PASTOR'S REFLECTION

Hello St. John’s Family,

What an amazing day! I know the Labor Day holiday weekend traditionally recognizes the end of summer, yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that our Back in the Swing Sunday marked a wonderful new beginning. It was wonderful to gather in worship, being led in powerful and uplifting music by our Choir and Praise Band. Concluding worship around our Lord’s Table, sharing in Communion together was very meaningful. Then moving to Fellowship Hall and sharing in good food and fellowship was an excellent way to conclude the day. It felt so good to see Fellowship Hall full, with conversations and laughter filling the space. After many heavy months marked by distance and loss, it was so good to be together, filled with joy and hope.

Many came together in service to make Back in the Swing Sunday a success – which is another hallmark of the St. John’s family and your commitment to extend the Open Arms and Serving Hands of Christ! It was great to see so many people in action. While I can’t begin to name all who served, please know I and your St. John’s Family appreciate your efforts. A special note of thanks goes out to Kathy Keppol, who did an excellent job of bringing everything together. And… if you weren’t able join in last Sunday, you’ll have many more opportunities this fall and beyond. Yes Day, an opportunity to step forward and make a commitment to serve God in ministry and mission will launch Sunday, September 18th. Opportunities abound! I ask you to prayerfully consider how God desires to work through you, and then say yes as the opportunities are rolled out later this month. I can’t wait to see the good things God accomplishes through your faithfulness and service.

I hope you plan join us in worship this Sunday, as we continue our focus on Esther. In Esther 2, we’ll be introduced to Esther and her uncle Mordecai, as they face a very difficult situation. We’ll see how their responses, in a moment when God seems absent, are grounded in trust and faithfulness... and set the stage for God to work in ways they couldn’t possibly imagine. Check out chapter 2 of Esther prior to Sunday, and then join us in worship. I look forward to worshipping with you Sunday-

           Grace and Peace,

Pastor Brad

JOYFUL VOICES CHOIR

The Joyful Voices Choir is for children in grades K-5.  The Choir meets every Sunday following the 10:30 Worship Service.  Rehearsals usually run about 45 minutes.  The Joyful Voices sing twice a month at the 10:30 service.  Singing Sundays are the FIRST and THIRD Sundays of the month.

The Joyful Voices will resume rehearsals on Sunday, September 11 following the Worship Service.  We hope that parents will encourage their children to participate in the choir.

YOUTH CHOIR (singing)

The Youth Choir is for children / youth in grades 6-12.  The Choir meets every Sunday at 6:15 and the rehearsal lasts one hour.  The Youth Choir sings twice a month at the 10:30 Worship Service.  Singing Sundays are the SECOND and FOURTH Sundays of the month.  Occasionally the choir will sing at the 9:00 Contemporary Worship.  New members are welcome.  Previous participation in a choir is not a requirement.  The Youth Choir will resume rehearsals on Sunday, September 11 at 6:15.

ADULT CHOIR (singing)

Our Adult Choir presents music every week at the 10;30 Worship Service.  The Adult Choir rehearses every Thursday night at 8:00.  Rehearsals usually last until 9:30.  Our first rehearsal will be on Thursday, September 8th.  New members who have had some singing experience are always welcome to join us for rehearsal. The GENesis Bells is a Handbell choir that includes both Youth and Adults.  GENesis Bells rehearse on Sunday nights at 5:15 (before Youth Choir).  The choir plays each month on the SECOND Sunday.  There are several "vacancies" in our choir, due to members graduating.  No previous experience with Handbells is necessary.  Basic music knowledge is a plus for membership, but not required.  Youth grades 6 - 12 are invited to participate.  The first GENesis Bell rehearsal will be September 18 at 5:15.

BIBLE STUDIES & DEVOTIONALS

If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat

In his engaging and humorous style, John Ortberg reflects on the Biblical story in Matthew 14 and applies it to our lives today. He helps us to recognize what boat we're in - the comfortable situation where we are hiding.

Please join us for a six-week study beginning Monday, Sept 19, at 6:30 PM in the Parlor. Cost of participants guide is $10.00.

Sign up sheet in Narthex. Leaders are Barbara Schneider and Carol Campbell.

Thank you to those who have dropped off their used monthly Upper Room magazines. Please be aware we are not able to send them to Red Bird at this time. So do not return them to the church.

CONTRIBUTE A DEVOTION!!

Advent is the season of preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. This should be a time for families to come together in prayer and devotion.

This has been another really difficult year for all of us.

We look forward to a more normal Advent/Christmas season this year.

So, please consider writing a devotion for our Advent Devotional. As always we will have paper copies of the devotional available and, in addition we will be posting each day’s devotion online

If you are interested in contributing a devotion, please contact

Pastor Ruth.

Starting on
September 21st, 2022
7 to 9 PM

Our next study on Wednesday evenings will be Disciple III FastTrack. This is a 24-week comprehensive study with manageable daily scripture readings. The first half focuses on Old Testament prophets; the second half on the Letters of Paul.
This is a wonderful opportunity to study God's Word, strengthen your faith, and form lasting friendships with fellow Disciples.

Please contact the office if you are planning to attend or if you need a book
