Provo Predators 12U D2 Spice and 12U D2 Swenson team's combined to make up a team of available players to play in this weekend's WCYH Feast Mode Invitational in Ogden; this combined team instantly played well together, and showed it by going all the way to the Championship and taking it! This was many of the players first time in a tournament, and the experience was definitely one to remember!

Jude Hixson: "This tournament was fun and challenging. The players were fast and had great puck control. It helped boost my game and aggression."

Chase Kovalscik: "I'm having so much fun at this tournament and have loved how competitive our games have been. I hope everyone else enjoyed losing to us."

Dash Harrison, Goalie: "When I am in a game, I feel kind of nervous. But when I start taking shots at warmups, my teammates pass and score during the game. I feel a voice whispering to me saying "You are gonna win, don't feel worried." That moment gives me the confidence to win and block shots."

Challenging Competition at the Thanksgiving Shootout in Arizona

IMG_4143.jpg

Provo Predators 14U Travel A team went to Phoenix to play in the Arizona Thanksgiving Shootout. There were teams from Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah.

Colby Kitchen: "Two things I keep thinking about while we play is 'take it one shift at a time' and 'don't dangle at the blue line'."

Mark Tenney: "Getting the opportunity to play these teams with my very talented, hardworking team was amazing; even though the outcome wasn't what we wanted, we still had fun together and played hard."

Coach Jacob Hickman: "They say hockey is a game of inches, and we have proved that this weekend. We had some tough losses in one-goal games with evenly matched teams that could have gone either way. But it is always fun to travel and play competitive games with new teams."

COACH'S SPOTLIGHT:

JACOB HICKMAN

COACH FOR 12U D1 AND 14U TRAVEL A

I grew up playing street hockey and roller hockey with friends in both New York and Utah. Most days after school, we would round up the Harkers, the Jaramillos, the Kitchens, and others and skate our PVC goals over to a church parking lot to play until dark. My first season of ice hockey as a kid was as a first-year Bantam (14U) when the only rink in Utah Valley was an outdoor rink out by Utah Lake State Park. I have fond memories of playing 6am games, with a layer of fog on the ice, or dressing by the fireplace in the rink lobby, since they didn’t have dressing rooms.

The first year I coached hockey was when I was in college, and my little brother’s Mountain View team needed someone to coach them. It was a definitely a new way of engaging with the game. After college I took a 10-year break from hockey while I finished college and went off to grad school, but as with many of us, we all come back eventually. I have loved coaching my kids as they have picked up the sport, and it gets even more fun as they get older, and the pace and level of competition increases with each age group. From teaching individual skills to helping a team learn to work together as a unit, I have found a lot of fulfillment in seeing kids grow and progress over a season. I like to push the kids hard (some might say too hard!), but we also have a lot of fun along the way. It is exciting to see a group of kids develop together and learn to work together to accomplish new things. The character development we see with players is even more valuable, and I try to pass on the lessons I learned from my coaches as a kid. The game may change over time, but it seems that the life lessons we learn from the game are timeless.

HAPPY 17th ANNIVERSARY TO NICK AND TIFFANY TENNEY

The Tenney's celebrated their anniversary with a trip to the 14U Travel tournament with their kids this weekend; the road trip to Phoenix started with their car breaking down two hours in to the drive. Luckily, extended family saved the day and they were back on the road within 3 hours. We are so thankful for the Tenneys' positive energy at all the games and their willingness to help out whenever needed.
