AVNC Board alerts the City Council
In these hot times, it's more and more important to have cooling centers in the neighborhood to protect those with no other way to beat the heat.
AVNC Addresses Park Issues
Glenhurst Park has some safety and aesthetic issues, and we're asking our Council Member to fix them. Keep letting us know when you see public zones in need of repair!
Community Composting
WHY COMMUNITY COMPOSTING?
Composting at the community scale allows individuals to engage with each other and learn from the process.

The healthy soil that is created by a community compost hub stays in the community and is used locally to enrich the soil in the neighborhood in which it was created.

Switching to Electric Leaf Blowers
Upcoming Workshops

Gas-powered gardening equipment is being phased out in California. We’re here to help gardeners, homeowners and renters make the transition with two free public events in English and Spanish!

First, attend a free zoom workshop on 9/27 to learn about making the transition and the financial incentives available.

And then on 10/4 at Friendship Auditorium, attend a free in-person demonstration of the latest gardening technology!

Ditch the gas powered leaf blowers to improve worker health, neighborhood health, soil health, air quality, and overall quality of life!

Heat Wave & Energy Shortages
In response to the current heat wave and potential related energy shortages, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an emergency proclamation that will allow the use of backup generators and similar backup power sources to reduce the strain on California’s electrical grid during peak times of the energy emergency. The proclamation suspends air quality requirements for power plants and also allows them to increase energy production to assist with current needs, and allows at berth ships to operate auxiliary engines. The proclamation, which remains in effect until midnight on September 7, 2022, can be found here.

Permitted facilities are required to notify the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), as well as the California Air Resources Board and the California Energy Commission, within 48 hours if their operations will result in exceedance of permit requirements. To notify South Coast AQMD of any permit exceedances, please send an email to EmergencyRelief@aqmd.gov.

South Coast AQMD supports efforts to reduce energy use and encourages businesses and individuals alike to do their part, including:

  • Set thermostats to 78° or higher between 3 and 10 p.m.
  • Refrain from using major appliances between 3 and 10 p.m.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and use energy efficient lamps when needed.
  • Keep windows and doors closed to prevent the loss of cooled air.
  • Charge electric cars after 9 p.m.

If you have any other questions about the process or the Governor’s orders, please contact Terrence Mann, Deputy Executive Officer for Compliance & Enforcement at 909-396-3023 or by email tmann@aqmd.gov.
