UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Implements Behavioral Health Emergency
Service Pod at Southbridge Emergency Department
SOUTHBRIDGE, MA, September 19, 2022 – UMass Memorial Health – Harrington has opened a new behavioral health emergency service pod in the Emergency Department of Harrington Hospital in Southbridge. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new facility to officially mark the opening.

The new four-bed pod includes a dedicated nursing station, full bathroom and shower. The expansion will provide a more comfortable and calming environment for patients seeking behavioral health care who may experience longer emergency room stays awaiting inpatient psychiatric placement or further evaluation.

The addition of a dedicated behavioral health emergency pod will also allow for better use of existing emergency department rooms, which are primarily configured for medical use, as well as more efficient patient management and care.

“The need for behavioral health care was already growing before the pandemic, and beginning to stretch our resources. But since the pandemic began, that need has exploded,” said Ed Moore, President of UMass Memorial Health – Harrington. “Patients presenting with depression and anxiety have tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. According to the Department of Mental Health, emergency room boardings have increased by 200 to 400 percent in the state of Massachusetts since June of 2020. And those statistics reflect a greater need for behavioral health care among all ages, including children, teens and young adults. As just one example, national data from the CDC shows emergency room visits by teenage girls following suicide attempts rose by 50% in the past two years.”

“It became clear that greater resources were required to meet the full needs of caring for our community. This expansion will help us to do that, and to continue our commitment to providing innovative, high quality and compassionate behavioral healthcare to Southbridge and surrounding communities,” Moore said.

UMass Memorial Health – Harrington provides outstanding health care to patients in more than 25 communities throughout south-central Massachusetts and northeastern Connecticut. We are dedicated to our role as the health and wellness partner of the people in our communities and we are relentless in the pursuit of healing. Our comprehensive array of health care services and locations provides our patients with unparalleled access to care. Harrington Hospital in Southbridge provides medical and surgical inpatient care, 24-hour emergency services, inpatient adult psychiatry, an intensive care unit and comprehensive outpatient services. Harrington Hospital at Webster, Harrington at Charlton, Harrington at 169 and Harrington at Sturbridge offer primary care and specialty physicians, diagnostic imaging and more. Harrington Physician Services is our primary care and multi-specialty physician group, UrgentCare Express at Harrington in Oxford serves as a walk-in medical center for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries, and the Cancer Center at Harrington in Southbridge allows patients to receive advanced, local oncological and hematology care.
Second Chance Responds as Springfield Sees an Increase in Canine Parvovirus Cases
Potentially Fatal Disease Confirmed in 7 Dogs in the State Street Area – More Cases Suspected

SPRINGFIELD, MA (September 26, 2022) — Second Chance Animal Services' mobile veterinary clinic will be in the State Street area today after the state confirmed 7 cases of Canine Parvovirus (CPV) in the last month. Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal infectious disease that affects primarily young or unvaccinated dogs. Infection occurs following exposure to contaminated feces. Second Chance veterinarians will be assessing the situation, providing free vaccinations and will start treatment for any dogs found to be sick.

Second Chance Medical Director Dr. Ashley Raymond said, “Parvovirus can persist in the environment for months to years, and nearly all dogs will become exposed at some point throughout their lives. Some breeds have also been shown to be at an increased risk of infection including Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Labrador Retrievers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and sled dog breeds.”

Second Chance CEO Sheryl Blancato, who is very concerned about the recent uptick, said,  “Second Chance holds community vaccine clinics to help prevent situations like this. We just held a free parvovirus vaccine clinic in Springfield two weekends ago, and another free clinic in Palmer in July. We are now working to set up additional dates and locations to stop the spread of this deadly disease.”

Dr. Raymond wants dog owners to check their pet’s vaccine records to make sure they are protected. “Vaccination for parvovirus is highly effective and is considered a core vaccine for all dogs. Puppies as young as 6 weeks can receive their first vaccine, which should be repeated every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age. Puppies and dogs who have not completed their vaccine series should not be out in the public (going on walks, dog parks, etc.) or around other dogs of unknown vaccine history due to risk of contracting parvovirus.”

Parvovirus symptoms typically begin within 7-14 days following exposure to the virus and most often include significant diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, depression, lethargy, and anorexia. Complications from the virus can also lead to anemia, severe dehydration, blood clotting abnormalities, secondary infections, seizures, and death.

Dr. Raymond said “If your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms, especially if young or unvaccinated, you should call your veterinarian right away. Let them know if you think your dog has been exposed to the virus. Prognosis is variable depending on the severity of symptoms, age, concurrent illnesses, and level of care received. If your dog has been diagnosed it is recommended that other dogs in the household receive a booster vaccination immediately and are kept strictly separated from the infected dog. The home should be disinfected, and all fecal material needs to be thoroughly removed and cleaned.”

Second Chance offers weekly vaccine clinics by pre-registration in all their hospitals including their Springfield location on Mulberry Street. The cost for a canine distemper (parvo) vaccination is $18 and includes a vaccine exam.  The nonprofit is currently working to schedule additional community vaccine clinics as well. For more information, visit www.secondchanceanimals.org/vaccine-clinics/

Second Chance Welcomes Cats Evacuated from Florida Shelter Ahead of Hurricane Ian

NORTH BROOKFIELD, MA (September 27, 2022) — Second Chance Animal Services welcomed 10 cats evacuated from a Florida shelter this morning as Category 3 Hurricane Ian slammed into Cuba and remains on track to strike Florida Wednesday. The cats, ranging in age from 10 weeks up to 4 years, arrived on an ASPCA transport plane at Worcester Regional Airport. They were greeted by Second Chance staff who brought them to their Almost Home facility in North Brookfield where the cats will get a check-up and receive any necessary veterinary care and complete their state-mandated 48-hour quarantine before they begin their search for a new home in Massachusetts.

Second Chance Animal Relocation Director Wendy Hall, who was part of the team that welcomed the cats at the airport, said, “they appear in good health and will get checked over by our veterinary team prior to adoption. I expect these cats will find homes quickly.”
Second Chance founder and CEO Sheryl Blancato says that “as an ASPCA Emergency Placement Response Partner, we have been watching the storm and were expecting the call. We are so happy these cats are safe and sound, and soon they’ll begin new lives here in New England.”

Anyone wishing to donate toward their care can donate at secondchanceanimals.org/donate/ or checks can be mailed to Second Chance Animal Services, PO Box 136, East Brookfield, MA 01515.

Sturbridge Coffee Roasters Opens Third Store Location in Charlton
Southbridge/Dudley/Charlton, Mass. – Sturbridge Coffee Roasters expansion continues with the opening of a third location at 7 Brookfield Road in Charlton in September 2022.
The third location is part of the company’s business plan to bring great coffee where there is none according to current owner Elvis Dyer. Sturbridge Coffee Roasters opened in 2004 in Sturbridge and later relocated to Southbridge. Dyer purchased the business in 2014. With a background in customer service, Dyer says, “people and fresh coffee are my passion.”
When the former coffee shop located at 7 Brookfield Road in Charlton, Milk & Sugar, announced they were closing, Dyer reached out to the owner about purchasing the assets and taking over the space. “Charlton has been a target area for us in the past and everyone – from the town hall, emergency responders, customers and residents – have welcomed us and made us feel part of the town,” said Dyer. Dyer also notes that Milk & Sugar did a great job renovating the space and creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere for people to enjoy. Dyer and his wife Karen have strong ties to the Charlton community as his wife grew up in the town and his in-laws have been residents for 40+ years.
Sturbridge Coffee Roasters specializes in roasted Arabica beans from around the world, single origin coffees, Swiss Water Process Decaf, Signature Blends as well as organic/fair trade beans. Flavored coffee is also available.
“The older the beans, the more bitter the coffee. Some coffee you buy is brewed with beans three to six months or older. Our beans will be roasted and always fresh – as we roast at least weekly in our dedicated FDA certified facility on Eastford Road in Southbridge,” Dyer said. “I want to roast just enough coffee every week so that it is constantly fresh.”
Coffee to go is available in single servings or one-pound bags. In addition, Sturbridge Coffee Roasters offers a variety of beverages including espresso-based drinks, teas, hot chocolate, fruit smoothies, frappes and Italian soda, among others. “Our signature cold brew concentrate is a crowd favorite, served over ice and also available in growlers,” Dyer added. Light breakfast and lunch sandwiches in addition to assorted pastries is also available.
While he is in business to make a profit, Dyer recognizes the importance of being in the community. “The biggest thing I think a lot of businesses miss is that they are in the community and need to do things to help it,” he said. An active member of the Southbridge Business Partnership since it was formed, he currently serves as Vice President. The business has supported area non-profits by donating a percentage of gross revenue, participates in local community events, and runs an annual campaign in October, donating $1 for every pound of coffee sold to the Cancer Center at UMass Memorial-Harrington Hospital.

“For me, one of the best parts of the business is creating the freshest coffee so that customers taste the essence of the beans. Coffee is the second commodity in the world–there is nothing better than fresh roasted coffee and my goal is to educate the masses about it,” Dyer said. “I want to give customers a great experience in everything so when they leave they say, ‘Wow, I’ll be back.’”
All three Sturbridge Coffee Roasters locations are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
About Sturbridge Coffee Roasters
Sturbridge Coffee Roasters is your local, fresh roasted coffee shop. The business opened in 2004 in Sturbridge, Mass., in a small space where beans were roasted, and delicious coffee drinks were served to locals and tourists. We quickly discovered that our customers also wanted a place to relax with their coffee, which led to the relocation 5 miles down the road to our present location in Southbridge, Mass. In August 2014, the business was sold to the current owner and coffee lover, Elvis Dyer. In July 2015, we opened our second location in Dudley, Mass followed by a dedicated roasting facility in Southbridge in 2019. Our third store opened in September 2022. Our bean offerings continue to expand to provide opportunities for coffee lovers to experience new flavor profiles and beans from around the world. Visit SCR online.

Friends of Jacob Edwards Library

The Friends of Jacob Edwards Library are excited to actively seek new members. As with other organizations, the pandemic caused many changes and disruptions. However we are back! The mission of the Friends is to support library programs, provide financial support as needed and be a vital part of the library community. The annual book sale, along with the on-going book carts, near children's room, are organized by the Friends. We provide the coffee service and the museum passes that patrons may borrow.

What does it take to be a friend? Just a love of the library and a wish to contribute time and energy. The Friends meet monthly and sort the book sale contributions as needed. We have organized other fund-raisers in the past, but for now are concentrating on the book sales. The annual sale will be held in May, but the carts are always downstairs and are refreshed as often as we can. Contributions of used books in very good condition are always welcome.

So, join us at our next meeting, Monday, October 24 at 2:00pm in the Mills Room (lower level). We have decided that daytime hours worked better for the group so please note the new time of our monthly meetings. We will elect officers at this meeting. Nominees include Barbara Day, president/treasurer, Louise Majewski, vice president and Kathy VanCamp, secretary. While we generally do a membership drive in January, members can join at any time. Fees are: senior 62+ $5, individual $10, family $20, patron $35 and Lifetime $500. Forms and envelopes are available at main desk. Hope to see you October 24.
Country Bank Recognized By The Boston Business Journal
For Their Charitable Giving

Ware, MA – September 29, 2022 – Country Bank, a full-service financial institution serving Central and Western Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that The Boston Business Journal has once again named Country Bank an honoree in its annual 2022 Corporate Citizenship Awards, recognizing the region's top corporate charitable contributors.

The Business Journal annually publishes this list to highlight companies that promote and prioritize giving back to their communities — a feat that is even more important during times of turmoil and crisis like the one we have experienced.

During this year's celebration held on September 8, 2022, 95 companies have qualified for the distinction by reporting at least
$100,000 in cash contributions to Massachusetts-based charities and social-service nonprofits last year. This year, the honorees include companies from health care, technology, financial and professional services, retail, professional sports, and more.

Country Bank, which ranked 44th, employs 215 staff members within Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester counties. Staff members actively promoted the Bank's mission of giving back to the communities they serve by volunteering to a variety of non-profits.

“The past couple of years has presented companies and communities with many challenges, and the needs have continued to grow. It is with honor that we present our list of the Top Charitable Contributors in Massachusetts – companies who gave $100,000 or more to Mass.-based in charities in 2021. Collectively, they gave $322 million in cash contributions – a true example of the business community coming together to help those in need. We are proud to celebrate these organizations who give both money and time to make Boston a stronger and better place for all,” said Boston Business Journal Market President and Publisher Carolyn Jones.

"We are honored to be recognized by the Boston Business Journal for Country Bank’s philanthropic efforts. As a community bank, it is our mission to help make a difference in the lives of others,” stated Paul Scully, President, and CEO at Country Bank.

Sturbridge Herbfest
Saturday, October 1, 2022, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Sturbridge Town Common, Route 131, Sturbridge, MA.

This Herbfest is a brainchild of three local herbalists: Salli Greene, Jo Anne Grubert, and Chris Haller. There are very few herbal conferences nationally and none in this area. This can make it difficult for herbalists, young and old, male and female, to gain more education in a conference setting. Sturbridge, because it is centrally located, is an ideal location and is expected that the Herbfest will be an annual event.

There will also be local products, handmade items, crafts and more set up on the lawn of the Sturbridge Common.
