Woodland Restoration Continues
Our third year of restorative planting in Miantonomi Park's woodlands was a rousing success. Thanks to a fantastic group of more than 50 volunteers, and our partners in the City of Newport's Forestry Division, we were able to add 100 new trees to our restoration area. This brings the total number of new trees planted in this area to 190. Thank you to all who came out to lend a hand!
Pell 2nd Graders Explore Miantonomi
Recently, Pell Elementary 2nd graders visited Miantonomi Park for outdoor classroom programs with Rachel Holbert, Program Director. Students examined rocks and how they weather into a component of the soil that forms the foundation for our urban forest. Along the way, students discovered saplings that have been recently planted as part of NTC's reforestation project. A visit to the memorial tower provided amazing views of the park's forest.
Tree Walks Wrap Up For the Season
Free fall tree walks each month have been a favorite public program. Participants joined Joe Verstandig, Living Collections Manager, for walks at Morton Park, Ballard Park, near the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Island Cemetery, and Queen Anne Square. From foliage and flowers to magnificent and unusual specimen trees, participants have learned about a variety of topics and explored a wide range of landscapes all within Newport's urban forest.

Need an introduction to winter tree ID, or to brush up on existing knowledge?
Many people are able to correctly name trees when in leaf, but few can accurately identify plants from leaf buds and various other twig characteristics.
In this program, we’ll look at some common specimen trees in Newport while in bud. We’ll go over terminology, varying characteristics between species, and tips and tricks to help you identify Newport's trees when they are fully naked.
