Tate Topa Students Shine at Afterschool Day on the Hill

Tate Topa Tribal School’s Drum Group, Young Nation/Teca Oyate Singers, represented their school, community, and the NESC in Bismarck at the ND State Capitol on January 23 for “Afterschool Day on the Hill,” sponsored by the ND Afterschool Network. The drum group is part of the Tate Topa Tribal School 21st Century Community Learning Center program funded through the NESC's 21st CCLC grant with support from the ND Consensus Council. “Afterschool Day on the Hill” features out-of-school time programs from across the state to share the impact of high-quality services and advocate the need for additional program support with state leaders.

Students were greeted by newly elected Governor Kelly Armstrong with a personal tour of his office suite complete with group photos and a history of the governor’s office. ND Lieutenant Governor Michelle Strinden was in the audience for the Drum Group’s performance, along with many members of the ND House and Senate. The students also met ND District 9 State Representative, Collette Brown, who is serving her first term in the ND House of Representatives and is a member of the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation. Other Spirit Lake Nation members in the audience included Dr. Leander “Russ” McDonald, President of United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck; Natasha Gourd, Restorative Practices Council Coordinator for the ND Consensus Council; and Shayla Davis, ND House Minority Administrative Assistant and a former student from Tate Topa Tribal School and recent graduate of Devils Lake High School.

Under the direction of site coordinator Mena de la Paz, the Tate Topa 21st CCLC partnerships were formed with Derrick Jackson and Leora Fox to lead this first-year drum group, learning history and preserving the Dakota culture during the afterschool program throughout the year. Leora Fox made the girls' beautiful ribbon skirts and the boys' ribbon shirts that were worn for their performance at the Capitol. The drum group has also performed at several local athletic events and for other schools in our region. Tate Topa’s 21st CCLC program has over 150 active participants grades K-8. Chaperones for the Bismarck trip included Ms. de la Paz along with Teca Oyate leaders Derrick Jackson and Leora Fox, as well as Tate Topa staff members, Melani Baquiro and Jake Demarce.
