Description
The poster is rectangular in shape with a black colored chalkboard background overlaid with mathematical equations. In the center of the poster, on a diagonal, is a black rectangle bordered by small teal, yellow and red rectangles. It features the 2022 NDEAM theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation,” along with an equation composed of several graphics: a circular photo of a woman in a wheelchair working at a computer with colleagues, followed by a plus sign, followed by a square image of a woman who uses crutches viewing a document with a colleague, followed by an equal sign, followed by a light bulb icon. Across the top of the rectangle in small, white letters are the words National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Along the bottom in small white letters is the hashtag “NDEAM” followed by ODEP’s website address, dol.gov/ODEP. In the lower right corner in white lettering is the DOL seal followed by the words “Office of Disability Employment Policy United States Department of Labor.”
NDEAM IS NEXT MONTH

The 2022 NDEAM theme is “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation”

In recognition of the important role people with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce, the theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) 2022 will be “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation.” Observed annually in October, NDEAM celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. The annual theme is announced early to facilitate advance planning of events. The official 2022 NDEAM poster will be released soon!

When the pandemic began over two years ago, it catapulted many organizations into the future, rapidly accelerating their digital transformation. Work environments changed overnight as remote work became commonplace and market demands evolved.

As organizations transition from the urgent, crisis-driven reaction of recent times to a more stabilized and purposeful roadmap for the foreseeable future, the year ahead holds significant promise for the technology industry with an exciting agenda. Tech players will be seen bringing predictability to the future of work, by serving up innovative technological models, meshing dispersed elements of tech infrastructure and informing and enhancing customer experience while securing the systems and information to drive it. That being said, it will be important for tech leaders to keep a pulse on the industry landscape and evolving trends, to deploy alignment or mitigation strategies and stay ahead.

This Fall Deloitte’s People with Disabilities and Allies (PwD&A) Community will
co-host an event with Disability:IN DC Metro. The event will be focused on corporate strategy for return to office post-COVID and considerations for people with disabilities.

Disability Friendly: How to Move from Clueless to Inclusive

by John D. Kemp, Lakeshore Foundation President/CEO

According to a report from the Return On Disability Group, while 90% of organizations claim to prioritize diversity, only 4% consider disability in their DEI initiatives.

Lakeshore President & CEO John Kemp has written a book addressing this topic. "Disability Friendly: How to Move from Clueless to Inclusive," tackles how employers can harness the untapped potential of disabled employees, make reasonable accommodations, and create cultures of dignity, respect, pride, and inclusion. One billion people worldwide live with some form of disability (around 15 percent of the global population). Estimates suggest that persons with disabilities constitute an emerging market of almost USD two trillion in annual disposable income and a potential market of more than 3.4 billion people when family members and caregivers are included. However, as a group, persons with disabilities have a diverse range of experiences and impairments, yet they often face many complex obstacles in accessing employment, finance, and services, including banking services.

Persons with disabilities are critical to building stronger economies, and there is a business case for their inclusion. Discrimination on the grounds of disability—including failure to ensure equal access to employment and financial services—violates universal human rights, but also harms business performance and economic growth. Failure to address discrimination and exclusion may cost some economies as much as seven percent of GDP.
Given the pressing need for financial inclusion, the banking industry is well-positioned to lead the way on increasing access to employment opportunities and financial services and products for persons with disabilities. IFC is working with banks, companies, and investors to advance the economic inclusion of persons with disability as corporate leaders, employees, entrepreneurs, consumers, and stakeholders.

This note is one of the first by IFC in a series that highlight the private sector business case and emerging practices that foster economic inclusion for marginalized communities. It features first-hand information shared by 12 of IFC’s Treasury underwriter banks on how they are advancing economic inclusion for employees and customers with disabilities.

Leader to Leader 2022
#PurpleLightUp

As employees with disabilities, it’s often our own lack of personal disability confidence combined with having to manage disability ‘alone’ at work that frequently hampers our careers and risks damaging our mental and physical wellbeing.

Lack of inner confidence can cause us to feel hesitant in requesting the adjustments/accommodations that would enhance our productivity; reluctant to share personal information or stories at work; and unable to bring our authentic selves to work.

This is why in 2022 as a part of #PurpleLightUp, PurpleSpace will be inviting disability ERG / Network Leaders to have a ‘Leader To Leader’ conversation with their CEO/C-suite leaders to discuss the role of personal and professional development in supporting inner confidence.
#PurpleLightUp is a game-changing global movement led by PurpleSpace. It is designed to celebrate the economic contribution of employees with disabilities and is a mark of respect to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities every 3rd December.

PurpleSpace now routinely hears form its members how #PurpleLightUp enables disability Employee Resource Groups (ERG) / Networks and their employers to accelerate culture change around the world.
In 2021, PurpleSpace introduced the concept of “Leader to Leader” conversations as part of #PurpleLightUp. Organisations around the world were invited to publish conversations between disability ERGs / Network Leaders and their CEOs about the characteristics of purposeful leadership.
‘Leader to Leader’ provided organisations from across the public, private and NGO sectors with the perfect platform to celebrate the economic contribution of employees with disabilities and shine a light on the work of those who are making the most extraordinary contribution to cultural change: the disability ERG / Network leaders.
Over 50 organisations – including Unilever, Microsoft, Accenture – participated in ‘Leader to Leader’ conversations. This resulted in over 70 videos which had over 186,000 combined views.

Disability IN Procure Access
Jeff Wissel
Jeff Wissel, Disability:IN Chief Accessibility Officer is proud to share the latest work with Disability:IN- the #ProcureAccess initiative is a business-to-business initiative that drives access for individuals with disabilities in business.

A huge thank you to Lainey FeingoldLarry GoldbergLaura Allen, and Sara Basson as the originators of this idea. Thank you to the many individuals and companies that have built and continue to champion this Initiative. Your impact has ripples.

For close to two years now, I’ve had the honor to spend an hour every Thursday meeting with a group of accessibility leaders. As one colleague described, together we created a “safe space,” to share experiences and dream about the future of accessibility in business. It is out of this dreaming, that the Procure Access Initiative was born.

Procure Access is a business-to-business initiative facilitated by Disability:IN that brings together companies that recognize the importance of buying and selling technology that is accessible to people with disabilities. As we launch the Initiative, 20 companies have signed the Procure Access Statement and committed to making accessibility and disability inclusion essential components of today’s procurement processes.

I have been losing my vision over the course of my life. I have been a user of assistive technology- primarily a screen reader- for the last 20 years. I am dependent upon my screen reader to stay gainfully employed, effective, efficient, and competitive. When software programs are accessible, I can fully participate. That shouldn’t be impacted by societal barriers simply because accessibility wasn’t prioritized.

As the Chief Accessibility Officer of Disability:IN, I know that digital accessibility is integral to every aspect of inclusion. The Procure Access Initiative leverages the global corporate buying power to move the needle on accessibility. It creates systemic change with human impact.

Together, we can work collaboratively to drive access and create a global economy where all are empowered to participate meaningfully and fully. #AreYouIN?

Month-to-Month nTIDE Numbers (comparing July 2022 to August 2022)

In the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Jobs Report released today, the employment-to-population ratio for people with disabilities (ages 16-64) increased slightly from 34.4 percent in July to 34.6 percent in August (up 0.6 percent or 0.2 percentage points). For people without disabilities (ages 16-64), the employment-to-population ratio decreased slightly from 75.0 percent in July to 74.6 percent in August (down 0.5 percent or 0.4 percentage points). The employment-to-population ratio, a key indicator, reflects the percentage of people who are working relative to the total population (the number of people working divided by the number of people in the total population multiplied by 100).

“The employment-to-population ratio for people with disabilities has remained steadily above historic highs for the past twelve months,” said John O’Neill, PhD, director of the Center for Employment and Disability Research at Kessler Foundation. “This is encouraging for now,” he added, “considering the growing concerns about recession.”

Findings were similar for August’s labor force participation rate. For people with disabilities (ages 16-64), the labor force participation rate increased slightly from 37.3 percent in July to 37.6 percent in August (up 0.8 percent or 0.3 percentage points). For people without disabilities (ages 16-64), the labor force participation rate decreased slightly from 77.8 percent in July to 77.5 percent in August (down 0.4 percent or 0.3 percentage points). The labor force participation rate is the percentage of the population that is working, not working, and on temporary layoff, or not working and actively looking for work.

"The lack of movement in these labor market indicators may be an early sign of the impact of anti-inflationary measures taken by the U.S. Federal Reserve to slow the economy," remarked Andrew Houtenville, PhD, professor of economics and the research director of the UNH-IOD. "Historically, impacts on the labor market lag behind movements in economic growth such as movement in gross domestic product (GDP). We would not expect to see large changes in employment and labor force participation until after we see declines in economic growth," explained Dr. Houtenville.
