Communion Sunday
October 3

This Sunday we will celebrate communion. If you’re joining us online, remember to have your communion elements — some bread and drink that’s common to your home and household — with you when you connect to Sunday’s livestream worship.
Note from Pastor Hardy
Dear Friends,

This upcoming Sunday (October 3) in worship we’ll mark some important things together. First, we’ll receive and dedicate our 2021 Peace and Global Witness Special Offering. We’ll also kick off our 2022 Financial Stewardship campaign using the theme of “Love God, Love Neighbor.” In both cases, we have the chance to think about how the resources we hold as individuals and families might be offered up to a wider community to serve the needs of others around us.

All of this will be happening during a worship service where we’ll also mark World Communion Sunday. World Communion Sunday is an observance that American Christians created in the middle of the 20th century to help remind us that we are united with a diverse family of followers of Jesus who exist all around the world — people who worship and minister along with us, each in very different languages, cultures, and practices.

I like that we’re putting these things together. World Communion Sunday keeps us mindful that our neighbors might be people very different from us, with different needs and sensibilities, but they’re still a part of the body of Christ. Our 2022 Financial Stewardship campaign that calls us to “Love God, Love Neighbor” will start on a day when we think about how we can work with others in our community and around the world to bring practical manifestations of God’s peace to the world.

In this way, we remain aware that God calls us to use the gifts that have been entrusted to us for the good of all, not just our own. And these stewardship efforts taking place on a day where we share sacred bread and cup with a global community — all called to the table by Jesus himself — reminds us that we’re not alone in our efforts, and that we can each do our part with as much faithfulness as we can muster.

Let us bring what we can, with joy, to worship God and to support Jesus’ ministry of peacemaking in our worship — for God, for our community, for the wider congregation of all of God’s people everywhere. I can’t wait to see what gifts will be made manifest through our Sunnyvale Pres family, and what great impact they will have on the world all around us.

Gratefully,
News from Pastor Karin
Dear Friends,

This early fall weather is beautiful, isn’t it? Although ministry continued through the summer as always, new opportunities are popping up in this season of the year. Book studies, Children’s Church, LOGOS, Youth ministries, and so much more! I hope you’re finding places to join in.

Yesterday I had coffee via Zoom with some of our geographically distant folks. It’s an informal time to chat and share our lives. If you live outside our area and want to join us, contact me and I’ll include you on the invite next time — new folks are always welcome!

This Sunday will be full and wonderful. The DipJar, which is the next iteration of the Red Barrels, will be out before and after services to help Sunnyvale Community Services to help feed insecure people in our community. (See below to learn how to contribute online.) We’ll share communion during worship, collect our Peace and Global Witness offering, and kick off our 2022 Financial Stewardship journey, all while we worship together.

I look forward to seeing you either online or onsite!

Peace,
DipJar

Presbyterian Peace & Global Witness Offering • Give

Presbyterian churches across our country will observe the final day of the Season of Peace by receiving the Peace and Global Witness Offering on World Communion Sunday, October 3. The use of this offering will be prayed for at our worship service. The offering received will be shared this way:

  • 25% will be sent to PACT (People Acting in Community Together).
  • 25% will be shared with the Presbytery of San Jose to support the work of the Peace and Justice Work Group and to pay a stipend for the Peacemaking Advocate.
  • 50% will be used by PC(USA) to support the work for peace and reconciliation being done by Presbyterians across the globe.

Although many of us have or will make our donations on the church website, others may prefer to write a check with P&GW on the memo line. Checks can be placed in a Peace & Global Witness Offering envelope found in the pew racks or mailed to Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church, 728 W Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale 94087.

Thank you, Sunnyvale Pres family, for your faithful support of this offering.
