Advanced Mediation

Training: Mediating Divorce 


Register for OC Human Relations' 28-Hour advance mediation training for how to mediate a divorce. This training provides mediators with the context needed to be able to help divorcing couples successfuly navigate the complex legal divorce process. Registration is restricted to individuals who have completed a basic mediation training.

Background

Family disputes often involve complex legal issues and high emotional entanglements between disputing parties. Such cases present mediators with challenges that require a wide range of skills. The goal of this course is to help mediators interested in focusing on Divorce Mediation to begin to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to successfully work with divorcing couples.

Program Objectives: 

 The training program focuses on skill development necessary to enable a divorce mediator to

  • Approach each case with the goal of helping parties develop their own solutions to issues in dispute;
  • Provide a safe environment for meaningful exchanges between the parties;
  • Assess the capabilities of the parties to advocate for their own interests;
  • Explain the court filing process and options for navigating the system.
  • Provide access to resources necessary to facilitate decision-making;
  • Address interactional roadblocks to the resolution process;
  • Assist parties with the development of a Term Sheet stating the terms they have agreed to; and
  • Recognize possible biases and adhere to mediator standards of conduct.

Content: 

 The content and objectives of this training are based on the Model Standards of Practice for Divorce and Family Mediation. In addition, the training addresses the unique needs of the Orange County DRPA program. Supplemental readings on family mediation procedures and issues are provided. Training cost includes a copy of OCHR's 200+ page Divorce Mediation Training Manual and access to case forms that can be presonalized for private practice.

Divorce Mediation Certificate:

In order to receive a certificate of completion for the Divorce Mediation Training, participants must attend all sessions of the 40-hour classroom training.

MCLE Credit for Legal Professionals:

 An application is being submitted to the State Bar of California for 26 MCLE credits. Once obtained, the credits will be available for an additional fee.

Follow-up Divorce Mediation Experience

Upon completion of the Divorce Mediation Training, mediators are elilgible to gain additional real-life mentored mediation experience by becoming a volunteer in OC Human Relations Family Mediation Program. Volunteers who contribute 120 hours of service within 6 months of completing their training are eligible to receive a $300 refund of their original training fee.
