co-led a 24 state letter calling on Congress "to support H.R. 1255, the Sgt. Isaac Woodard, Jr. and Sgt. Joseph H. Maddox GI Bill Restoration Act of 2023."
FDIC
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond led a coalition of nine attorneys general urging the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to reverse course on its proposed rule to impose a special assessment on banking organizations.
SECOND AMENDMENT
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul led a coalition of 21 attorneys general filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in Worth v. Jacobson.
Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador led a coalition of 23 attorneys general filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Barnett v. Raoul.
FCC
New York Attorney General Letitia James led a coalition of 16 attorneys general and New York City in "calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand language access for critical government alerts sent to cell phones, known as Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs)."
PFAS
A coalition of 23 states and territories filed a brief with the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina expressing opposition to a proposed class action settlement with a company related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Those joining the brief were Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
OCEAN JUSTICE STRATEGY
California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that he led a coalition of six attorneys general who filed a comment letter with the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the White House Office of Science and Technology regarding the development of a national Ocean Justice Strategy.
