A Message from Coach Gary

To all NCF members and families—thank you. Your continued support and involvement mean everything to us. You've probably noticed the changes we’ve been making around the club. We’re working to make the space more welcoming, more functional, and better suited to the needs of our fencers. Behind the scenes, we’re also reviewing our programs and goals—making sure we’re doing right by the students we have now, and setting things up for the ones still to come.

It’s been great to see new junior fencers—and a few new adults—joining us lately. That kind of energy keeps us motivated to keep improving and offering solid fencing education and a good experience for everyone.

Here are a few updates:

NCF Team Gear is now available on Squad Locker. Warm-ups, t-shirts, hoodies—gear you can wear while traveling, training, or collecting medals. There’s a 15% discount through April 14, so if you’ve been meaning to order, now’s a good time.

There has been an update to the NCF Boulder membership and traing fees. Please talk with me if you have any questions.

Lost & Found is overflowing. If you’re missing a jacket, water bottle, glove—check the bin.

Summer Fencing Camps for novice and beginning fencers are open. These are half-day camps, focused on skill-building and learning the sport. Early sign-up discounts are available.

We’re growing our Parent and Supporter Group. We know this is our business, but it’s your kids’ club—and your help, input, and presence really do make a difference. Thanks to those who’ve already jumped in.

There’s a competition round-up in this newsletter with recent results, upcoming events, and ways to support our fencers at tournaments.

We’ve included a long-overdue explanation of thefencingtrainer.com—what it is, how it works, and how it fits into the broader training philosophy at NCF. If you’ve ever wondered about it, this should help clear things up.

We’ve added Office Hours to the club schedule to make it easier for parents to catch us. If you’d like to talk about equipment, training, travel, or anything else, this is a good time to check in. You can always email, but sometimes a face-to-face is easier.

The photo wall’s been getting updated regularly—take a look next time you’re in. And if you see someone new around the club, say hello. That kind of simple gesture helps keep the club friendly and connected.

We care about results—we train to win. But we also care about how we get there. Our goal is to build thoughtful, respectful athletes who understand what they’re doing, not just follow directions. We want our students to think, ask questions, and take ownership of their progress. That’s what makes better fencers in the long run.

We’d like to take a moment to recognize Coach Scott Permer for his long-standing contribution to NCF. Scott has been with us for 18 years, and he consistently brings depth of experience, thoughtful insight, and a steady presence to his coaching.

His approach is measured and attentive, and he has a keen eye for detail—something our athletes benefit from every day. We’re fortunate to have him as part of the coaching team.

If you haven’t had a chance to meet him yet, we encourage you to introduce yourself when the opportunity arises.

There are a few more topics in this newsletter we didn’t mention here, so take a moment to read through it. And if you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

– Coach Gary

Lost, Found & Forgotten Items

Please take a moment to check the water bottle storage are and coat rack for any personal belongings.

Any unclaimed items will be held for the next month. After that period, they will be disposed of.

Locker Room Clean-Up

Over the next month the locker rooms will be freshened up. The girls locker room has been completed,

When this has happened lockers will be available to rent.

cost will be $25 per month/$275 per year. Use your own lock.

To make space for all fencers in the locker rooms, please leave your rollbags at home, bring in what you need and keep in one of the shared shelves, the hanging racks or in a smaller bag.

A part of our ongoing effort to keep the locker rooms fresh and organized, we are introducing hanging racks in each locker room. These racks are for storing and airing out personal equipment and borrowed club gear for personal use.

Equipment Reapirs

If you break something—club gear or your own—here’s what to do:

  1. Grab a red repair tag from the armory area.
  2. Fill it out completely: your name, the date, and what the issue is (e.g. broken wire, zipper won’t close, needs rewiring, etc).
  3. If it’s your personal gear, add contact info—email, phone, or parent’s number—so we can follow up if needed.
  4. Attach the tag to the equipment using the pipe cleaner wire on the tag.
  5. Put the item on the armory counter. That’s the repair pile.

That’s it. The more clear you are on the tag, the faster we can get it back to you.

How to Use The Fencing Trainer for Class Sign-Ups and Scheduling

If you’re new to the club—or just haven’t gotten around to using it yet—The Fencing Trainer is the online system we use to manage class sign-ups, track attendance, and keep things organized for both fencers and coaches. You can find it at www.thefencingtrainer.com. Here’s how to get started and a few tips to make the process smooth.

1. Create an Account (One Per Fencer)

Each fencer in your household needs their own account, registered under their own name, not the parent’s. This helps us keep track of attendance, class history, and age-group placement, especially for competition planning.

2. Enter the Birth Year Accurately

The system uses birth year to help group students appropriately. Please double-check this detail—it matters more than you’d think when organizing classes and events.

3. Select the Right Club

When prompted, select Northern Colorado Fencers as your home club. This gives you access to the correct class schedule and registration options.

4. Sign Up for Classes

Once your account is set, you can view the weekly class calendar and sign up for sessions. Be sure to register in advance—classes close 6 hours before start time, and that includes the ability to drop a class if you can’t make it.

5. Need to Cancel? Do It Online

If you know you won’t make it to class, please cancel through the site before that 6-hour cutoff. This helps us manage space and planning. In case of last-minute emergencies, reach out to us directly at ncfboulder@gmail.com.

6. Check Back Often

We sometimes adjust the class schedule based on attendance, tournaments, or holidays. Checking in regularly helps you stay in the loop.

A Few Quick Tips:

  •  Bookmark the site—it’ll save you time.

  •  You don’t need to re-register every month; just keep using your account as long as you’re fencing with us.

  •  If something looks off or you hit a technical snag, let us know. We’d rather fix it than have it linger.

We know it’s one more thing to keep track of, but it really does help things run better for everyone. Thanks for working with us—and as always, if you have questions, just ask.

A Quick Note About Bean

Bean, our small Chihuahua-Dachshund mix, has been around the club since last September. She’s friendly, doesn’t bark much, and has become a part of the background here a couple of days a week.

That said, we know having a dog in a fencing club isn’t what everyone expects—and it’s not everyone’s preference. We want the club to feel welcoming and comfortable for all our members, so we’re continuing to be thoughtful about how Bean is part of the space.

She’s to be kept in a designated area during practice, and while she loves a visit now and then, our priority is keeping the environment focused and distraction-free.

Thanks for your understanding as we balance a few behind-the-scenes realities with keeping the club a great place for everyone who walks through the door.

Club Members & Supporters - We Hear You

Over the past season, we’ve heard from many of you—parents, supporters, and friends of the club—with great ideas, offers to help, and a real commitment to making NCF a better place for our fencers. It’s clear we’ve got a strong, thoughtful community here, and we’d like to bring that energy together.

We’re forming a group of like-minded folks who want to get involved—helping with events, sharing ideas, or pitching in on club projects. This kind of involvement already makes a difference. It’s because of parent and supporter input that we now have updated team gear, a fresh logo, and ongoing improvements to our programs and space.

This group will have room to shape its own goals and direction, and you won’t be going it alone. A few experienced fencing parents are ready to help guide new members, and the coaching staff is involved and available to offer advice and support along the way.

There are real projects ahead—like updating the members’ handbook, finding smart solutions for cooling the club in the summer, and figuring out ways to support travel to away competitions.

If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, text or email Andrea. We’ll get everyone connected and see where it goes.

Thanks, as always, for being such a strong part of the NCF community. text or email Andrea (719) 447-5106, andrea.lagan@gmail.com

Kinderfechten, Youth, Beginners Equipment

It is essential for all fencers to don the appropriate attire during training sessions to ensure both safety and performance. Therefore, we kindly remind everyone that athletic shoes and knickers with socks are mandatory, while shorts, leggings (unless under knickers), and unsuitable footwear are not allowed.

To facilitate this, NCF Boulder offers a selection of knickers and shoes available for your use during training. If you prefer to wear leggings or sweatpants, we welcome you to do so, provided that you wear knickers over the top for compliance. We kindly ask that you refrain from wearing street pants such as jeans, khakis, or slacks, as they do not meet our training standards.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to maintaining a professional training environment!

Included in program membership provides all fencing equipment for both training and competitions.

  • Mask
  • Jacket
  • Plastron
  • Chest Protector
  • Glove
  • Body wire

Some Pretty Big News...

A message from Andrea:

If you’ve been around NCF for any length of time, you probably know that Gary isn’t someone who puts himself in the spotlight. But something came through recently that I think is worth sharing—even if he wouldn’t be the one to bring it up.

Gary has been nominated for the USA Fencing Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Voting happens in May, and only current USA Fencing members can vote. If he’s selected, the induction will take place during Summer Nationals next year.

For those of us who’ve been part of Northern Colorado Fencers for a while, it’s hard to sum up exactly what this means. It’s not just about the length of Gary’s career—it’s about how far his influence has reached, and how many people he’s helped along the way.

He’s coached fencers at every stage—from kids picking up a weapon for the first time to athletes competing at the highest levels of the sport. He’s taught at the U.S. Fencing Coaches College, worked on national training methods, and stayed hands-on at the club day in and day out.

What’s always stood out to me is that even with all the travel, all the international events, all the big stages—he’s never stopped showing up for the work that happens right here. He genuinely cares about the people in front of him, whether they’re chasing national titles or just trying something new.

That’s been true since the very beginning—back when Gary was giving lessons in a park, before moving into an aerobics studio in the early ’80s, and eventually into what’s now our third club location. It’s been a long road, and he’s stayed all-in through every version of it.

Over the years, a lot of his fencers have gone on to NCAA programs—some of them winning national titles. He’s coached Olympians, World Cup finalists, and veteran world champions. And in 1999, the U.S. Olympic Committee named him Fencing Coach of the Year.

He’s also written coaching manuals, mentored other coaches, and led clinics all over the country. I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve met who tell me many variations of, “Gary helped me figure out how to coach.”

And of course, we’ve seen generations of fencers come through NCF—some who’ve gone on to big things, and others who’ve just grown into great people. Some we still see all the time. Others drop by when they’re back in town visiting family. But the one thing we hear over and over is that their time here mattered. That it stuck with them.

That’s what this nomination is about—not just medals and titles, but the long-haul, show-up-every-day kind of impact that coaching really is.

When we got the official nomination notice, I reached out to Lisa Strauss (whose son Luke now fences for Brandeis) and to Melody Hu, who’s helping with the media and communication side of things. They’ve both stepped up behind the scenes to keep this effort moving, and I’m so grateful to them for it.

As for me—I’ve had a front row seat for a long time. I met Gary back in 1992 at USA Fencing Coaches College at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. And now, all these years later—with a lot of stories and journeys between us—it means something to be able to share this with you.

Gary’s not going to make a big deal out of this. But I wanted you to know.

He’s in good company—this year’s ballot is full of people who’ve shaped the sport in their own ways and who are also considered friends. Just being nominated is a huge honor. But of course, we’d love to see him inducted.

If you’d like to help share Gary’s story with the wider fencing world, connect with Lisa (ltstrauss@gmail.com) and Melody .

There’s no way to capture everything he’s done in one message. The list is long—and still growing. But if you’ve got a story or a memory or something you’d like to share, I’d really love to hear it.
