2022 - 2023 School Year Calendar

Upcoming Fire and Lockdown Drills

There are two planned upcoming drills we wanted to make parents aware of. On Monday, August 29th, we will be holding our first Fire Drill of the school year. On the following day, Tuesday, August 30th, we will be holding a Lockdown Drill at school, which we recently communicated about.

We do not typically announce Fire Drills in advance to families or students; however, since we are doing these drills on back-to-back days, we wanted to communicate this to families to prevent any confusion regarding our on campus drills this week.

During our August inservice, Faculty and Staff had updated trainings, reviewed our Crisis Management plans, and held a lockdown drill. Next week’s drill will be an opportunity for us to test our crisis management plan and also an opportunity for families to talk to their students regarding these drills in advance. Please click here for some helpful information on how to talk to your children about these drills.

Grade and Teacher Weekly Communications

Each teacher will be sending out weekly communications in a new format by sharing a Google Drive folder with families (which will hold all the emails for the full school year), and then using Google Docs on a weekly basis and sending the link to parents. As many people access our school communications on their mobile devices, to be able to have the best mobile viewing experience please make sure and review this quick one page handout. Additionally, it is recommended to have the Google Drive and Docs apps on your phone will also be helpful for you.

Library: Learning Commons Literacy Corner

New to our Library this year! The Learning Commons Literacy Corner will be updated weekly this year with the following items:

  • Our quote of the week serves to uplift the students’ spirit and cultivate wisdom. These quotes come from children’s literature, famous figures, and Biblical passages.
  • The vocabulary word of the week is pulled from junior fiction texts, such as the Harry Potter series, Lemony Snicket series, Charlotte’s Web, and many more.
  • The high frequency words of the week are chosen in conjunction with the PreK and Kindergarten teachers to provide our youngest students an opportunity to encounter words they are learning in a different context.
  • These items can be found on our school website at our Learning Commons Literacy Corner.

It’s easy to donate - please click here to donate online. If you have an actual gift card, you can place it in an envelope and drop it off at the CLS office across from the clinic (please be sure to put your student’s name on the envelope). Construction Updates

As you have noticed, the Magnolia tree that once stood on the northeast corner of the Church has been removed as part of the renovation process, and some have asked what happened to the tree. During the initial planning phase of the project, it was hoped that we would be able to work around the tree and still achieve our goal of a covered walkway and improved drainage in that area.

As the plans developed, it became increasingly clear that this was not going to be possible, because of the tree’s age, large, low canopy, and extensive root system. A local arborist was brought in to offer guidance on the health of the tree and what could be done. Her opinion was that if the tree were to be moved, a very costly endeavor, it would be anyone’s guess as to whether the tree would survive, a chance as little as 25%. Additionally, removing the number of limbs required to get the canopy high enough to accommodate the covered walkway would be detrimental to the tree. Given all the information and the advanced age of the tree, the committee made the decision to remove the tree.

As part of our agreement with Hedwig Village when the tree was removed, we will be planting two Maple trees on our property to replace the Magnolia tree that was removed. Maple trees were chosen because they are on an approved list given to us by the city of Hedwig Village and will complement the other trees on the grounds of the Church and School.
