FHEL APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
The APTA Academy of Education Fellowship in Higher Education Leadership (formerly the APTA Fellowship in Higher Education Leadership), provides current and aspiring directors in physical therapy education programs with the skills and resources they need to be innovative, influential, and visionary leaders who can function within a rapidly evolving, politico-sociocultural environment.

The award-winning fellowship was first accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) in 2012 and reaccredited in 2017 through 2027. With over 160 alumni, the FHEL looks forward to welcoming its 12th cohort for 2023-2024.

Accepted candidates will begin the fellowship July 5, 2023 and take part in three trimesters of coursework, a mentorship program, and a leadership project.

The APTA Academy of Education looks forward to helping current and aspiring leaders in Fellowship in Higher Education Leadership achieve their professional goals and advancing the physical therapy education community.

Teressa Brown, DPT, serves as the FHEL Program Director.

Please reach out to fellowshiphighered@aptaeducation.org with any additional questions.
THE APTA ACADEMY OF EDUCATION ASSUMES MANAGEMENT OF FHEL
APTA’s Fellowship in Higher Education Leadership, originally the Education Leadership Institute, is transitioning to the APTA Academy of Education.

The fellowship is a year-long blended (online and on-site) curricular learning program that addresses the current and future needs of the physical therapy profession and the profession’s academic community. Acceptance into the program is by application, requires the support of the academic institution, and is intended for novice (up to seven years’ experience) and emerging academic administrators. The fellowship features high-caliber faculty for teaching experiences, experienced academic administrators to provide mentoring, and peer networking to facilitate the development of future mentors and leaders.

The program continues to grow, with the 2022-2023 cohort being the largest to date with 31 fellows. This award-winning program has developed more than 165 fellows since its creation in 2009.

The APTA Academy of Education will operate the program beginning with admissions and enrollment for the 2023-2024 cohort. “This program is a great example of APTA demonstrating leadership through the development of the first ever non-clinical fellowship in physical therapy,” said APTA Senior Vice President of Scientific Affairs Tara Jo Manal, PT, DPT, FAPTA. “Transitioning this program to the APTA Academy of Education will ensure ongoing success and progress.”

This strategic transition also better aligns with best practices for fellowship programs, as it increases the distance between the sponsoring program, the APTA Academy of Education, and the accrediting organization, the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education, which is a program of APTA.

“We are enthusiastic about transferring the prestigious Fellowship in Higher Education Leadership to the APTA Academy of Education,” said APTA Academy of Education President Pamela K. Levangie. “Bringing the fellowship into our fold will support our growing collection of resources that serve our mission to ‘Advance physical therapists and physical therapist assistants as educators.’ We look forward to exploring ways to build on the foundation so capably constructed by APTA to enhance the experience for future fellows. We will also consider how the program's assets can be leveraged to support professional development opportunities for our academic and clinical physical therapy educators.”

Applications for the 2023-2024 cohort will open January 1, 2023 in RF-PTCAS.

PTAE SIG FEBRUARY WEBINAR
The FSBPT Fairness Refresh Process
The first webinar of 2023 will be held on February 9, 2023 from 7:00 PM EST to 8:00 PM EST.

Jenny Lapnawan, Senior Assessment Content Analyst for the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), and other members FSBPT staff, will be our presenters. The National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) helps jurisdictions determine if entry-level PTs and PTAs are competent to practice safely and effectively. To fairly assess candidates, FSBPT takes steps to minimize bias on the exam and that volunteers in the exam development process are trained to eliminate any irrelevant content that may potentially distract, confuse, or offend candidates. The speakers will explain the different approaches FSBPT takes to ensure the NPTE remains a fair and equitable tool that promotes public protection. Additionally, FSBPT develops the Practice Exam and Assessment Tool (PEAT), which is available to all candidates electronically. The speakers will share updates regarding this tool for the upcoming years.

If you’re unable to attend the webinar live, you may access the recording via the APTA Learning Center within approximately two weeks after the broadcast date. You do not need to register for the webinar in order to obtain access to the recording.
VOLUNTEER REQUEST FOR
CSM EXHIBIT BOOTH
For those of you attending CSM, please consider giving us an hour of your time by signing up to be an Academy representative in our CSM Exhibit Hall booth. It's a fun, easy way to provide service to the Academy as you get to know fellow attendees who stop by the booth. You don't have to be an Academy "expert", as we'll provide answers to FAQs from other years. Consider signing up with a colleague or PT/PTA school classmate - it's a great way to find an hour for catching up during the busy CSM schedule. Thanks in advance!
