Attendance Awareness Campaign Update

A project led by Attendance Works

August 3, 2023

Laying the Foundation

for 2023-24!

Foundational supports for the whole school have been eroded during the pandemic. Learn how educators can rebuild foundational supports and use a tiered approach to intervention to help bolster student engagement and attendance.

As the new school year begins, consider how you can help students internalize the value of showing up every day through relationships, recognition and incentives. Keep in mind, the strategy is not to award perfect attendance for a semester or the school year, since the students who struggle will soon be left out. Download a new handout on our new Incentives page!

Our next free AAC Webinar (#3) is: A Welcoming and Healthy Return to School: Ensuring Showing Up, on Wednesday, August 9 12pm-1:30pm PT / 3pm–4:30pm ET. Register for this and the 4th webinar, and check out the recordings of those you missed!

Sign up for our three-part, online PD for educators. Attendance Works team members will show you how to implement strategies, support students and mobilize community partners to engage students (and their families) that are missing school. Register as part of a team

Attendance Tools

To help kick off Attendance Awareness Month and a school year focused on boosting attendance and engagement, schools and districts can host special events and reach out to the media. Our 2023 Count Us In! toolkit has new pages with resources for both actions!

Download and post our new posters with the 2023 slogan, Showing Up Together! And don’t forget to view the updated Key Messages about attendance for 2023-24 school year.

Parents are a child’s first teacher, but many families don’t have the time or access to resources to encourage early learning. United Way’s Born Learning equips parents, caregivers and communities with the tools they need to create early learning opportunities.

Anxiety is a serious struggle for many students that can prevent them from engaging at school. Our handout offers brief information on the signs of anxiety and what families can do to support their child. Download it on this page.

City Leaders Spotlight

Reducing chronic absenteeism requires the engagement of the entire community. We've partnered with the League of Cities on its new website page with resources and guidance for city leaders. Check out the interview with Hedy!

Events

The Western Educational Equity Assistance Center (WEEAC) at WestEd invites you to the next three installments of Equity-Driven Strategies for Addressing Chronic Absence webinar series. On September 12, participate in session 4: Increasing Attendance and Engagement for American Indian and Alaska Native Students. Register for all 3.
