This session is a "watch and discuss" session. Attendees will together watch and discuss "Teaching and Thinking with AI" by Dr. Jose Antonio Bowen. His presentation discusses how AI (artificial intelligence) is changing how faculty work and teach, how students learn and complete work, and how AI is impacting business and industry. Together, we will watch the session and open the floor to attendees to discuss and comment on points made by the presenter. This is an interactive session, so please be prepared to interact with your peers at JSU! Several resources will also be provided to attendees.

Presented by Dr. Benjamin Gross, Associate Professor of Political Science, Sociology and Political Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences

Abstract: The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) raises concerns about students bypassing knowledge and skill development when completing assignments. While Large Language Models (LLMs) train on vast datasets, they do not consume actions taken within a video game. Crafting questions that require students to analyze and reflect on game choices prevents reliance on AI-generated responses to complete the assignment. Additionally, leveraging AI as a tool in producing answers can assist students in understanding concepts, processes, or other parts of these video games. Incorporating video games into courses, therefore, enables instructors to design assignments that verify knowledge and skill acquisition while encouraging purposive AI use.
