Greetings,

Welcome back to the Library! As of June 1st, 33 of the libraries are now open Monday through Saturday for you to visit. Come on in and browse, use computers and sit awhile.

Meeting, conference, and study rooms are not yet ready for use, but we are working to make that happen. The Central Library has a planned re-opening in mid-September. Please stay tuned for more updates about Central as we move forward.

You will also be invited to some outdoor programs, especially now that the Summer Reading Program is in full swing until August 1st. The 2021 theme is “Tails and Tales.” Please check out the website for a listing of outdoor and virtual programs.

Additionally, June ushers in the observance of Black Music Month, Gay Pride Month, Juneteenth on June 19th, Father’s Day on June 20th, and the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere happening between June 20th and June 22nd, along with World Music Day on June 21st.  At the library, you can read all about these special dates, and their histories.

During this phase of the Library’s reopening, the Library would like to remind patrons of some important changes:
·      Curbside Services will no longer be available.
·      Meeting, conference and study rooms will remain closed.
·      Self-serve options will remain in place and are recommended for in-branch services like self-checkout machines for paying fines and fees.

VAX UP AT OUR LIBRARIES!!
Juneteenth commemorates the day in June 1865—two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation—when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free.

In Atlanta, we traditionally celebrate Pride in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day. Nationally, Pride is celebrated on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which happened at the end of June in 1969. This means that our stores are full of colorful Pride merchandise twice a year, as national retail chains serve up a double dose of celebration to Atlanta. If you are confused as to how this all came to pass, don't worry! As always, the library is here with online resources to help you learn more.

Read about the Gay Rights Movement from the Encyclopedia of Contemporary United States, Third Edition, or explore Gay and Lesbian Rights with the Encyclopedia of American Law and Criminal Justice. These and other Encyclopedias are at your fingertips inside our American History portal from Infobase. These sources are so up-to-date that mentions of the 2020 Supreme Court decision on Bostock v Clayton County Georgia, which interprets the 1964 Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or identity are included! This landmark decision involved softball games played in Atlanta, providing an important link between local and national history.

Just want to throw a party in honor of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia RiveraGrab a cookbook and download some music - and enjoy living in a city so nice, we celebrate Pride twice.
