As much as we wanted to wake up to a truly clean slate when the clock struck midnight, we know the reality is not that simple. We are still faced with a life-threatening pandemic, widened inequities, supply chain distress, a rise in domestic and sexual violence, insurmountable grief, the weaknesses of the "old normal", and the costs of reaching the new one.
If you are exhausted, on autopilot, or feeling your hope wane, know that surviving is enough. You are here. We hope wherever you find yourself today, you honor that space and honor yourself. In the midst of another exhausting year, your hard work ensured survivors received the services they needed. All that we survived, we survived together — and that is worth making a toast to. We come together, symbolically and virtually, to celebrate you and celebrate this work, as difficult as it is necessary. We nod to the unknown, to the wide-open spaces, and the belief in possibilities.
We are beyond grateful for your fierce advocacy, your power, and your strength. We celebrate you and look forward with a sense of renewal and new beginnings. Cheers to 2022, to another year of supporting survivors and supporting you in our goal to end sexual violence.

NAESV Applauds Landmark Bipartisan
Agreement to Address Military Sexual Assault
|
|
The National Alliance to End Sexual Violence welcomed the report of the Department of Defense Internal Review Commission (IRC) on Sexual Assault in the Military along with the visionary leadership of President Biden and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Now, the National Defense Reauthorization Act (NDAA) agreement reached by Congress enshrines some of the major recommendations of the IRC ensuring that sexual assault and other major crimes are prosecuted by attorneys with specialized expertise independent from the chain of command. The agreement also establishes sexual harassment as a specific offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
NAESV President, Monika Johnson Hostler, said:
“Tragically, Vanessa Guillen lost her life because the military failed to take the problem of sexual violence seriously enough. She deserved better, and we believe these policies will mean survivors are more likely to be protected, supported, and receive justice. This is a historic victory.”
We are grateful to congressional leaders including Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA-14) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) for their efforts to advocate for sexual assault survivors in the halls of power.

Ohio Anti-Oppression Committee: 2021 Wrap-Up
|
The Ohio Anti-Oppression Committee (AOC) has been focused on a few specific projects in 2021. Learn more about each below.
Alternative Forms of Justice
This project is still in discovery stages to identify the current needs and scope. It will focus on the varying needs of survivors as they seek 'justice', how transformative justice could impact internal structures at agencies, and what organizations around Ohio can do to provide these options for survivors.
|
Organizational Accountability
In 2021, the AOC continued improving and publishing materials that were
intentionally developed to help hold organizational leadership, staff, and volunteers accountable in their anti-racist policies and programming efforts. The research conducted for these materials resulted in the careful curation of two infographics and two resources designed to assist advocates and their organizations in fulfilling their commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression. These materials are designed to actively address individual and institutional oppression of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, including survivors and employees.
Infographics and supplemental materials can be found here.

|
Anti-Oppression Training
In 2021, the AOC also continued work on its Anti-Oppression Training "Building Diverse, Inclusive and Equitable Workforces & Systems in Ohio: Cultural Humility Training for Ohio Stakeholders". This is an online training curriculum for rape crisis programs, domestic violence organizations, and allied organizations in understanding and cultivating anti-oppression frameworks and practices within their organizations.
This training curriculum was developed by the Anti-Oppression Committee, and includes 8 online modules, with accompanying assessments, workbooks, and completion certificate. Completing the training is one accountability step towards fostering more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplaces among partnering organizations in Ohio.
More information about enrollment in this training will be released soon.

|
Public Policy
The AOC's public policy project has focused on demystifying the Defund the Police movement by providing a historic timeline, highlighting critical scholarship and advocacy, and parsing out the three main approaches promoted by varying movement advocates. This is in an effort to establish foundational tools for discussion and debate between supporters of policing agencies and supporters of the Defund the Police movement.
The AOC hopes to provide resources developed from this project in 2022.
