Dear Covenant Friends,
Today is Ash Wednesday—the beginning of the Church’s observance of the Lenten season. At some point throughout this day, many of us will experience the symbolic gesture of receiving the imposition of ashes on our foreheads; an acknowledge our human frailty, our finiteness, and our sinfulness. The words we will most likely hear are, “You are dust and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19)—words intended to confront our grandiosity and put us in touch with the human condition we all share.
The Lenten Calendar we are using this year comes from the Presbyterian Hunger Program with the theme “Tread Lightly for Lent”. It is best accessed online because it has many links within it. I’m going to bookmark it on my computer to use daily. Here is an introduction to the theme:
As people of faith, we seek to “serve and preserve” God’s world. However, some of our collective choices have led to a changing global climate. To turn this tide, we must commit to treading lightly on God’s Earth. Lent is the time to reflect on Christ’s ministry, death and resurrection. We slow down, take time, and examine our internal spiritual lives and the way we live out our Christian faith in the world around us. The Presbyterian Hunger Program accompanies people as they move toward sustainable choices that restore and protect all of God’s children and Creation.
Ash Wednesday services with communion will be held at noon and 7:00 pm on March 5th. A simple supper is available beginning at 5:30 pm in Dowd Commons. All are welcome.
